all these types of players. and you look at centre midfield, alex scott of bournemouth. and what is exciting is that the depth at centre back. you have jarrad branthwaite and jack hinshelwood at brighton. there is still a problem area in the pathway, something that lee carsley spoke about recently, with the senior squad, and we are seeing a debate about who should play there — there are not many left backs coming through but on the whole there is an exciting pool of talent. after saying it will be tricky for wingers and forwards, we will kick off with morgan rogers. one of the standout players in the premier league this season. this time last year i was watching him play for middlesbrough butjust look at his return for the unai emery*s side this season.
7:50 pm
most touches in opposition box, most possessions won, most chances created. right up there as one of the more creative forces. what did you notice back then, michael? he had a real maturity about him for such a young kid. a lot of people look at him and look at his stature. he is tall, he must be six foot two or taller. over the last 12 to 18 months he has filled out a little bit, but the thing that i think makes him stand out to other players is that he loves contact. he just enjoyed that physical side of it, so when he came down to league 1 and lincoln, he didn't mind getting kicked every now and then. he enjoyed people getting really tight too because he has got a really clever way of being able to roll players. but where on earth does he get into that england squad? because england have got an embarrassment of riches in this position. they have, and it is interesting when people talk
7:51 pm
about, how do you fit them all in to play in the 11? you don't. this is what makes me laugh. you don't, you pick the best team. you pick the best team that you think are playing well at that moment. it is a luxury to have two or three options on the bench, so don't take that away from yourself. don't give yourself a headache by trying to put square pegs in round holes. pick the players who are playing the best in that time. and then have those options off the bench if it isn't quite working. according to his club manager, brighton's jack hinshelwood is one of the first names on the team sheet and a future leader of the team. he received his first under 21 call—up last month but it has been impressive rise for the teenager. still only 19.
7:52 pm
what it his best position? i will let him answer that question! it is a blessing, that really intelligent, prepared to learn, jack hinshelwood has been unbelievable. we have needed him at left back and right back, he has filled in. but what a player to talk about. we talked about in the next world cup squad england will probably be looking for left backs. do you think that is an area he will want to try to target? do you think you will speak to the brighton hierarchy and ask to be put in? he won't say no, i can guarantee that. it helps when you have got someone who is prepared to learn like that, and if he has to play left back he will do it.
7:53 pm
if you put him on the wing, he will do it. whether he will have his best game i don't know, but he started the season really well. the first couple of games a little bit rusty, not his position, but the more he plays the better he is going to get. he is at the right club to progress, particularly if it means being that versatile player. borussia dortmund has got some pedigree when it comes to hoarding the talents of england youngsters, to honing the talents of england youngsters, jude bellingham, jadon sancho. could jamie gittens be the next one? he made his first—team debut in april 2022,
7:54 pm
his champions league bow months later against chelsea as part of the england side that lifted the under 19 cup. just tell us how he is regarded in germany. the parallels between him and jadon sancho are quite obvious. both came from manchester city, jamie gittens is from london too. some people expected that he might take the same path that jadon sancho did because both are wingers, but gittens is even better on one on ones, and that is what excites people the most when it comes to jamie gittens. he is a great dribbler, can take on defenders and can fool them, and can make them look like fools. fans are excited. we're talking about morgan rogers and how difficult it could be to break into that england squad given the riches they have on offer. what is jamie gittens doing differently that might interest the england management? looking back at the most recent euros, of course, there are a couple of great
7:55 pm
technicians in the england national team, but when you think about it, there is saka, but who else can take on defenders and win? jack grealish is back, he might be somone that can do that. but as great as some of the midfielders are, someone who can create special moments and just a breakthrough on sheer individual quality, i think that is something jamie gittens offers that not a lot of other english players offer right now at that level. he is established as a dortmund player after two seasons where he struggled with injuries, now he is fully fit and that is an important point when it comes to his development. moving forward, i think there is a realistic scenario in which he can actually make the england national team and then be a significant part of it. great to have you on the show. thank you very much.
7:56 pm
michael, thank you very much to you as well. that is all we have time for. lots more content on the bbc website. if you have missed any of that previous conversation, you can find it right now on the bbc iplayer. goodbye. hello there. sunday developed into a rather cool and cloudy story pretty much across the country, and there's some rain that's going to push in and some of that turn quite heavy across southwest england. this frontal system, though, is also starting to introduce some milder air, and it's going to push that cooler northerly flow we've seen just recently out of the way. so as we go through the week ahead, a change is coming. yes, it might not suit all of you, but it looks likely that for the rest of this week it's going to be a milder story, and there will be some heavy outbreaks of rain around at times, particularly from midweek onwards. so let's take a look
7:57 pm
at the details, then. here's that frontal system. during the early hours of monday morning, drifting its way steadily eastwards. probably by the early morning rush hour, it will have cleared away and leave a trail of cloud in its wake. northern england, northern ireland and scotland largely fine and dry, some scattered showers moving their way across the northern isles. top temperatures between 10 and 12 degrees here, 13 or 1a elsewhere. but look at this — 17 in the south—west, tapping into that milder air already. we could see some sharp, possibly thundery downpours developing on tuesday as that milder air continues to move through. quite a lot of cloud and murk around potentially on tuesday, but a good deal of dry weather. the showers potentiallyjust staying across the southwest and running up through wales and running up through wales and into the irish sea. here, we'll see highs generally between 12 and 17 degrees once again. but it's wednesday when the winds will strengthen further, still from the south. but we could see a spell of very wet weather. a lot of uncertainty as to where that rain will be
7:58 pm
sitting at the moment. heaviest bursts potentially look likely to be along the west coast and then moving its way steadily northwards with gale force gusts of winds in scotland. but if we continue to see some breaks in the cloud and some drier weather in the southeast, that wind is tapping into some very warm air. we could get highs of 21 degrees, 70 fahrenheit — way above the average for this time of year. little ridge of high pressure keeps things quiet on thursday, before the next area of low pressure threatens to bring yet more gales and another speu more gales and another spell of heavy rain. so if you're lucky enough to have the drier weather on thursday, make the most of it
