stuck injabalia, this area has really been the focus of israel's ground offensive, a new offensive that has been going on this month in the north of the gaza strip, with people now living in these increasingly desperate conditions, with food having run out there. the un says that for a two—week stretch, there was no aid getting into the northern part of the gaza strip at all. we have started to see that changing this week after that very strongly worded letter was sent by top biden administration officials warning israel that there could be consequences for the weapons funding that it receives from the us if aid was not allowed in.— that it receives from the us if aid was not allowed in. thank you for “oininr was not allowed in. thank you for joining us- _ instagram has announced it's taking new measures to stop criminals from tricking people into sharing nude images of themselves — and then blackmailing them to stop them being released. it's after the communications watchdog ofcom warned social media companies they'll face punishments if they don't comply with legal safeguards to ensure children are kept safe. our technology editor

zoe kleinman has this report. sextortion is a form of online blackmail where a victim is persuaded to share an explicit photo of themselves and then told it will be published online or sent to friends and family if they don't pay up- victims of this crime are mostly young men. many describe feeling suicidal. some end up taking their own lives. 91% of victims in uk cases dealt with by the internet watch foundation last year were men, although there has been an increase in reports made by women, too. instagram, a social media platform with over 2 billion users worldwide, is today rolling out new safety features to try to protect its users from this crime. they include preventing potential sextortion scammers, identified by instagram's tech, from looking at people's follower and following lists, stopping screenshots of images in direct messages if the sender has

sent a photo in view once mode, and rolling out a feature which blurs images that instagram detects contain nudity, which will be default for under 18s. over the last decade in england and wales, there have been more than 21,000 recorded offences which have mentioned the word sextortion, and 18,000 of those have happened since the pandemic. concern is so high that the national crime agency issued an alert to schools across the country earlier this year, warning pupils about the dangers of this crime. campaigners have broadly welcomed these new measures from instagram, but argue that big social media firms can and should go further. while this is a small positive step, we can't solve the issue of online abuse with piecemeal measures that deal with different forms of abuse in isolation. so we expect platforms like instagram that are huge and which have the technology available to be able to prevent other forms of image—based abuse, including sexually explicit deepfakes,

including nonconsensual sharing of intimate images, rape threats, and the many, many other forms of harassment and abuse that women and girls are subject to online. ofcom, the watchdog in charge of setting new rules for social media companies over the coming months as the online safety act comes into force, has today brought forward to discussions about harmful content targeted at women and girls. data from an online abuse helpline found that nearly three quarters of all threats to share intimate images, even without blackmail, affected women. what we're aiming for is for young children not to experience what some of today's teenagers, and indeed adults in their early 20s, have experienced over the last 10, 15 years. and i can just assure you that at ofcom we are so intent on making a difference here. we are going to use all the powers we have at our disposal. but experts warn that regulation is struggling to keep up with the pace of tech. i'd like to see safety by design

absolutely embedded in all the practices of the platforms because too often what we see is the new toy, the new mechanism, the new tech is rolled out, then we see where the problems arise, then we are trying to patch up. and tech solutions from social media companies can be a blunt tool that throw up unintended consequences. instagram has been embroiled in a long—running debate about a previous policy on nudity, which meant that pictures of women breastfeeding their babies were also blocked. zoe kleinman, bbc news. changes to the asylum system made since the election could save the government almost a quarter of a billion pounds — according to the refugee council. the organisation says the backlog in cases built up during delays in sending some migrants for processing in rwanda shoul
