any manner as described in recent reports. laura scott, thank you. israel says it's sending an additional brigade of troops into northern gaza, as fighting in the strip continues despite the death of yahya sinwar, the leader of hamas. the man who masterminded the october 7th attacks was killed by israeli troops in an apparently chance encounter in gaza's southern city of rafah. 0ur middle east correspondent, yolande knell, reports. in his final moments, the wounded hamas fighter seated in the ruins wasn't recognised. it was only later that soldiers found they'd killed israel's number—one enemy — yahya sinwar, taking a final swipe at their drone. the hamas leader was the mastermind of the october 7th attacks, israel's deadliest—ever day. and israeli security chiefs saw this as settling a score, but it's clear that the fighting goes on. the prime minister said hamas needed to surrender. while this is not the end of the war in gaza, it's the beginning of the end.

to the people of gaza, i have a simple message — this war can end tomorrow. it can end if hamas lays down its arms and returns our hostages. israelis have been celebrating the killing of the country's most wanted man. but many relatives of the hostages still held in gaza are fearful, too. they want their loved ones home. this is a critical, time—sensitive development as it relates to the hostages. their lives are in great danger now, more than ever. we are calling on the israeli government and the us administration to act swiftly and do whatever is needed to reach a deal with the captors. washington is launching a new push for an agreement after months of failed efforts. the chief obstacle to reaching that ceasefire and bringing an end - to the war has been sinwar, i who has refused to negotiate at all in recent weeks and has said no time and time again. _ that obstacle has -

obviously been removed. and yet, few palestinians see an end in sight to the deadliest—ever war in gaza. translation: netanyahu won't stop. we know that all palestinians are targeted, not only sinwar. every day, there are massacres. and today, hezbollah rockets being intercepted over northern israel were a reminder of how war has already spread in this region. as israel battles hamas, hezbollah and their backer, iran, all are now indicating that the latest high—profile killing only strengthens their resolve. yolande knell, bbc news, jerusalem. and this lunchtime we have had a senior hamas official giving the group's first official response to the killing of yahya sinwar. just a short statement has come from the

hamas political bureau. it is not directly confirmed the death of yahya sinwar but it says to its rail it would be a mistake to believe killing the group's leaders would mean the end of the movement, and the struggle of the palestinian people. we are also hearing the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is having a security meeting this afternoon, a special meeting this afternoon, a special meeting to discuss the implications of yahya sinwar*s death, and israeli media are reporting that will really focus on whether it is possible to do a deal to bring those hostages home. studio: yolande knell, thank you. a baby has died after a boat carrying migrants sank in the channel overnight. the french authorities said 65 people were rescued, but that the child was found unconscious and was "sadly declared dead". joe biden has received germany's highest honour, the order of merit, in what's likely to be his last european trip as us president. while in berlin, he also again urged america's nato allies to keep backing ukraine

1:13 pm
inheritance tax is something we all have a view on. if you look at polling, over the last few years, it is less popular than it is popular. it is also an area where the government has to bear in mind that it is the sort of tax it is quite possible to avoid with good tax planning, so a tricky area. we don't know what the government is planning in detail, wejust know know what the government is planning in detail, we just know they are looking at inheritance tax. what might they be looking at? for example, the chancellor could look at the £3000 anyone can hand and within seven years of their death without paying inheritance tax, perhaps that might come down. or she might look at the tax exemptions on property you can hand over after your death, for example your house to your family or businesses or agricultural lands that get some tax exemption. she could look at the threshold, £325,000, maybe lowering that so you pay earlier, or the
