been invited tojoin. the brics nations as a group account for 45% of the global population. their economic weight is significant, their economies are worth more than 28.5 trillion dollars. this corresponds to 28% of the global economy, which has led its members to claim that brics represents the "global majority". so it is a significant meeting taking place in russia today. with me is is russian editor at bbc monitoring, vitaly shevchenko. you have been looking at russian media today. how are they covering this?— they covering this? they are overjoyed- _ they covering this? they are overjoyed. the _ they covering this? they are overjoyed. the key - they covering this? they are j overjoyed. the key message coming out of russia today is that western dominated world is dead,it that western dominated world is dead, it is failing. vladimir putin is not isolated, he is the leader of this emerging alliance of other countries,

the phrase that russian media had used for years is that vladimir putin is trying to create a multipolar world, which means to say that we don't really need the west, we don't really need the west, we don't need america, we have got friends of our own, powerful friends. there's a lot of expectation in russia about talks with leaders such as the leaders of china and india, and apart from the messaging, which is very important, there are practicalities involving this summit as well. for example, finding a new currency to replace the dollar. that is a huge problem for russia because the united states has enormous influence over how the dollar is used in international trade, and that is how a lot of the sanctions are working. so russia is trying to convince other brics members to come up with a new currency to replace the dollar. and also, who knows what sort of thing vladimir

putin and the other leaders will be talking about behind closed doors, with the ukraine war in mind, with how iranians weapons are being used in that war? clearly, vladimir putin would want to get more out of allies such as iran, so that is an important meeting, symbolically, in terms of messaging, and practically. it is bad news for ukraine. what has been _ is bad news for ukraine. what has been the _ is bad news for ukraine. what has been the reaction - is bad news for ukraine. what has been the reaction in - has been the reaction in ukraine to this meeting? well, the are ukraine to this meeting? well, they are not — ukraine to this meeting? well, they are not happy, _ ukraine to this meeting? well, they are not happy, obviously. | they are not happy, obviously. ukraine once at the west to do more. it is another example of how the western strategy of" containing russia" and helping ukraine defend itself, how it is not reworking, more than 2.5 years into this war. people in ukraine, and i would imagine western areas as well, they will be aware that this is not

for us to have a look at, the morgue was opened up, all of the drawers were opened to show us there was nothing inside. doctors have been opening piles of surgical scrubs, boxes of equipment, very, very keen to show us everything there is to see and to prove that there is nothing here. well, i'm just coming now from the basement on minus two up to minus one. we've been brought around the hospital by doctors. we've also been allowed to move around on our own. doors have been opened for us in every area, cupboards, we've been allowed to see what there is to see. now, the hospital staff are adamant that there is no hidden bunker here containing millions of dollars of cash or gold, as the israelis have claimed. they say this is just

the main government hospital here in beirut. eye witnesses have told us that several multistorey buildings in the vicinity of the hospital were levelled in the air strikes last night, and what was significant about the air strikes is, unlike the other air strikes that targeted other neighbourhoods of beirut last night, where there were warnings given in advance to the residents, very short warnings around 15 minutes, but there were warnings given nonetheless for residents to leave for their safety, this air strike in a different neighbourhood there was no warning given in advance. the first tally is coming out of the number of casualties are around 13 killed including a child, and 57 injured. seven of those are critical. another eyewitness at the scene told us that since that tally has been announced, they have seen a number of bodies being picked out of the rubble down there. the building itself, the hospital, it was not hit in the
