be up to a hundred metres or less. but it will linger through the morning and then by late morning it should mostly lift to those low, grey clouds and eventually sunshine should develop in the afternoon. then to the north of that, it is too breezy for fog to form overnight and a fine afternoon. these are the temperatures 14 in glasgow and edinburgh and i6 temperatures 14 in glasgow and edinburgh and 16 or 17 in the south. just the chance of one or two showers in the afternoon across the south. this is thursday's forecast in a weather front is approaching but still out towards the west and we are in the southerly wind, the mild air still over us and the further you are to the east, the sunnier it will be, and may be hazy skies to the west but look at these temperatures, 17 in london and we could see mid or high teens across parts of scotland. the fine weather is not going to last and by the time we get to friday on the weekend, low pressure is sitting over us so there will be spells of rain on the way that the indication is as we head

into next week we could see the ridge of high pressure building in, so fine weather will develop. a bit of a blip through thursday, through friday, saturday and sunday and there may be on monday the weather improves again. thanks, tomasz. and that's bbc news at six. you can keep up with all the latest developments on bbc website. hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm hugh ferris. the headlines this evening. the commonwealth games has a future for now, but some of its sports do not. glasgow steps in to host a slimmed down event in 2026. gutted for those athletes because it is useful for experience and it gives you one of the greatest experiences to be a part of as well. aston villa and arsenal take promising starts into round three of the champions league, with the emirates playing host to shakhtar donetsk. and england pick three spinners

for the third test against pakistan, with rehan ahmed included in the team for the first time in the series. hello again. with under two years to go, glasgow has officially stepped into the commonwealth games breach. after the australian state of victoria pulled the plug on their plans to host the event in 2026, it is the scottish city that has been awarded the chance to take the commonwealths closer to their ioo—year anniversary. but glasgow's games will look very different. a lack of time and money means that the 19 sports on offer at birmingham 2022 will be reduced to just ten in 2026. the likes of hockey, badminton and triathlon have found out today they'll no longer be a part of the event, as patrick gearey reports.

sport that we play, it's easy to go like this, maybe the goals aren't coming at that moment, but i'm still going to work hard for my team and create goals in different ways. so i'm proud of myself for the level that i've been able to maintain and to kind of get that recognition, it feels really good. my parents sacrificed so much to allow me to play soccer. my mum switched jobs completely to be able to drive me two hours down to denver, two hours back home every day. i think the most important thing for them is that i'm happy and i'm doing what makes me smile and for me it was soccer. when i was growing up, there were very few black players on the us women's national team and it is so important for every young boy and girl to see players who look like them doing what they maybe want to do, itjust goes a long way. ifight get to inspire one person every day, i think all of this is so worth it.

and down the country with plenty of sunshine around. however, through tonight, under clear skies, light winds — thanks to high pressure overhead — it's going to turn chilly, but also some fog patches are likely to develop, particularly so across england and wales, where we could see some very dense ones by around dawn. so, here it is, our high pressure area building from the south. it stays quite breezy, blustery with some cloud and few showers across the north west of scotland, but elsewhere it's dry. clear skies, lighter winds further south. this is where we start to see the mist and fog patches develop, becoming pretty widespread through central and southern areas by the end of the night. it will turn chilly out of town. those values will be lower than these temperatures suggest. so, fog patches could be problematic for transport tomorrow morning, just bear that in mind. it should tend to lift through the morning into low cloud, but there should be plenty of sunshine as we head into the afternoon. a bit more cloud and breeze again for the northwest of scotland.

pretty decent temperatures for the time of year. mid to high teens from around central southern scotland southwards, but a bit fresher than that further north. as we head through wednesday night, it looks like it stays dry thanks to high pressure, but we'll start to see more of a southerly breeze developing, so that should inhibit fog patches from developing. and it won't be quite as cool as what we've had the last few nights. so, our area of high pressure holds on for another day on thursday, but low pressure will be waiting out in the wings, slowly encroaching into the far west of the uk throughout the day. but for much of scotland, england and wales, certainly it's going to be dry with some sunshine around. the sunshine turning hazier out west, with rain pushing into northern ireland. temperatures pretty decent, 17, maybe 18 degrees. mid—teens across scotland and northern ireland. but as we head into friday, low pressure eventually wins out, takes over, and sitting across the country throughout the day on friday. so, a lot more cloud around, showers or longer spells of rain, winds tending to pick up as well, particularly through the irish sea and especially so across the southwest here for south wales, southwest england. but there will be some sunshine in between. it won't be a complete wash—out.
