and off to a winning start, carlos alcaraz has no problems in paris. hello again, welcome to sportsday. barely a day after reports linking ruben amorim with the manchester united job, his club have made the approach public. sporting revealed on tuesday that united are interested in making amorim their next manager and are willing to pay his release clause of 10 million euros. united have been looking for a new boss after sacking erik ten hag on monday. we knew this day would come sooner or later. we were hoping later. certainly not mid—season. sporting are having a fantastic season. amorim has done an amazing job. but this is probably...

well, he's actually said it himself. this is his best sporting side. and so, you know, things were going so well, a lot of sporting fans thinking, dreaming that perhaps they could do something special in the champions league. but, yeah, not to be, unfortunately. so, yeah, like you say, bittersweet. quite a sense of pride here in portugal. and as a sporting fan, that yet another of, you know, the major clubs in the world are going to be managed by a portuguese manager. but, yeah, as from a sporting point of view, it's heartbreaking, really, for this to happen at this point in the season. if it was in summer, it would have been much easier to take. i mean, you can't really overestimate or oversell what he's done at sporting, it's absolutely remarkable. you know, he came to sporting, a club in complete disarray. they hadn't won a championship for 19 years. they'd only won two in the previous a0 years. in his first full season, they won the league. second season came very close.
4:47 am
third season not so good. last season, they won it again. this season, if he stayed, i'm pretty sure they would have won the league again. and that would have been, that would have meant that sporting had won back—to—back league championships for the first time for 70 years. so, you know, in portugal, you talk about the big three — of course, porto, benfica and sporting — but to be honest, before amorim came to sporting, it had really turned into a big two, you know, completely dominated by benfica and porto — sporting miles behind. and amorim came in and he changed all of that. sporting have just been scoring goals galore. incredibly attacking team. they've broken all sorts of records. they've been 51 games now consecutive they've scored. so, yeah, exciting times. if i was a manchester united fan now, i would be very excited. well, sporting played on tuesday night in what may well prove to be amorim's final game in charge, if things do indeed progress

with manchester united. they reached the semi—finals of the portuguese league cup after beating nacional, the madeiran club, 3—1. viktor gyokeres scoring twice to take sporting into the last four of a competition that provided amorim with his first trophy as a manager when he was with braga in 2020. so amorim could be heading to old trafford after erik ten hag's departure. it was one that many thought might come, but some of the dutchman's now former colleagues in the premier league were no less disappointed at his sacking. we are all in this job so we know that it can happen, but if it happens, especially because i know him a little bit and i know how much work he puts into it, and, um, then to get this news for him is, of course, a pity. but we also know, especially us coming from holland, how well he did at ajax and that he won two trophies over here. so we will see him, i think, in the nearfuture, somewhere at a big club again.
4:49 am
but at this moment, it's sad for him and his family. always sad to see one of our colleagues, you know, losing hisjob. i think he's done a really good job. he's won titles there. he has changed a lot of things. he's a phenomenal coach. and, yeah, it's difficult when this happens. unfortunately, the exposure that we have as managers, and we are always there in the line and, um, yeah, especially when you look at the game and how they lost the game, it was incredible. but, 0k, they made that decision. wish him all the best for his new chapter. well, arsenal, liverpool and indeed manchester united will attempt to reach the quarter—finals of the english league cup on wednesday. but two other premier league teams have made the last eight already. both brentford and southampton flirted with a shock against second—tier opposition, but they both managed to win their ties. brentford's victory came via a penalty shootout against sheffield wednesday, while southampton eventually beat stoke after initially squandering a 2—0 lead. napoli have gone seven

points clear at the top of italy's serie a after goals from romelu lukaku and khvicha kvaratskhelia gave them a 2—0 win over milan. it is their fifth straight victory. five—time winners borussia dortmund are out of the german cup after losing 1—0 after extra time to wolfsburg in the second round, to add to their league troubles. jonas wind struck the late winner with just three minutes to go until penalties, giving dortmund a third loss in a week and a fifth straight away defeat, increasing the pressure on new boss nuri sahin. meanwhile, two goals from patrik schick put the holders bayer leverkusen on course for a 3—0 victory over elversberg. the defending champions started quickly, with schick scoring twice in the opening ten minutes. aleix garcia added a third for xabi alonso's side, who won the dfb pokal for the second time last season. the teams vying for a place at the women's european championship next year have been whittled down after the first play—off round was settled on tuesday.

these were some of the more closely contested ties heading into the second legs, but belgium and serbia had big home wins to seal progress. the 14 teams that went through have one more round to navigate before claiming a place in the finals in switzerland. they include northern ireland and wales, who both won their ties after extra time, and scotland's 4—0 victory over hungary sealed a 5—0 aggregate win. we've still got more to come, and we were speaking about that on the bench, and i still feel we've got another level, which is a scary thing, because i think we actually played quite well tonight, moved the ball a lot better than we did, made them run, you know. they had to change their game plan. so we know that we had to come out a bit and there were spaces open up in midfield for us and um, yeah, good result. to the paris masters, where carlos alcaraz has beaten chile's nicolas jarry in straight sets in an hour and a half, to reach the third round of the tournament. the second seed, who was given a bye in the first round, will face france's ugo humbert or american marcos giron in the last 16.

england have named their 16—man squad to tour new zealand next month for a three—match test series. 21—year—old jacob bethell could win his first cap. he's a spin—bowling all—rounder who made his international t20 and one—day debut against australia last month, but his red—ball figures for his county, warwickshire, have hardly caught the eye, which is why his test call—up is something of a surprise. here's our chief cricket writer, stephan shemilt. england have moved on, really, from a lot of players that were involved in the pre—ben stokes, brendon mccullum era. guys like 0llie robinson, jonny bairstow, ben foakes, alex lees, dan lawrence was tried in the summer, and they've all been gradually moved aside in favour of really young players like bashir and smith and atkinson. and why england like these guys is they're unflappable, they're cool under pressure, they want to play with freedom and express
4:53 am
themselves on the pitch. one thing that was really noticeable during that deciding test in pakistan, second afternoon, hot day, saud shakeel making a really crucial century, england just looked flat in the field. in another period, another time, not too long ago, you've had big characters like stuart broad, jonny bairstow, james anderson out there geeing the players on, going up to ben stokes, coming up with a plan, maybe getting into a bit of a battle with the opposition. but these newer, younger players, they're not like that. they don't have that sort of temperament. maybe it will come. maybe it will come with experience. but at the moment, one concern about england putting their faith in these youngsters is — are they going to handle the heat of battle in australia? and let's remember, it's not all about the ashes. there's a big series against india at home next month, but england also want to win every test match they play. they've just lost in pakistan. new zealand havejust won in india, orare winning a series in india.
4:54 am
this is going to be a really tough test as well. steve borthwick has named his england team to face new zealand at twickenham in rugby's autumn nations series on saturday. ben spencer will make his first start for england at scrum—half in place of alex mitchell, who remains out with a neck injury. henry slade is fit enough to start at centre. he'll partner 0llie lawrence, with marcus smith at fly—half. tom curry makes his first england start since the rugby world cup 12 months ago, while slade has played less than an hour of rugby this season since returning from shoulder surgery for his club last weekend. sladey said he wanted to play for his club and he's an experienced player, he's an experienced test player, and that's what he wanted to do. so, ok, i back him. i think he's been in great physical shape. sensed almost as soon as he had the shoulder surgery, and he's told me exactly what he needs to do to plan his return to be back playing for exeter, back playing for england for this autumn nations series. he's been driven, which, again,

is exactly what you want as a coach is players like henry slade. you can see the full details of that team ahead of that big game on saturday — the bbc sport website. you can also head to the app for more on all of the latest sports news and the stories we've had on sportsday today. but that's it from me and the team. thanks forjoining us. bye—bye. hello there. there's not much weather to talk about for the foreseeable future. high pressure will be dominating the scene, bringing a lot of dry conditions to the uk. it will be mild both by day and by night. a few chilly spots where skies clear at night. a little bit of sunshine around, but it will generally be mostly cloudy. so our area of high pressure dominates the scene as we head into the middle part of the week. it's a dry start to the day.
4:56 am
some early mist and fog which could lift into low clouds, so some areas staying grey, particularly central, southern and western areas with the best chance of seeing sunshine again will be across parts of eastern scotland, northeast england, maybe northern ireland, joining in during the afternoon period. temperature—wise, reaching the mid—teens for many. we could make 16 or 17 in the warmest spots, so mild for the time of year. wednesday night promises to be a largely dry one. variable cloud. some clear spells again, some mist and fog developing. winds light for most. single figures, i think, across large parts of england, wales, certainly out of town — where we hold on to the cloud, though, just about double figures. now as we head into thursday, we've still got high pressure across the uk. stronger winds affecting the far north of scotland, the northern isles, with outbreaks of rain here, but that really is about it. elsewhere it's going to be dry. lighter winds further south, but a better chance of seeing some sunshine develop on thursday afternoon for england and wales. maybe a bit more cloud across northern western scotland with outbreaks
4:57 am
of rain here. so as we head into the halloween evening, i think there'll be plenty of dry weather for england and wales for the trick—or—treaters. but more cloud with outbreaks of rain across argyll and the highlands for the geysers there. as we head into friday, the 1st of november, we could just tap into some cold air across the far north of scotland. there'll be a weather front here, outbreaks of rain, strong cold northerly winds and it'll be noticeably chilly, i think, across the northern isles and the north highlands. further south for england and wales, northern ireland again, variable cloud, a little bit of sunshine, mild in the south. we see something a bit colder across northern scotland, but it is short—lived. as we move out of friday into the weekend, high pressure rolls back in from the west and pushes the cold air towards scandinavia and the near continent. we're back into the mild colours, as you can see there, for saturday and sunday. so the outlook then — further dry, settled weather, fairly mild by day and by night. that settled theme continues into the new week. take care.
