million americans are not garbage. cheering this week kamala harris has been comparing her political opponents to the most evil mass murderers in history. and now speaking on a call forher campaign last night, crooked joe biden finally said what he and kamala harris really think of our supporters. he called them garbage. no way. and they actually mean it, even though without question, my supporters are far higher quality than crooked joe and lying kamala. president biden said he was referring to a comedian who sparked outrage when he used the same word to describe puerto rico at a recent donald trump tally. i spoke to the

4:48 pm
this idea of a new generation of leadership and unity, matthew, do you think that works as a message? it absolutely does and you see it really resonating with young people. the enthusiasm on the ground for kamala harris and tim walz is quite extraordinary. we have had completely filled out shifts for canvassing and young people have a new interest in tabelling on campus as well as talking to younger voters and i think that that message that kamala harris is promoting, that we need a new generation of leadership as a country is really working and young people are getting behind them and that is why the enthusiasm is so high, because young people were longing for a new generation of leadership. i have been a generation z candidate before and run for office and i know that desire

exist in the country and i think kamala harris being the way that she is, is providing that new generation of leadership for america. kaden crapp, do you agree with that, kamala harris stealing a march with younger voters? i do agree with the message of unity being a great message and that's really responding well with the generation 2 voters but from what i've heard talking to my peers, not only at the university of wisconsin but across multiple colleges is that many students believe that kamala harris will not bring a unity message if she ever gets elected to office and that's just due to the fact of what the last four years of the biden harris administration is. we've seen many divisive remarks come from this administration calling the other half of the nation, those who align with republicans for that make america great again movement as terrorists, extremists and other derogatory terms to really discredit them and make them seem like they are the violent half of the nation.

just to give you a heads up, this is the bbc live page up and running right now and our voter voices they're giving a sense of public opinion. also letting you know what is coming up. arizona, nevada, the key campaign spots for both candidates in the hours ahead. keep across it there on the live page. this is bbc news. the glenfinnan viaduct, near fort william in scotland, is one of the most spectacular stretches of railway in the uk — winning global fame when it featured in the harry potter films. to help maintain its stunning appearance, the victorian structure is undergoing vital concrete repairs, by workers using ropes instead of scaffolding. our reporter iain maclnnes went to find out more. it's hard to say, maybe,
4:51 pm
which of these is more iconic — the glenfinnan viaduct, with all its history, or harry potter's hogwarts express, both of which bring hundreds of thousands of visitors here each year. but this towering structure is now undergoing a pretty complicated face—lift, with rope access teams repairing concrete across the bridge's 21 arches. the viaduct has stood here for over 123 years, allowing people to make the journey from fort william to mallaig and back. but to see a sense of the scale of this project, you really need to get a wider perspective. it's taken years to get this work even to this stage. laura's been working on the project for more than six years. why was it important not to have to put up huge bits of scaffolding? one of the main benefits is the cost. but also this is a much=loved

structure on this line. the west highland line is is loved by many. it's very well known as the harry potter bridge, as well, as i'm sure you well know. we didn't want to take that away. we have over 600,000 visitors up here every year, year on year, and i think that's increasing this year. for those doing the work, there are many challenges — the weather, working at height while keeping the public safe and perhaps some you'd not think of. we've had a lot of midges, obviously. that was that was hard for the boys up there and with with the nets, you sweat a lot. it is difficult conditions. we've had a lot of tourists, as you can imagine, you know. trying to do a good job and just get everything right. the weather, particularly this summer that we've had. didn't come to fruition quite as we expected. it's been particularly wet and in the highlands of scotland this year. so, yeah, it has been really challenging. but despite how difficult the work has been for all involved, there's a sense of pride. the repairs that we are doing
4:53 pm
today are repairs that we hope will last for a0 years. it's a fantastic opportunity. it's an absolute bucket—list job for me to work on a project of this scale in this area. it's not often you'll be able to put glenfinnan viaduct on your cv, if at all, in your career. it's hoped, weather permitting, that the work will be complete by the end of the year, preserving the structure for many years to come. ian maclnnes, bbc news, in glenfinnan. some people go to town really with decorating their houses and lee whitehead from essex is one of them. our reporter stuart woodward went to see him.

lee's been going all out halloween for 20 years now, but even he admits that this year he's pushed it up more than a few notches. it's just been mad this year. i mean, ok, i know i built a boat, but i didn't think it'd be this bad. there's a lot of people have been stopping. there've been loads of donations already, and it's great. around the back, lots of creepy goings on, which lee and his wife have accumulated over the last two decades. which begs the question, where on earth do they keep it? last year, it was all kept on six pallets on the top shelf, but they're all ribbing me at work because there's no room for the boat. so i don't know what we're going to do with the boat. and they are ribbing me, saying it's bonfire night in a few nights, and they might set it alight, but i'm not sure what we're going to do with the boat yet. last year, lee raised money for southend hospital after they cared for his granddaughter. this year, it's the air ambulance. but what does he get out of it? i suppose i am mad, but ijust enjoy doing it. the wife helps, you know. she enjoys it as well. i used to do it for the kids, but the kids are getting too old now. they've flown the nest

and i thought we might stop. but i've got two grandchildren and maybe a few more coming along, so i've got to keep it going for them. they enjoy it. police investigating the theft of trees worth more than £400,000 of trees worth more than £a00,000 have arrested a 63 man on suspicion of fraud and handling stolen goods. the yacht —— loss from the meals yard was reported last week as opposed man pose took delivery of the highly prized cheddar and after being question the man was released on bail pending further inquiries. now it's time to get the weather with darren. we've certainly had a lot of sunshine across north—eastern parts of england in south—east scotland and that was helped partly by the strong wind blowing in from the atlantic at the top of that area of high pressure and the wind will ease overnight and at the same time we will find the weather front moving down from the north which will bring some rain into scotland but otherwise it might be dry but we had some sunshine also across east anglia down to the west country on these areas

could turn misty and foggy overnight so if you're going to be travelling with the likes of the m4, it could be murky in the m4, it could be murky in the morning and a little bit chilly temperatures at six or 7 degrees and the mist and fog will take all morning to lift and there will be a lot of grey and there will be a lot of grey and low cloud around and we might get some sunshine in the north—east of england ahead of the rain moving across scotland with rain becoming light and patchy as it heads into southern scotland. another mile day, 14 or 15 degrees but it will be colder after rain in northern scotland, but probably only briefly because following that weather front, the colder air will get swept away into scandinavia and high—pressure bills across the uk, whether front skid steer to the north and we are left with a mild air by cloudy conditions again and some mist and fog lifting, quite grey and murky for many parts of the country and we could see sunshine across northern parts of mainland scotland helped by a southerly breeze so temperatures will be higher but again we are looking

at 14 or 15 degrees to start the weekend. for the second half of the weekend, the high pressure could move away from us across europe and that allows us to pick up the east or south easterly breeze, dragging in drierairfrom or south easterly breeze, dragging in drier airfrom the near continent and it will be a chilly start for eastern areas on sunday morning but we should see a bit more sunshine across england and may be in parts of scotland as well some of the western areas could hang onto more in the way our. and after a chilly start temperatures might not be quite as high but we are still looking at around 12 to 14 celsius. and by the time gets a monday even tuesday we will find mist and fog quite widely and that is going to be lifting only very slowly into low cloud so for many places it will feel quite chilly to start next week.
