hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm tanya arnold. real madrid's carlo ancelotti says no football matches should have been played at the weekend, in the wake of the devastating flooding in the valencia region. manchester is watching — united's new manager takes charge of his penultimate sporting game against city. and former racing driver billy monger tells us how the stars aligned for him to break the ironman record for a double amputee

at the world championships. uefa have said there'll be a moment of silence at all their club matches this week, in memory of the valencia flood victims. earlier, real madrid manager carlo ancelotti said football in spain should have been completely suspended following the shocking floods that swept the eastern region of valencia last week, killing at least 215 people. real*s visit to valencia on saturday was one of several la liga and cup games postponed last week. translation: i really don't like talking - about football at all. yes, tomorrow's game is a special game for me and i would love to talk about it a lot, but out of respect for everyone, i don't want to speak too much. everyone football—related has been very clear about it.

nobody wanted to play, and that would have been the right choice, in my opinion. but we don't make the rules, and we need to respect the choices made by those above us. when people are not ok, there's nothing to celebrate. football needs to stop. it does, in my opinion, definitely, because football is one of the least important things in life. but like i said, we're just employees here. we don't make the rules. valencia have requested to postpone their copa del rey match on wednesday, in light of the flooding. they said in a statement, "the club believes that during this difficult time, all focus, support and efforts should be directed toward helping those affected by the storm. football takes a back seat in such circumstances. we would like to express our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the families, friends and loved ones of those who have lost their lives, and those affected by this catastrophe that has left us devastated."

there was a dramatic end to the monday premier league game between fulham and brentford. against the run of play, brentford took the lead midway through the first half, but harry wilson scored twice for fulham in added time, the winner coming in the 97th minute. the result moves fulham up to ninth. the whole round performance from the team was good. i think to go in i—nil down at half—time, i didn't think we deserved that. they scored a great goal. it's a fantastic strike from him. so, yeah, but we said at half—time, if we keep playing the football we are, make sure that end ball, that end product is a little bit better, i think the chances are going to going to come. and they defended really well, but i think the pressure in the end told and we were able to get them two goals. ruben amorim has just two games left in charge of sporting before he takes over at manchester united. the first of those is against manchester city, in the champions league on tuesday. his sporting side come off the back of a 5—1 win in their league. in contrast, manchester city have lost their last two. our chief football reporter,

simon stone, is in lisbon. the last time sporting played manchester city here, nearly three years ago, they were hammered 5—nil in a champions league last—16 match. amorim thinks he's improved as a coach since then, but he warns, so has pep guardiola. besides, he's not entirely sure whether victory or defeat would be better, as he goes into his new job at old trafford. he's concerned a win would draw worrying comparisons with one of the greatest managers of all time. translation: my focus is on i winning the match for sporting. the conclusions are not important for me because they could be incorrect. if we win tomorrow, they will think the new alex ferguson has arrived. that will be very difficult. it could increase expectations.
2:50 am
i don't know what is better when i start my new adventure. in just over five weeks* time, ruben amorim will be preparing to face pep guardiola in his first manchester derby. tomorrow night, here in lisbon, manchester city will provide the opposition for amorim's penultimate game in charge of sporting. amorim knows the eyes of manchester will be on this game with added interest, following his appointment as the new united manager last week. but for now, all he cares about is sporting. city's portuguese star bernardo silva is full of praise for what amorim has achieved at sporting. the pair played together briefly at benfica. i don't wish him very well, as you can imagine, because he's going to be my rival, but he deserves what he got. he deserves to be in one of the best clubs in the world right now, because the work that he did in the last, in the last years has

been unbelievable, yeah. the former manchester united footballer diego forlan is getting ready to make his official debut as a professional tennis player. he'll play in the doubles at a challenger event at the upcoming uruguay open. forlan has been telling us about his decision to switch sports at the age of a5. when i was a kid, well, my father played football, and then he moved to a neighbourhood where we started... well, i was not born at that time, but we were going to a tennis club — carrasco lawn tennis club, here in uruguay, in montevideo. er, when i was born, my father started playing tennis since he finished playing football, around 41 or 42 years old. and, well, tennis, it's a big sport in this club. and then there was football pitches as well, so we started doing both sports. while i was growing up,
2:52 am
i was not competing that much in tennis because, you know, it was on the same days that i had football. so in that manner, i always chose to play football than tennis, but i was training, you know, from monday to friday every day. for me, it's everything is positive, it's good. you know, playing with the professionals, you know, just for one game, you never know, but i know it's difficult. i will be enjoying. it's going to be in my club, with so many people, you know, good weather, i don't know. and having the opportunity, you know, to be... i don't know if i'm the first one but, you know, to be a professional football player, to be a professional tennis playerjust for one game, just for me, is a privilege. the former racing driver billy monger, who lost his legs in an horrific crash, has been telling the bbc that everything came together for him to break the ironman world record for a double amputee.
2:53 am
he was competing at the world championships in hawaii last weekend and completed the course in 14 hours, 23 minutes and 56 seconds, while also raising money for comic relief. i'd say it all went to plan out there. i mean, yeah, completely, my expectations for how the race day was going to go, everything that, you know, could go right went right. the plan that me and my trainers would put in place ofjust, you know, nutrition being a huge factor with, you know, an ironman event like that. just being on the move for 14 and a bit hours, about 11, 11.5 hours into, you know, that whole event, at that stage and, yeah, my bodyjust started to feel really strange and ijust needed to take, you know, a couple of minutesjust to walk, regain a bit of composure. i felt a bit faint, a bit dizzy. and then, you know, the heat was bearing down on me. the main focus in the early stages was just getting the prosthetics in a good place. what did you have to change? yeah, we changed just actually, fundamentally, with my running
2:54 am
the way i ran entirely. so i have my knee on my right leg. on my left leg, i don't have my knee. so i normally, or beforehand, i would run differently, side—to—side. um, and i ended up changing and sort of running with my right leg. even though i had my knee and i could run in a more conventional gait, i sacrificed that and ran the same as what i could do on my left leg, and that seemed to balance me out a bit more, put less stress on my hips and, as a result, kind of stabilised my leg within the socket. and that was probably a big pivotal change for me that luckily, we made at the early stages. i think february of this year was when i got my first socket that was designed for me to operate in that way. ironman were great with supporting the challenge and, you know, making everyone aware that, you know, obviously, i was going for that world record with comic relief*s support and backing, you know, behind me. that was obviously the whole reason for taking on that challenge was, you know, because of the work that i'm doing with comic relief
2:55 am
and the money we're trying to raise. and, yeah, ijust really felt sort of that community, the triathlon ironman community, come around me. um, so it was nice when i was at stages of the event where i was around that community and the support network and had people cheering me on. there was a lot of time where you're out, you know, in the elements by yourself, and you've got the other athletes coming past you. and, you know, iwas getting people saying, "oh, the records yours, bill, keep going." and, you know, that was, you know, nice to have along the way, but equally, it doesn't make things any easierfor you out there. when i crossed the line, i saw the time and saw my friends, my family, my trainers. you can see i'm a little bit staggering around on my legs. i was out on my feet at that point. but, you know, it wasjust a really special moment and, yeah, just a sense of relief, really. what an achievement! a reminder of our top story: there'll be a moment of silence at all uefa club matches this week, in memory of the valencia flood victims. real madrid manager

carlo ancelotti has said football in spain should have been completely suspended following the floods that killed at least 215 people. you can get all the latest on the bbc sport website and app. but from everyone here at the bbc sports centre, goodbye for now. hello there. mother nature's being a little bit stingy with sunshine at the moment, so if you've got it, you have to make the most and look up and enjoy through the beautiful autumn colour. we had just shy of 2.5 hours of sunshine in kent on monday afternoon, but most of us sat under cloudy grey skies. that's how we're going to continue for the rest of this week. a lot of dry, cloudy weather around. fog and drizzle could be an issue but, again, it will be mild for this time of year. this high pressurejust drifting its way steadily eastwards, but it's still blocking weather fronts from making too much of an impression, as they try
2:57 am
to move in from the atlantic. so on the whole, again, we start off quite cloudy. perhaps some patchy mist and fog lifting to low grey cloud in the south—east. if we're going to see the best of any sunshine, potentially, once again, across northern and central areas of scotland. temperatures peaking at around 11 to 14 degrees. a bit more of a breeze by the end of the day developing in the far north—west, and a few scattered showers here. but on the whole for bonfire night, the quiet theme continues. chance of seeing some returning mist and fog across south—east england. so that weather front willjust brush the far north and west of scotland, but as it does so on wednesday, we will see a subtle change in wind direction to more of a southerly. that will mean just a degree or so warmer, and it might start to help break up the cloud just that little bit as well. so some showers across the north and west of scotland, but on the whole, we keep quite a lot of cloud around. we will be chasing breaks from time to time and, as a result, temperatures may well peak at around 16 or 17 degrees, so still above where they should be for the first

week of november. not that much in the way of change, as we move into thursday. again, the cloud will break up to allow for some brief glimpses of sunshine. favoured spots are likely to be the further north and west you are, as we go through the day on thursday. and again, somewhere like western scotland could see highs of 16 degrees. weather fronts trying to push in all the time, being blocked and weakened by this area of high pressure. but there's a potential, as we move towards the weekend, for some showery outbreaks of rain to start to push in from the extreme west. not too significant. we keep some sunshine further south. that's it. take care.
