hello, and welcome to sportsday with me, will perry. coming up on the programme... his days at old trafford could be numbered, but interim boss ruud van nistelrooy leads manchester united to theirfirst european win in over a year. it's lee carsley*s last england squad before thomas tuchel takes over. we'll tell you who the interim manager has called up, and who misses out. and former england rugby union international danny care tells us everyone in the squad was terrified of eddiejones when he was in charge. if you spoke up, you wouldn't be able to play for england any more. so that was the power that he had.

a warm welcome to sportsday, on bbc news. a second—half double from amad diallo saw manchester united beat the greek champions paok 2—0 to kick—start their europa league campaign ahead of the arrival of incoming boss, ruben amorim. their next game in the competition, against norwegian side bodo/glimt in three weeks* time will be amorim's first home game as head coach. conor mcnamara was watching at old trafford. three games into the post—erik ten hag era now at old trafford, and manchester united are hoping that they are a team that's turning a corner, unbeaten in all three matches — and ruud van nistelrooy, who stepped in under tricky circumstances, has certainly steadied the ship. new boss ruben amorim will be looking on from afar — he'll be impressed with amad diallo, who scored two goals to win the game tonight, the second of them was a particularly impressive goal.

not the tallest and build or stature, but he's deceptively strong, amad, holding off two burly defenders to create the space to have his shot from distance. it was a perfect finish on what was a perfect night for him. there's one more game under van nistelrooy for manchester united — they host leicester in the premier league at the weekend, then this will become the ruben amorim show. manchester united fans have got smiles back on their faces — we haven't said that in a while — and these could be exciting times to come in the coming weeks here at old trafford. yeah, good night for manchester united. elsewhere in the europa league, 37—year—old pedro scored an injury—time winner for the table—toppers lazio against porto. ajax thrashed macabi tel aviv 5—0 to go second in the group. ten—man tottenham were beaten 3—2 at galatasary, thanks to a brace from victor oshimen. ange postecoglu's side slip to seventh, with nine points from theirfour games. with the ball, just really

wasteful and gave it away way too many times unnecessarily. and that allows them to sort of get a foothold in the areas that they're good at. they obviously got some good plays in the front third, and we just allowed that to happen way too often. and ultimately, we paid a price for it. in the europa conference league, chelsea smashed competitions debutants fc noah 8—0. joao felix and christopher nkunku both scoring twice at stamford bridge to take them top of the table. there were away wins for olympia, rapid vienna, heinenheim, and sant gallen. england's interim manager lee carsley has handed first call—ups to southampton defender taylor harwood—bellis and newcastle full—back lewis hall for this month's nations league fixtures. england play greece next thursday before facing the republic of ireland three days later. this is carsley*s final england

squad before thomas tuchel takes charge on a full—time basis in january. first of all, he hasn't had any influence on the squad selection. you know, i've spoken to him by text, but it's literally "congratulations". i think he's highly respectful of thejob that we and the staff are doing, so we've been left to it — like we always have. i still say this is a massive privilege to have the trust the fa have shown in myself and the rest of the staff, the three camps we've got — this is the final two games, and we're really looking forward to a tough game in greece and the republic of ireland at home. so, you know, two games we're looking forward to. kylian mbappe meanwhile has not been selected for france in the upcoming international breakfor their games against israel and italy in the nations league. mbappe was left out of the french squad in october as a precaution, having just returned from injury — but he was expected to return for selection this month. the france boss, didier deschamps, says the decision to leave his captain out of the squad is a "one—off".

james anderson says his attempts to play in the ipl next year are as much about his coaching as extending his playing career. with no england commitments any more, the fast bowler with the most test wickets in history has entered the auction for the 2025 edition of the world's biggest t20 league. there's still definitely something in me that thinks i can still play. i've never done the ipl, i've never experienced it — so i think for a number of reasons, ifeel like i got more to give as a player. and i also want to... i've done a little bit of coaching since i finished in the summer, i've been around the england team, doing a bit of sort of mentoring, or whatever you like to call it. so ijust think opening my eyes to something like that and experiencing it sort of might help me grow my knowledge of the game and help further down the line.

he's always been fairly frank about his rugby career, but former england scrum—half danny care hasn't held back when describing his old head coach eddiejones in his new book. care says it wasn't a healthy environment and some players got picked on. care himself was dropped, then frozen out of the squad for four years because he dared to questionjones*s decision. jane dougall spoke to him earlier and began by asking how difficult it was to perform in that environment. it was really tough. however, maybe at that point in time, the england side needed maybe someone like eddie to come and be a bit old—school. he was a proven winner, he openly said he's not here to make friends, but to win rugby match is — and his england record is up there with the very best that have ever done thejob. he made us work incredibly hard, you know, emotionally, physically, it was really tough. and not many lasted the difference with eddie — so many players came

in and out quite quickly. yeah, i chose to challenge him on the way he dropped me back in 2018, which led me to be out of the squad for four years — which was really tough, i managed to find my way back in, took a lot of hard work and determination to do so. but yeah, i wouldn't change it, because i think when i did get back in in 2022, it really made me appreciate everything. i'm proud of myself for sticking with it. do you think he was a bully? i think there were times where eddie used the power that he had against the players and his staff in a way that i would not like to use it — i think i'll put it that way — put it the stress he caused staff players, more so than the players. because as players, at least you got to go out there and perform, and still play for england.
3:53 am
but i think a lot of his staff members really struggled with the environment. i don't think it was a very healthy one for many of them. and yeah, there's a few players that, if you were an easy target, you definitely got picked on, and those players didn't really last very long. the rfu have said no complaints were made by players either to them or via anonymous feedback surveys, or through a confidential whistle—blowing service. they also say they've been in contact with you as well, danny, and you spoke positively about eddie in your book, of course. do you feel they have addressed some of the issues that you brought up? yeah, like i said, i've had a conversation with the rfu, just to check in if i'm ok, if i wanted to make any formal complaints. you know, there's up no formal complaints i'll be making. i knew what it was when i signed up for it, when eddie said that he'll make this incredibly hard and if you didn't want to be here, to leave the room. i didn't leave the room, neither did anyone else. do i agree with all the things that he did?
3:54 am
no — but he was an incredibly powerful man. he had the ability and the power to take away the thing that i love doing the most, which is representing my country. and that's why we all stayed quiet, because there's no point — if you spoke up, you wouldn't be able to play for england any more. so that was the power that he had. formula one's drivers have written to the sport's governing body asking that they be treated like adults, after max verstappen and charles leclerc were both punished by the fia for swearing. the letter from the grand prix drivers* association claims "there is a difference between swearing intended to insult others and more casual swearing, such as you might use to describe an inanimate object such as an f1 car", they say, and also revealed their concerns about a recent interview given by fia president, mohamed ben sulayem, claiming fi stars had a responsibility to stop swearing on the team radio, and that they should not act like rappers — a comment which lewis hamilton

claimed had a "racial element". and defending champion iga swiatek has been knocked out of the wta finals in saudi arabia, after group rival barbora krejcikova beat coco gauff to secure her place in the semis. the polish second seed thrashed russian daria kasatkina 6—1, 6—love in herfinal group match — but was still relying on gauff doing her a favour in riyadh. however, krejcikova, the wimbledon champion, won 7—5, 6—4 to move into the knockout stage at swiatek*s expense. don't forget, you can get all the latest sports news from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website — that's bbc.com/sport. but from me, will perry, and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye for now.

hello there. high pressure continues to dominate. for many, a lot of low, grey cloud around on thursday. but for a favoured few, we had some sunshine north—west wales, north—west england along with the far north of scotland, a beautiful day here. and temperatures responded — a high of 19 celsius. quite unusual to get 19 celsius in scotland, in november — it's only happened twice in the last 20 years. but in staffordshire, it's a disappointing day, where the cloud lingered and the mist lurked — only a high of nine celsius. now, as we move out of thursday into friday, we're still under this influence of high pressure. bit more of a breeze out towards the west, continuing — and that is the reason for breaking up some of the cloud on thursday. so, there is a chance that we could see that happening again during friday. we start off on a relatively mild note, 8—9 celsius in the east, double digits out to the west. again, a cloudy, misty start across central and south—east england. the mist lifting to low cloud.
3:57 am
hopefully, the breeze will break up the cloud, particularly once again in northern scotland. so, there will be some glimpses of sunshine for some, and temperatures again ranging between 12—13 celsius — we might see a 16 if we get the sunshine coming through. then, as we move into saturday, almost a repeat performance once again. a lot of cloud around. by the end of the day we could see some patchy drizzle into northern ireland, perhaps wales and southwest england, as well. scotland could again see the best of any sunny breaks. 11—14 celsius here — we might again get 16 somewhere in the south—west. sunday, remembrance sunday, anotherfront will move in — this time, it could bring some showery outbreaks of rain with it but, as that front moves through, it's a cold front. it's going to introduce cleaner, fresher air following on behind — welcome news for many of us. top temperatures through sunday afternoon, again, between 12—16 celsius.
3:58 am
but as we move into monday and that weather front eases away, we see this area of high pressure building in from the west. so, change in wind direction will certainly bring a change of fortunes for many. there is a greater chance for sunshine on monday. the cloud breaking up, and temperatures staying slightly above where they should be for this time of year.
