7:31 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday this sunday night with me chetan pathak. coming up on the programme... more welsh woes — warren gatland's wales equal the record losing run, as defeat to fiji makes it ten test defeats in a row. frustration too for scotland, who fail to take their chances against south africa, as the world champions prove too strong at murrayfield. 22 years after they last did it, ipswich town win in the premier league again with a day to remember at the tottenham hotspur stadium. also coming up on sportsday before seven... going out with a win — mark cavendish, the most successful sprinter in cycling history, ends his career with victory in singapore. i am quite emotional, actually. i realised in the last five laps it was the last 15 kilometres of my career.
7:32 pm
and the win of his life — england's paul waring stuns a star—studded field to take the abu dhabi championship by two shots. welcome along, thank you forjoining us. more on an eventful day in the premier league — not least for ipswich fans — to come but we start with rugby union. it was england frustrated again last night, today it's the turn of wales who've lost their autumn international to fiji by 2a points to 19. the visitors winning in cardiff for the first time ever. for wales, it's their 10th successive test defeat — their worst run of results since 2003. patrick geary reports.
7:33 pm
cardiff was once wales*s fortress, now they hoped it would be the sanctuary. behind them, 90 feet and a draw. in front of them, fiji. the men in red responded by going quickly around the side, to where blair murray was seven minutes into his debut. they soon added a penalty try, fiji being pinned down, but suddenly it's great their path back into the game. the islanders had never won in wales, but felt they would never have a better chance. they probed until the found weaknesses. wales were stung — evans*s try got them back within two, but they could approach approach no closer. for wales, unwanted history. ten defeats in a row. so wales equal their record losing run of ten matches which happened between
7:34 pm
2002 and 2003. it's now 400 days since warren gatland's side last won a test. the pressure doesn't come... it comes from the media because that is a narrative that you create. and that is ok from where i sit. so, you'd have to take... i honestly believe, and we have said for the last 12 months since the world cup and in terms of the number of players and experience that we have lost since the world cup, we have got to invest in a group of youngsters that we thought we could build with, but i understand that test match rugby is about performing and wining, so... you control the narrative and write what you want. so defeats for wales and england this weekend, and for scotland toom i'm afraid. although there were plenty of positives from their performance against the world champions, south africa, they were left thinking about what could have been following a 32—15 defeat to the springboks at murrayfield. nick parrott was watching.
7:35 pm
it was a balmy day in edinburgh for south africa's visit to murrayfield. scotland's welcome for the world champions was perhaps a bit too warm, with them opening the scoring with less than four minutes on the clock. scotland soon recovered their composure, though. despite being temporarily a man down, finn russell kicked them into the lead. but they were in front for less than ten minutes, as their defence went missing once again. the springboks back in front, and then another popping up to put them in control at the interval. scotland rallied after the break. russell kept kicking them back into contention but they weren't able to turn that pressure into a try, as south africa held firm. pollard kicked them ten points clear, then they put some gloss
7:36 pm
on a hard—fought win that moves them back to the top of the world rankings. before today, you had to go back to april 2002 for the last time ipswich town won a premier league game but the long wait is over — they've beaten tottenham to get their first victory of the season. a day for manager kieran mckenna and his players to remember. after being promoted last season, they've had a tricky start to life back in the top flight. now at the 11th time of asking they've won a game sammie smodics and liam delap with their goals. rodrigo bentancur gave spurs hope but it wasn't enough, 2—i it finished, a result that lifts ipswich out of the relegation zone for now. their most famous fan, ed sheeran, a happy man, according to the manager. yeah, he popped into the dressing room, which is nice. we're wearing, of course, the third kit today and the one that he had a part to design in. so that was nice. and he brought us some good luck. the players are delighted. they know this is a win to cherish out of the context
7:37 pm
of the rest of the season anyway. but they also know, you know, where we want to get to as a football club is winning games in the premier league. and it's been a big, big journey to get to this point. we know this season that's going to be a challenge, but that's where we we want to build the football club to. yeah, it is hugely disappointing. we started the game pretty slow and passive, and gave ourselves a mountain to climb. in the second half, obviously, we had the ascendancy and the chances but didn't do enough to win the game. you mention being passive — it was the same team who started against aston villa last week when you were anything but. what you put that down to? it is down to me. i'm not getting the consistent performance i need to out of the players, and it is something i need to address. nottingham forest have been one of the stories of the premier league season so far, but their impressive run is over after newcastle came from behind to win 3—1 at the city ground. that makes it back—to—back wins for eddie howe*s side, who denied forest a fourth straight top flight
7:38 pm
win for the first time in nearly 30 years. nesta mcgregor reports. nottingham forest are this season's surprise package. a team who have gone from narrowly avoiding relegation to challenging at the top of the table. in newcastle united they were facing a team desperate to improve their own lowly league position. forest, on the front foot, were awarded a free kick in a promising position. the defender with his first goalfor the club. in fact, his first as a professional. clearly, the brazilians have had time to work on that celebration. the second half, it wasn't long before the magpies were level. alexander isak the quickest to react from close range. even the most optimistic forest fans were probably wondering how long a good one would last. how long their good run would last. minutes later, we had the answer. newcastle in front for the first time, joelinton with this beauty.
7:39 pm
as full—time approach, the away side played the game safe. harvey barnes had only been on the pitch a few minutes. nottingham forest's run of three wins on the bounce comes to an end. they are still at the right end of the table. newcastle also heading in the right direction. newcastle climb to eighth whilst forest drop to fifth with only a point separating them in the table. forest are in great form, and a very difficult team to play against. they don't concede many chances so i think when we went 1—0 down you fear the worst, because they have been rock solid defensively. we had work to do at half to find a way back into the game but credit to the players because the second half is up there with the best performances of the season. i can't say that was a bad performance, that is out of the question. we played against a very good team that was able to control us, and then hurt us in the way
7:40 pm
that we have been doing, so there is a lesson to be learned. we lost a game but we take a lesson from it, and we have to keep organised and keep compact, not allow counterattacks, because that was the key of the game. manchester united ended ruud van nistelrooy*s time in charge in style, with a 3—0 win over leicester city at old trafford. bruno fernandes opened the scoring before an own goal and a third from alejandro garnacho settled the game. united will have ruben amorim in the dugout for their next premier league game, but for now they stay 13th, with leicesterjust three points above the drop zone. i have to say, the whole team were together. they fought, did everything they could, and that's a bit the journey we started four games ago. we tried to... before the four games, you know, we said to each other, let's make the most of it. let's get the maximum out of each other and the most results possible. and i think we did an 0kjob.
7:41 pm
we felt like we were always in the game in terms of... it didn't feel like there was one team that was definitely going to score the next goal, it was pretty even. i think throughout the whole game. but when it got to definitive moments, they have shown more desire to score and stop us scoring than what we have, and in the end that is what has cost us the result and the score line. last but not least in the premier league today — chelsea and arsenal have gone head to head at stamford bridge. the visitors hoping to get back to winning ways but that hasn't happened — the points shared. it's finished 1—1, as craig templeton reports. the bridge between chelsea and arsenal has shortened so far this season, much to divide some but after ten games it is only goal difference that separates them. one of the main reasons for chelsea's surgeon for chelsea's resurgance
7:42 pm
has been palmer. under david raya separated him from the opening goal. but he couldn't get near this one. arsenal thought they had broken the deadlock when kai havertz was alive to a quick free kick. there wasn't much between him and the last defender but enough for him to be offside. gabriel martinelli didn't have the same issue. he timed his run perfectly and provided the finish to match. north london leading in the west. not for long, because when you leave pedro neto with this much space, he does things like that. and it turns up the stamford bridge volume. arsenal had a huge chance to win it at the end but no one so, after ten games, they were close. after 96 minutes, even closer. minimal capital between them.
7:43 pm
frustration for mikel arteta afterwards — but the arsenal manager looking for the positives. i looking for the positives. am very disappointed but proud i am very disappointed but very proud as well with what outs from the team again. they're very difficult to score the first go, and then very disappointed to be reconsidered. kai havertz nowhere near. they have the quality to punish you, but the team react in a way that is fabulous. they decided to win, decided to take initiative. but we didn't manage to score the goal, that is why we are very disappointed. it is the way we want to do things. _ it is the way we want to do things, try to play face—to—face against every team _ face—to—face against every team. we are chelsea, so i think— team. we are chelsea, so i think it _ team. we are chelsea, so i think it is _ team. we are chelsea, so i think it is important also to send — think it is important also to send this— think it is important also to send this kind of message, knowing _ send this kind of message, knowing that there are clubs, working — knowing that there are clubs, working with the same manager
7:44 pm
for nine — working with the same manager for nine years, we are behind them — for nine years, we are behind them for— for nine years, we are behind them for sure, but in terms of going — them for sure, but in terms of going for— them for sure, but in terms of going for the game and trying to win, — going for the game and trying to win, we are chelsea and we have _ to win, we are chelsea and we have to — to win, we are chelsea and we have to do _ to win, we are chelsea and we have to do that. heading into the international break, this is how the table looks... it is tight and congested for most of that table. nottingham forest dropping to fifth, just a point separating them and newcastle and h. —— newcastle and eights. talking of that result, this is the bottom half of the table, and you will see their ipswich town climbing out of the relegation zone. an important win for wolverhampton this weekend. as for manchester united, that victory over leicester, which leaves a list of the three points for the drop zone. manchester united
7:45 pm
just four points behind arsenal and chelsea in the top four, with their new manager set to take charge tomorrow. celtic are back on top of the scottish premiership table tonight, moving above aberdeen on goal difference, after a 2—0 win at kilmarnock. but it was a long, hard battle, as alex fletcher reports. back to the scene of their last league triumph, celtic arrived at rugby park full of confidence, but this wouldn't be easy. kilmarnock creating problems from the off. and that first—half pressure continued to grow. marley watkins inches away from putting the home side in front. they would live to regret that. callum mcgregor*s ball causing confusion at the back. celtic finding a way to lead at the break. refusing to feel sorry for themselves, kilmarnock continued to probe, and found the perfect opening.
7:46 pm
but matty kennedy could only find the gloves of kasper schmeichel. derek mcinnis finding it hard to watch. celtic now look for breathing space, and in kuhn have a man in red—hot form. a fourth goal in his last three matches. celtic back on top of the league. meanwhile, rangers have now won all six of their home league games so far this season, after beating hearts 1—0 at ibrox. cyreel dessers* tenth goal of the season enough to seal victory for phillipe clement's side, who are nine points off celtic and aberdeen at the top of the table. chelsea have closed the gap on women's super league leaders manchester city, after beating liverpool 3—0. mayra ramirez opened the scoring for the visitors, before chelsea quickly doubled their tally as guro reiten took advantage of this error by liverpool keeper rachael laws.
7:47 pm
the victory means chelsea boss sonia bompastor is the first manager to win their opening four away games in the wsl. i am really pleased, really happy with the performance. and again with the result, we have a really good dynamic at the moment. with a great performance as well. i think we started a little bit slower than usual in the game but after... i think if you look at all the picture, we controlled the game and were able to be efficient in the right moments. everton are off the foot of the table after a 1—1 draw with crystal palace, but are still yet to record victory. west ham claimed their first wsl win since february with a 1—0 win over leicester. and manchester united against aston villa remained goalless. the first steel city derby in sheffield in more than five years, ended with victory for sheffield united over sheffield wednesday in the championship. united claimed victory in a fiesty match at bramall lane

kilometre run just three weeks after coming out of a coma, and four days after being discharged from hospital. i only really remember weighing in and then warming up and after that, nothing. even now, i'm still having to process it. i'm still getting my head around it. 0n the 5th of october, myles took part in his second competitive fight in london, but he received a blow to his head and suffered a cardiac arrest. he was rushed to hospital where surgeons carried out emergency operation to remove a bleed on his brain. he spent ten days in an induced coma. my mind was spinning. i mean, i was going from, is he going to die, is this it? the neurosurgeon said we have taken a big piece of his brain, we have removed the pressure on his brain, the blade. i have physical symptoms.

bridgetown. england 1—0 that a five match series having won yesterday by eight wickets. england have won the toss. they put the windies and to bat. you can keep across it on the website. defeat for scotland and wales in the autumn internationals, and a draw between chelsea and arsenal. in switch which have their first win in 22 years in the premier league, after a 2—1victory against tottenham. —— and ipswich town. that's all from sportsday. hello. sunday has at last brought some sunshine to many parts of northern ireland, western and central of scotland, but for parts of england and wales, we haven't seen any sunshine at all so far this november. that is about to change because monday promises much more sunshine across the board.
7:57 pm
the reason — a weather front sweeping away the low cloud, giving patchy rain and drizzle as it moves through wales, the midlands, into southern england. some showers behind but largely clear skies overnight, so it will be a colder night. not too much frost but a frost on the grass first thing on monday morning, possibly low—level fog patches, particularly across scotland and northern ireland, but not exclusively. the cloud dragging aross the far south of england and the channel islands first thing, then this northerly breeze may bring some showers into east anglia as well as a few further north and west. but it is high pressure and clearer air, plenty sunshine and despite a colder start, the sunshine will compensate with temperatures getting just a little above average. as we then go through the evening and overnight, high pressure takes its place across our shores once again.
7:58 pm
the fronts rather weak as they move southwards and we may see a little bit of showery rain in the far southeast of england into tuesday. a bit more cloud as well because we pick up a northeasterly breeze. that said, for most, despite a chillier start, more grass frost around, it will be pleasant in the sunshine, and there will be a good deal of that. we gradually introduce more cloud again on wednesday, this time in the north with showery rain in the south. 0ur window of sunshine is diminishing a little as we move through the week with these weak fronts around and early morning frost and patchy fog as well. temperatures starting to dip away away a little and that is because it looks set by the end of the week to get colder. cold air is seeping across most parts of the country but with it, low pressure, so turning wetter and windier and the potential therefore is for some snow over the hills. it is getting colder through to the weekend
7:59 pm
