responsibility for the long and retraumatising period between 2013 and 2024." it's incumbent upon senior leaders in any organisation, not just the church, to set the tone and model the good behaviour for others in their organisation to follow. and this is, of course, critically true in relation to safeguarding. this may not be the end of the affair for the church of england. the makin review highlights four current serving bi5hop5 who also knew about smyth's behaviour — something many in the church say now needs to be addressed. where there have been failures in safeguarding practice, those should be investigated. appropriate and proportionate action should be taken with anyone who has failed in safeguarding term5. justin welby may have gone, but accusations of a cover—up remain. whoever is chosen as the next
