hello and welcome to the bbc news at six. four teenagers and a man in his 40s have been convicted of murdering two best friends in a case of mistaken identity. 15—year—old mason rist and 16—year—old max dixon were attacked with knives and machetes in bristol injanuary, just yards from mason's front door. the jury was told that the friends had been wrongly identified as having thrown bricks at a house earlier that day. our correspondent phil mackie was in court. just the typical teenager messing around. he just the typical teenager messing around. . , . . just the typical teenager messing around. . ., . ., around. he was a great character. he was always — around. he was a great character. he was always full _ around. he was a great character. he was always full of _ around. he was a great character. he was always full of laughs. _ around. he was a great character. he was always full of laughs. six - around. he was a great character. he was always full of laughs. six and - was always full of laughs. six and was always full of laughs. six and was 16 and _ was always full of laughs. six and was 16 and mason _ was always full of laughs. six and was 16 and mason rist, _ was always full of laughs. six and was 16 and mason rist, his - was always full of laughs. six and l was 16 and mason rist, his friend, was 16 and mason rist, his friend, was 15. ,, ., was 16 and mason rist, his friend, was 15. ,, . ., , _ was 16 and mason rist, his friend, was15. ,, . ., , _ . was 15. quite a happy child, the uift of was 15. quite a happy child, the gift of the _ was 15. quite a happy child, the gift of the gab- _ was 15. quite a happy child, the gift of the gab. the _

everybody. thank you. this is - another shocking case where children have been killed by other children over something trivial and yet again it has destroyed the lives of those who have been left behind. and afterwards we also heard from the crown prosecution service, who said that the boys deaths had been met with horror and shock in bristol. and they also said that it is a case that serves to remind people who maybe carrying knives and machetes and swords that those sorts of incidents will often end in tragedy. and, jane, over the last couple of years we have seen more and more cases like this where younger and younger people are carrying increasingly deadly weapons. and we know that legislation has been introduced to ban their sale but it does sometimes feel that it is too late and the genie is already out of the bottle. phil mackie, thank you. one month after they were banned in england and wales, zombie—style knives and machetes are still available to buy online. bbc news was able to purchase four knives from online retailers with uk websites.
6:05 pm
zombie—style knives are officially defined as a blade more than eight inches long with a sharp point and a plain cutting edge — plus either a serrated edge, more than one hole in the blade, spikes, or more than two sharp points. the home office says it's carrying out a rapid review of the sale of knives online. our west of england correspondent danjohnson reports. a few days after we placed orders, look what arrived in the post. that has got to be illegal. we were sold these online after the law changed. that is sharp as well, that is not a toy. these are banned weapons. there is a serrated edge on that. delivered to the door. we looked at the uk websites of knife retailers. it says we ship within the united kingdom and found these. that looks familiar. even a knife the government used to show what is

there is a budget coming in october, and it's going to be painful. not the best news for the chancellor today as she visited an oxfordshire lab to see if a new form of fusion energy could fuel britain's future growth. it reached 100 million celsius, hotter than the sun or anywhere else in the solar system. the same can't be said right now for the british economy. we create the plasma and then we hold it there with the magnets. of course we want that growth to be stronger and to be felt by families across the united kingdom. we've now had that budget last month. that has drawn a line under the economic chaos and mismanagement of the last few years. do you accept at all that that three—month hiatus of doom and gloom could have affected spirits in the economy and dampened them such that we get barely any growth at all? we've had barely any growth in the uk economy for more than a decade now. 0.7, 0.5% earlier in the year? we bounced back from a recession the previous year. the truth is, our economy has not grown in the way that it should do and in the way that our competitors have. these are the recent uk economic numbers. after the pandemic bounceback in growth, it's been sluggish,

a recession in red last year and then another bounceback which has now petered out, with just 0.1% growth over summer. the uk economy could do with just a little more heat right now. while the plan here is to produce a futuristic energy source, they're already exporting some of the world's most advanced industrial magnets across the world, and it is in the area of trade, both with america and europe, where there are big uncertainties over the economy.
