anthony gordon, conor gallagher, jarrod bowen, just 30 seconds after coming off the bench with his first touch, and taylor harwood—bellis all scoring for england. and that emphatic win meant lee carsley had handed eight players their debuts. and with all the talk of the players that weren't here, the players that were did a fantasticjob. for new manager thomas tuchel, it's great because he's avoided having to go straight into nations league play—offs. they've been promoted back to the nations league group a, and he can go straight into world cup qualifiers. carsley leaves here after a job well done — six games, five wins, 16 goals and, as i say, eight debutants. so he hands over the reins and the scrutiny, of course, everything that comes with the england job, with a squad in rude health, and now thomas tuchel will have 18 months to try and bring the world cup back here to england. no pressure. there's a bit of relief. um, you know, i suppose if we'd have, if we'd have spoke
3:46 am
at the start of the campaign, we probably would have said, well, you're expected to get promotion. um, but it's difficult, you know, no team has rolled overfor us and let usjust carry on. i found it challenging personally. i know the rest of the staff have, so it's good that we've finished the campaign with such a strong performance. so lee carsley*s six—match stint as england's interim head coach ends with that 5—0 victory over republic of ireland, securing promotion to league a. thomas tuchel will start work as the new england head coach from the 1st of january, and carsley finishes with what is an impressive record, his sole one defeat that coming against greece in october when he picked that unconventional side loaded with attacking talent. he hands over the reins, it's safe to say, with the side in a good position. from one boss coming to the end of a successful stint to another under pressure, and that's wales
3:47 am
rugby coach warren gatland, who's going to consider his future, he says, after meeting welsh rugby union bosses in the principality stadium changing room following a record defeat against australia. wales are now on their worst run of results in their 143—year international history. after that record defeat by australia in cardiff, losing 52—20, it's their 11th straight defeat and makes it 407 days since they last won a test match. meanwhile, in rome, italy beat georgia 20—17. whatever the best decision for welsh rugby is now, i'm more than comfortable with that in terms of... look, there's so much negativity around the game in terms of what's been happening on the field and regionally—wise and financial and stuff. and, you know, whatever the best decision for us to make a change to get some positivity into the game, you know, i would support that 100%.
3:48 am
so if that means me, then i'm comfortable with that. well, this is warren gatland's record in his first stint between 2007 and 2019 — 130 matches, he won 72, lost 56. his win percentage was 55.38%. that was a successful period. in contrast, though, following time with the british and irish lions and chiefs, he's presided over a period that's far worse. and you can see since coming back in 2022 for that second stint, of 23 matches, they've won just six and lost 17. the win percentage a little over 26%. no wonder that there are so many questions around his future at wales at the moment. now, next tonight, an emotional rory mcilroy has ended a year full of highs and lows with victory in the season—ending dp world tour championship. he finished two shots clear of denmark's rasmus hojgaard, and also clinched his sixth race to dubai title.
3:49 am
it's the third year in succession that mcilroy has topped the tour season rankings, and his sixth title overall. the northern irishman only needed a top 11 finish to reach the summit of the season rankings, but won the tournament, finishing two shots clear. as i said, the world number threejoins the late seve ballesteros in second place in the all—time list, now with six triumphs. 0nly colin montgomerie is ahead, with eight victories. to be able to put my name alongside seve, i mean... never in my wildest dreams that i think i'd be doing stuff like this. and then to win today for the third time here at the earth course, with all the close calls that i've had recently, you know, thinking back to, you know, especially the us open, the irish 0pen, wentworth, and to finally be able to get one over the line and finish the year on a high. um, you know, i sort of got emotionaljust thinking about everything that's happened this year and, yeah, i couldn't think of a better way to end 202a.
3:50 am
mcilroy says it's been the most emotionally draining season of his career, both professionally and personally. with more, here's our golf correspondent, iain carter. up and down sums it up perfectly, and i think the downs are lower than the highs, if you like. because as he has admitted this week, he should be sitting here with a fifth major title — two shots ahead with five holes to play at pinehurst in the us open and missing short putts, particularly the one on the 16th, that really stung him, and ultimately bryson dechambeau won a major that mcilroy should have won. then, of course, the disappointments in ireland at royal county down in his native northern ireland, and at wentworth as well. having said that, it's a year with four victories. this was a huge win. had he not won, ithink there would have been potential for a pretty sizeable hangover and he admitted as much afterwards.
3:51 am
instead, he can draw a great deal of confidence that his game withstood the pressure, which was intense through the back nine of this championship, and it does give him a springboard into 2025. well, this guy's got a springboard to 2025 as well. jannik sinner has become the first italian to win the atp finals title, after a commanding straight—sets win over american taylor fritz in turin. the world number one capping an eventful year in which he also won the first two grand slam titles of his career, of course, with a 6—4, 6—4, victory over fritz — his 70th win of the year. the 23—year—old, the first player to take the title at the season—ending atp finals without losing a set since ivan lendl back in 1986. great britain have beaten canada to reach the semi—finals of the billiejean king cup. emma raducanu gave them a great start, beating rebecca marino in straight sets, the former us open champion top of your screen here. playing for only the second time in almost two months following a foot injury,
3:52 am
opened the quarter—final tie against marino and took that first set 6—0. second set was tighter, raducanu, though, grinding out the win, winning it 7—5 and giving britain the first point of the tie against the defending champions. in the second set, rebecca really upped her level. i think she started swinging on pretty much every ball, whether that was wide, whether that was fast and serving great. a lot more first serves, which made it very difficult to kind of get into her service game, so i'm very pleased with how i managed to fend off my own break points. and, yeah, then sneak that break at 5—5 and close it out. and so that left katie boulter needing to beat canada's leylah fernandez to confirm britain's place in the semi—finals. the world number 2a made a great start, winning the first set 6—2. fernandez, though, fought harder in the second set — unable to keep up with boulter, though, who took it 6—4. and britain will face
3:53 am
slovakia in the last four, rebecca sramkova securing their place in the semi—finals with a straight sets victory over australia's ajla tomljanovic, 6—1, 6—2. spain'sjorge martin has won his first ever motogp world title after getting enough points in barcelona to dethrone last year's champion francesco bagnaia, who won the race in catalunya. martin, who had to finish no lower than ninth if bagnaia took the chequered flag, started in fourth and avoided any incidents, moving up one place to finish third, and martin's success comes a year after he finished runner—up to bagnaia — the italian, who won 11 races this season, ultimately having to settle for second place in the championship standings. just enough time to recap our top story. england have won promotion to the top tier of the nations league after they concluded their campaign with what was a comprehensive 5—0 win over republic of ireland at wembley.
3:54 am
head over to the bbc sport website. that final t20 international between west indies and england was a washout. england winning that series 3—1. from me and the team, that's all for now. goodbye. hello there. it might be time to break out the winter wardrobe over the next few days. we are heading for a cold spell. as the air comes all the way down from the arctic, it will increase the risk of some snow and ice, and certainly some widespread overnight frost, particularly into the early hours of wednesday morning. the cold air not quite arriving to all, still relatively mild down in the south—west, but a bitterly cold start in sheltered western rural parts of scotland — temperatures way below freezing and perhaps even some freezing fog as well. but generally scotland, northern ireland, northern england and north wales
3:55 am
will keep some sunshine clouding over from the south—west later on in the day, with outbreaks of showery rain here. we mightjust see double digits down across cornwall, but generally 6—9 degrees across england and wales. much colderfurther north — 3 or 4. so the cold air is starting to push its way steadily southwards. but as this weather front moves in and bumps into that cold air, we could see the spell of significant snow — mostly to higher ground, but perhaps some accumulations at lower levels across parts of north wales, into the north midlands, up across the pennines, perhaps into southern scotland, as well as much as five to 10cm of snowfall before that low starts to pull away. and even once it does, it could turn quite icy behind, with a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow across east anglia and south—east england for a time. windy with it as that low pulls away, and then we'll see a brisk northerly wind driving in some showers off north sea coasts. and here, they will be and here, they will be once again quite wintry. once again quite wintry.
3:56 am
west will be best for west will be best for sunshine on tuesday, sunshine on tuesday, but a cold day generally, but a cold day generally, with temperatures below with temperatures below where they should be where they should be for this time of year. for this time of year. and factor in the strength and factor in the strength of the wind, it will be a bit of the wind, it will be a bit of a shock to the system, of a shock to the system, i suspect. i suspect. the cold air sitting right the cold air sitting right across us, the isobars open up, across us, the isobars open up, so as we get into wednesday so as we get into wednesday morning, we could see morning, we could see a widespread hard a widespread hard frost first thing. frost first thing. but there will be some lengthy but there will be some lengthy spells of sunshine as well. spells of sunshine as well. a few more showers running down a few more showers running down the west coast of scotland, the west coast of scotland, down through the irish sea, down through the irish sea, perhaps, on wednesday, perhaps, on wednesday, and those temperatures and those temperatures once again struggling — once again struggling — some areas just a couple some areas just a couple of degrees above freezing. of degrees above freezing. not much change as well as we not much change as well as we move into thursday and friday. move into thursday and friday. some of those showers some of those showers could still be quite wintry. could still be quite wintry.
