3:47 am
she was a difference against the juventus side who pushed arsenal all the way with daphne van domselaar making a vital stop from arianna caruso before hurtig's winner. attention will now turn to slegers and how long she might remain at the helm but it's been a hugely impressive interim stint so far as arsenal's rejuvenation continues. also through with two group games to spare is manchester city women. they beat swedish side hammarby 2—1 in stockholm to keep their perfect record of four wins from four. khadija shaw got both of city's goals to become the club's all—time top scorer in the competition with seven. let's take a look at the other results in the women's champions league on thursday. in arsenal's group, bayern munich and voleringa drew 1—1. barcelona beat austrian side sant polten 4—1. in the men's game, manchester city manager, pep guardiola has signed a new two—year contract extension, which will keep him
3:48 am
at the club until 2027. his contract was due to expire at the end of the season and guardiola admitted he thought he would leave, but that now, he felt he could not go — perhaps because of the four defeats in a row he has suffered. the 53—year—old joined city in 2016 and has won 18 trophies, including six premier league titles and a champions league with the club. last season, city became the first mens team in the history of english football to win four top—flight titles in a row. the chelsea captain reece james has suffered another injury setback as his side prepare to return to premier league action. james missed much of last season with hamstring issues and had surgery, which — it was hoped — would fix the problem. however, he's been unavailable for several games this season and he'll miss saturday's trip to leicester, head coach enzo maresca's former club. its our mistake.
3:49 am
it is maresca's problem. and we don't want to take and assess any risk for this week and so hopefully it's not something long. scotland women's head coach pedro martinez—loza says leading his side to next summer's euros would be the pinnacle of his time in charge. scotland have to beat finland over two legs to get to the tournament in switzerland next year. the first match is at easter road on the 29th of november, with the return fixture three days later in helsinki. martinez—loza believes his side can do it. for me, after three years dedicated to scotland, it will mean the most important moment in my career. notjust from the professional perspective but from the personal, it's a moment where you feel one more and i can wait for that and hopefully, we can arrive together to the objective. australia are into the semi—finals of the davis cup after the doubles pairing
3:50 am
of matthew ebden and jordan thompson won the deciding rubber against the united states. ebden and thompson beat tommy paul and ben shelton in straight sets to put lleyton hewitt*s side into their third consecutive semi—final in the men's team event. that's after the singles had finished one match apiece with thanasi kokkinakis beating shelton and taylor fritz winning in his match against alex de minaur. and australia will face the defending champions italy in their semi—final after the italians came back from a rubber down to beat argentina. world number one jannick sinner was the star of the show, beating sebastian baez in straight sets to level the tie. he then teamed up with matteo berrettini in the deciding doubles to take the overall win and take the team through to the last four. the double gold medallist and double world champion alistair brownlee has announced that he will retire from triathlon
3:51 am
at the age of 36. his illustrious career saw him win many titles, but he may be best remembered for his selfless act when — during a triathlon in mexico — he sacrificed his own chance of coming first to help his exhausted brotherjonny cross the line. let's remind ourselves of how he swam/cycled and ran to the top of the triathlon world. ultimately, itjust feels really right and i know that's kind of a wishy—washy kind of thing to say but it does and i'm really happy with it. and it's a combination of — it's a combination of i have been doing it for a long time. i mean, the so many other things in the sport that i want to be able to do. i want to be able to do all kinds of endurance challenges, i want to stay fit and healthy and be part of sport hopefully into my old age and definitely aware and kind of putting the miles on the clock and wearing things down so i want to retire fit
3:52 am
and healthy and not be forced to retire by injury and illness or whatever. it has got more difficult for me, i can't do anywhere near the training that i used to be able to do so i also found it harder times knowing that i'm not prepared to the leve i'd like to be. and, yes, i'm old and 36, doing it for a long time and just a lot of other things i want to do. during his 18—year career, brownlee also won 22 world series races, and in those early years his greatest rival was five time world championjavier gomez, who took silver at london 2012. he spoke to the bbc about going up against brownlee for major honours. he's been a great athlete, probably the best we've ever seen, at least in my personal opinion, his been the best triathlon, at its peak, he was the best swimmer, best cyclist and best runner.
3:53 am
and that's incredible. i had the privilege to race him for so many years and he was really tough. i mean, he achieved everything he could possibly achieve in the sport. european champion, world champion, olympic champion two times. also, he had some setbacks, he struggled with a few injuries and a few problems on the way like every athlete but you know, his career has been incredible and, yes, i just want to publicly congratulate him to all those years and it's been great to be a little part of it. and be — and race him for some time. he also change the way we used to race, i'm a bit older than him, i've been around for a bit older and when he came out, he was super aggressive, tactically, really good at racing. and that's changed a little bit, the way we race and we knew we had to be really, really strong and really fit to be able to compete with them so, he changed the game.
3:54 am
he is such an impact in the sport that he will be rememberfor ever in the sport of triathlon. katarina johnson—thompson, who won heptathlon silver at the paris olymics this summer, has been talking about balancing the demands of being an elite athlete and her mental struggles with body image. the two time world champion was speaking to bbc radio 5 live. a relationship with my body has been a constant powerless, it's been a source of how people perceive me when i was younger so my image will be based on being too heavy or not being athletic or, been to athletic, the boys would not like me, too muscly, going through this teenage years, it's very difficult to try and when i grew up in the size zero era, i definitely struggled with and i was looking at myself and i wasn't someone i saw on tv or magazines. my body image then changed when i grew up or when i got over that i didn't care of how people looked at me with injury
3:55 am
prevention and trying to protect my body from injury and the constant battle with my body for more than 12 years now. it's important to everyone that around you who believe in you. and believe in you and you don't believe in yourself. formula one returns this weekend — fittingly in a city which knows how to party — las vegas. however, japanese driver yuki tsunoda says he was nearly sent home by immigration officials as he tried to enter the usa. the rb driver says he was held for hours, despite having the correct paperwork and required visas. he's also claimed an immigration official asked for details of his salary, before he was alowed to enter the country. tsunoda says he was wearing pyjamas after a long flight and that "maybe he didn't look like an f1 driver". you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website

— that's bbc.com/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. hello. friday is another cold day coming up with a chance of seeing some further localised disruption. now, over recent hours we've seen very heavy snow showers push into north west england and across the northwest midlands, north wales too. and upstream these very bright clouds, that's the trough bringing extra heavy showers across the irish sea. they're going to be working into cheshire, parts of greater manchester, the north—west midlands, north wales too. some communities could see 5cm of snow. wouldn't be surprised if one or two areas got closer to ten, where those showers tend to merge together to give some longer spells of snow. a cold start to friday, with a risk of icy stretches just about anywhere. you might even see a bit of snow on the ground around
3:57 am
the chilterns, the greater london area, if those showers make it across the midlands. as we go through friday, many of the showers will tend to revert back to rain or sleet, and they'll tend to be draped around coastal areas, leaving many inland parts of the uk dry with plenty of sunshine. but it's another very cold day, temperatures for many are around 4—6 celsius. into the weekend, we've got big problems thanks to this — storm bert. now, this is going to be bringing multiple hazards to the uk. friday night, as this rain bumps into the cold air, we could see a spell of snow, even at low levels, just about anywhere. it will turn back to rain in most cases. however, the met office have already issued an amber weather warning for the high ground of scotland. io—20cm here, some of the higher hills could see double that, up to 40cm. and it's a similar story for the high ground of northern england. transport disruption, power cuts are possible. further west we've got very strong winds, gusts of around 60 or 70 miles an hour around our irish sea coast, and huge amounts of rain build up this weekend,
3:58 am
particularly around the hills and coasts in the west, and especially for wales and south—west england, where some of the high ground could pick up as much as 150mm of rain, bringing a significant risk of some flooding. if this continues to be indicated in our computer models, those yellow warnings could be upgraded to amber weather warnings. there will be a very slow rise in temperatures. eventually it will turn milder across western areas. on sunday, bert still bringing very strong winds with severe gales across the north—west of the uk. heavy rain across southern counties of england. blustery showers elsewhere, but it looks like bert will be bringing milder weather but a significant risk of disruption around this weekend.
