premier league clubs have approved changes to the rules around commercial deals after a meeting where teams voted earlier today. it came after an independent panel found parts of the premier league's rules to be unlawful earlier this year following a lawsuit instigated by manchester city. 16 of the clubs voted in favour to change the associated party transaction regulations, which relate to companies or people who have a significant interest in the relevant club. the premier league resumes this weekend after the international break. it's top against bottom on sunday as liverpool face southampton at st mary's. arne slot*s side have a five—point lead but he knows there's still a lot of football to be played. i would be a bit strange if i would tell you that i'm not enjoying being in the position we are in now,
11:46 am
but we also understand that it's only 11 games. 11 games now? yeah, so that's a lot of games have to be played. and we all know that that the teams we face in this league, they are able to have the same run of games as we have. so if we want to stay where we are, we have to keep bringing the results in, which is not going to be easy, starting on sunday. while max verstappen could clinch the title this weekend, he didn't fare too well in the first day of practice at the las vegas grand prix. he ended up down in 17th, with lewis hamilton setting the fastest time. lando norris, whose title challenge has fallen away somewhat, was second fastest. red bull's verstappen, who can clinch his fourth drivers* title this weekend, ended up two seconds off the pace — but the dutchman will win the title — as long as he doesn't lose more than two points to norris in the race this weekend. we struggled a lot with making the tyres work over one lap. especially long run i think started off a bit more, more competitive, but even there, i think we need to fine tune a few things.
11:47 am
but yeah, the one lap pace is quite far off. of course, it's quite unique conditions around here it's very cold, but at the end of the day it's the same for everyone. so you need to try and understand what we what we are doing wrong at the moment. well verstappen*s team boss, christian horner, spoke to the bbc earlier and said his driver's dedication to the sport is something which makes him stand out above the rest. verstappen*s ahead of lando norris in the drivers* championship by 62 points and his achievements will be appreciated by the fans in the long run, according to homer. he's one of the most committed drivers or the most committed driver i've ever seen. all the greats, whether it was schumacher or senna, all got criticised for similar traits. and you've got to have that. you've got to have that desire and hunger and drive to achieve the kind of things that max verstappen has done over the years.
11:48 am
so, yeah, i think that we're only just starting to recognise or, you know, the fans and the industry are onlyjust starting to recognise the level of ability that he actually has. jannik sinner once again cemented his status as world number one by inspiring italy to the davis cup semifinals. sinner first won his singles match to level the tie and then beat the argentinian pair of andres molteni and maximo gonzalez with doubles partner matteo berrettini to complete the comeback. they will face australia in the last four tomorrow in what is a repeat last year's final. germany are against the netherlands in the other semi later on friday. it was action—packed opening day of the first test between australia and india in perth. india won the toss and decided to bat and it looked like that had backfired
11:49 am
when they were bowled out in two sessions forjust 150. australian bowlerjosh hazlewood doing a lot of the damage with five wickets. but australia's also struggled to make runs. they were 67—7 at stumps, trailing by 83 runs. captainjasprit bumrah with four wickets. in baseball, los angeles dodgers* shohei ohtani has won his third mvp award. he is the highest paid player in the sport and was unanimously voted the national league*s star performer by all 30 members of the baseball writers* association of america. the 30—year—old won the american league mvp award in 2021 and 2023 during his time with the los angeles angels. the cleveland browns came from behind to beat the pittsburgh steelers 2a—i9 in a dramatic game on thursday night. the two teams fought through blizzard conditions in ohio.
11:50 am
the browns led early, before the steelers came back to make it 19—18 — calvin austin amongst the scorers. but the browns hit back immediately with nick chubb barging into the end zone for his second touchdown of the match. i don*t know what it looked like on tv, but it was unique to just see it. i stopped looking at the the pictures on the sideline just because it was... you couldn*t tell. but our guys love playing under the lights. they love playing in front of these fans. add the snow element, it was it was pretty cool. south korea*s na—rin an leads after the opening round of the season—ending event on the lpga tour — the cme championship. she had eight birdies and no bogeys in a round of 64 to give her a one—shot lead over america*s angel yin. that*s all the sport for now.

ijust want i just want to remind you ijust want to remind you of that breaking news, gatwick has closed on part of it south terminal. this is a security incident. staff are investigating. they say they are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. all rain services that would normally start at the airport are not stopping there, nor our local buses. we have seen pictures on social media of large groups of passengers being evacuated from the terminal. the airport says the north terminal is operating normally. incoming planes are still able to land at the airport at the moment. i*ve had airport at the moment. i*ve had a quick look at the flight radar and i cannot see any taken off, but i can see some landing. simon colder, what is your understanding of what is happening at the moment?
11:52 am
gatwick is the uk*s second busiest airport. today there would be around 100,000 passengers flying in and out. roughly half of them using the south terminal, which is where we have the problems at the moment. this is the original airport with the railway station built in. we know that sometime after nine o*clock this morning somebody passing through the security check at gatwick had an item which raised very serious security concerns. as a result of that is, the entire south terminal landside, so before the security check, was closed. that includes the railway station, which is built into the south terminal, and the shuttle which runs to and from the north terminal. the south terminal predominantly services
11:53 am
british airways, air malta, ryanair. easyjet has a small presence there, but ryanair. easyjet has a small presence there, but easyjet mostly is from the north terminal. as you say, flights are still landing. if they*re going to the site terminal, people are going to the gate as normal bots are not getting on the air bridge and walking into international arrivals, that has been closed down. they are being put on buses to the north terminal. that means lots of clouds will be building up. they can*t leave the north terminal by the shuttle to go to the station which, by the way, is the busiest airport station normally in the uk. so you have this very difficult situation of thousands of people waiting outside the south terminal to get in for hopefully at their flights, wondering what is going to happen, will they catch them? will the flight be cancelled?
11:54 am
at the same time you have thousands more are arriving and not being sure how they*re going to move on. we not being sure how they're going to move on. we have been showin: going to move on. we have been showing some — going to move on. we have been showing some images _ going to move on. we have been showing some images on - going to move on. we have been showing some images on social. showing some images on social media, large groups of people being evacuated. they are saying at the moment they are impressed with the smooth running of the process, including the provision of water he had been evacuated. the airport authorities have a plan for this. the airport authorities have a plan for this- plan for this. yes, they certainly _ plan for this. yes, they certainly do. _ plan for this. yes, they certainly do. what - plan for this. yes, they certainly do. what is i certainly do. what is interesting of course is people taking inappropriate things through security is nothing new. it happens all the time. it might be somebody bringing a sharp knife through or whatever. it is handled fairly discreetly and quietly. whatever was discovered was clearly of sufficiently alarming magnitude to require this quite extraordinary move. of course there is a zero risk of course there is a zero risk policy and they just want to
11:55 am
get everybody clear. the authorities, and there will be lots of our police there already, will be doing all they can to assess the risk, see if there*s other possibility. this there's other possibility. this we have just _ there's other possibility. this we have just had _ there's other possibility. this we have just had a _ there's other possibility. this we have just had a statement from sussex police. it says police were cold to the site terminal at gatwick airport at 8:20am this morning following the discovery of a suspected prohibited... the safety of the public, staff and other airport users. a security cordon has been put in place whilst the matter is being dealt with as a precaution, an explosive ordnance disposal team is being deployed to the airport. this is causing significant disruption and summer roads around the site terminal have been closed. we advise the public to avoid the area where possible. so we have
11:56 am
confirmation that an item has been fined and luggage. and an explosives ordnance team has been sent. then we*ll be here at the top of the hour. let*s get the weather now. hello. we are about to switch frosty for stormy weather as we head into the weekend. storm bert is set to barrel its way in. if ijust show you the pressure chart, this deep area of low pressure is going to slowly cross, sending multiple hazards our way at different points throughout the weekend. let*s break it down. first of all, snowfall. it*s going to come across some very cold air. the hills of northern uk see the worst of the snowfall, up to 40cm, but even some low—lying areas in scotland, north—east england could get a covering through saturday morning too. that is coupled with heavy rain following on and snowmelt. especially in the west, we could see some flooding and strong winds. the white area showing where the strongest winds will be,
11:57 am
70mph gusts possible, widespread gails, though, right across the uk. storm bert is way out in the atlantic, but the forerunner for the cloud is getting closer to us. earlier, though, you can see we saw cloud from showers just pushing down in that north—westerly wind. they*re going to continue this afternoon across western areas, but unlike recent days, more rain and sleet than snow away from the hills, and that*s because temperatures are lifting a touch. eastern and southern parts largely dry and sunny through the afternoon. even though those temperatures have lifted a little bit, it still feels every bit as cold with a bit more breeze. as the breeze falls light this evening and overnight temperatures are going to drop like a stone and the first run of storm bert starts to push in towards some very cold conditions. maybe —12 in parts of the grampians. widespread frost to begin with elsewhere. as storm bert hits, snow will start to fall. at the moment, a met office warning for snow and ice, particularly across the southern half of the grampians. we could see up to 40cm of snow on higher ground. wet snow accumulating on power lines could bring them down. really, for a short while, northern ireland and wales* hills, but northern england, scotland seeing the bulk of the snow before it turns back to rain.
11:58 am
outbreaks of rain elsewhere, maybe not as much across some southern counties of england as we will see for others, but you will get your turn on sunday. temperatures still on the cold side across the northern half of the uk, much milder air pushing in to the south and the west. through the evening outbreaks of rain push across england and wales, they are going to continue into the night. rainfall totals continue to tot up in south—west england especially, and we still have the centre of storm bert way off towards the west. on sunday, the strongest winds will be here across the north—west of the country. the heaviest of the rain towards the south and south—east. in between, sunshine and showers. still a fairly mild day compared to what we have had, but a windy night to come to take us into monday.
