ago. saying it will bring stability to day—to—day spending through tax receipts, and the aim is to grow the economy. not everybody in the business community thinks she has got it right. let's speak to theo leggett, our business correspondence. this morning, we heard from the director—general of the cbi, and she was making the point that many people in the hall and in the lobbies behind me were expressing privately that they feel disgruntled that there were £25 billion worth of extra taxes on business, and she made it clear that that had to be the end of it, that business was happy to contribute towards rebuilding public services, financing the nhs and so on, but it should never happen again. you have been listening to rachel reeves herself, and she doesn't seem to have made that pledge. she

said, if i didn't make those difficult decisions, we would not have been able to bring the stability that the economy needs. she went on to say the public finances are now on a firm footing, which means we won't have to come back for more. that is key, and it is certainly what many people will have been waiting for, the fact that there is pain, it's not good. they say it is inhibiting them from investing because of increasing national insurance contributions, meaning they cannot invest in the future as well, and they may have to rein in plans to employ more people or even cut staff. but if that is the end of it, it is something they can live with, they will put on the hair shirt. rachel reeves says they won't come back for more, and thatis won't come back for more, and that is something the business community wants to hear. now they will wait to see what she will do to help them, with business rates, in order to promote growth. certainty is
