hello there, and welcome along to the programme, it really is a case of the arne slot machine at liverpool continuing to pay out. what an evening for them in the champions league on wednesday, they got the better of holders real madrid, winning two goals to nil at anfield, which ends a long winless spell against the holders. liverpool hadn't won in the last eight meetings in the tournament, including two champions league finals. but there was no stopping them against their spanish opponents. alexis mac allister, and then cody gakpo in the second half, with the goals. earlier, kylian mbappe had a penalty saved by kwaveen kelleher with mo salah also missing from the spot.

but nothing seems to be able to stop the momentum of slot*s side. five wins out five for them, they go back to the top of the champions league group. and their incredible form goes on. the bbc*sjohn murray was there for us. it proved to be a memorable night for liverpool reading against real madrid for the first time in 15 years and this part they had going from strength to strength. now they have been the champions league holders. i don't think anybody saw the start from liverpool the season, top of the premier league, top of the champions league. deserved winners this evening. they went up a level in the second half, started superbly and bradley and mcallister linked up moments before the goal, linked up well. they got the second goal after

a particularly poor night missing a penalty. an eventful evening but liverpool came through very well. the only downside would be the injuries to bradley who came off and looked like he had some sort of hamstring injury and right at the end last moment of the game, went down and down for a while after the final whistle. that would be a concern going into the big game on sunday. most certainly. but for mbappe and both have penalties in the same match and neighbour to score, that is a collectors item. you could not make that up. salah missing the target completely. what a keeper. that tells us about the strength and depth liverpool have within their squad. probably in that respect stronger than manchester city,

stronger than arsenal. but a superb save. you are used to seeing the back of the net goals when they step up from 12 yards. it really has been a dream start for slot then, his liverpool side are flying high domestically, well ahead of the rest and also continue to set the standard in europe too. i liked a lot of what i saw. not everything. we controlled the first half with creating a few chances but also bought we were still a bit sloppy so we lost the ball and an easy situation orforced a bit too much. try to be even more patient, that the gaps open up instead of forcing them. it helps if the first seven minutes after halftime, we had total dominance. they didn't even come across

the halfway. if they had not scored a goal like this we would be flying. aston villa were so close to ending their winless run in all competitions, but they had a late goal ruled out againstjuventus, which they thought had won them the game. diego carlos fouled the juventus keeper, michele di gregorio, as morgan rogers struck home. villa's best chance coming from lucas digne who hammered a free kick off the crossbar seconds before halftime. a brilliant save from villa keeper emi martinez kept the home side in it, they miss the chance to move into the top eight, but still have a great chance of going through. i think the match was very tactical, but we were more or less thinking everything happened more or less it was in our plan. of course i think

this is far or both teams and i'm really happy. and celtic came from behind to salvage a draw against club brugge and what a calamity it was for the belgian side's opener. cameron carter—vickers passed the ball into his own net, with keeper kasper schmeichel out of position. they got themselves back in the game, in the second half. daizan maeda, with a superb goal, to level the match. i—i it finished. sometimes the game can get away from you. but we stayed with it, we showed showed mentality, never to quit, keep going and we were much better and freer in the second half. on eight points, we can still get to very much on course to where we want to get to and still three games to go. plenty of significance in the wednesday's other results. dortmund are back in the picture, after a 3—0 win

over dinamo zagreb. jamie gittens again on the scoresheet for them, the englishman having an impressive season. lille won away at bologna and a late turnaround for benfica, saw them end the unbeaten record of monaco. they won 3—2. on—loan burnley forward zeki amdouni came off the bench to score an 88th—minute winner. all the other results on your screen now. and this is how the top of the table looks. liverpool, back where they were at the start of the week. back above inter and barcelona, as their 100% record goes on. dortmund break back into the top four, thanks to the their win. and monaco missed the chance to go potentially second. instead they're in eighth. manchester united face bodo glimpt on thursday, in the europa league, head coach ruben amorim's first european game with his new club. the former sporting boss was on fire with his former club in european competition, part of that reason was the form victor gyokeres, who united have been increasingly linked with.

goals have been a problem with united this term. only everton and the bottom two, crystal palace and southampton, have scored fewer than their 13 goals in the premier league this season. i think we have to improve at the team. we have quality players they can score so many goals but you can feel in the second half. we controlled the possession of the ball but we were not dangerous. maybe because we spent the week trying to work on buildup. and then the rest was not work. we will try to improve as a team and then score more goals. meanwhile, bad news for tottenham ahead of their home tie against roma on thursday, with ange postecoglou confirming goalkeeper guglielmo vicario will be out for "months, not weeks" with a broken ankle. vicario had surgery after playing for 60 minutes with the injury against manchester city on saturday.

the 28—year—old needed treatment in the first half following a collision with city winger savinho, but went on to play the full game as tottenham won 4—0. a testament to him as a person. he is as tough as nails, as tough as they come, the fact he played at that level for 60 odd minutes with a fractured ankle. it was quite outstanding. once the shock of it wears off, you just have to process he is going to be missing for a while. south africa will resume on 80—4 on day two of the first test against sri lanka. lahiru kumara took 2—35 as sri lanka's bowlers had the better of a rain—hit opening day at kingsmead. home captain temba bavuma and kyle verreynne will resume at the crease on thursday. both sides are still in the running for a place in the world test championship final, but will likely have to win at least three of their final four
