welcome to the world today — an hour of international news from the bbc. south korea is in the grip of an extraordinary political crisis, after the president suddenly imposed military rule. president yun made the surprise announcement late at night, local time, claiming he was protecting the country against north korean forces. but there was immediate pushback from the president�*s own party and the opposition democratic party who called on the public to gather at the national assembly where there were clashes with police. in the last couple of hours, opposition mps who have the majority, have voted to block the martial law declaration — but south korea�*s military has said it will maintain the president�*s order, until he lifts it. amid fears about what happens next, the us state department has expressed its concern at events which threaten to destabilise one of the region�*s leading democracies.
