israel's advanced air defences, injuring more than a dozen. and the us avoids a christmas government shutdown, after lawmakers vote in favour of a budget deal for three months. you are live with bbc news. this is magdeburg, a city in shock, after more than five people were killed and 200 injured when a car last night ploughed into this christmas market in the centre of the city. you can see where i am now the aftermath of that attack. you can see the stalls that should at this time on a saturday afternoon, dates from christmas, should have been a hive of life, activity and

happiness, but they are shot, even though some christmas lights are still shining. you can see on the ground some of the detritus from the attack and the efforts that were made to try and create and save some of those people. you can even see some of the blankets that were used to keep the injured warm and the bits of medical equipment that are still around at the moment. what is happening is that police are really starting an intensive investigation to find out more about how this could have happened, in an area which should have been secured the there have been attacks on christmas markets in germany before, notably in berlin in 2016, and places like this have security for the there a big concrete blocks down the road decide to stop cars going in but what we saw last night was a really graphic cctv footage captured from nearby of a car coming off the road and ploughing at speed between these rows of stalls at the christmas market. you could see

people being thrown out of the way with force, 200 people have been injured here, really putting pressure on the local hospitals, and what we have here, i want to show you around the other side of the camera, some of the people who have come out to lay flowers. they have come to light candles. many people on the other side of the road are just standing in silence and contemplated this scene. it is a very sizeable christmas market area as well. it's a big square right in the centre of the certificate all the way round to the other side are scenes like this one, people just trying to work out what happened last night. some people are in tears, thinking about loved ones and friends who were involved in that attack yesterday, and many people are laying flowers and lighting candles. the german

chancellor, olaf scholz, has been here in the last couple of hours and promised a full investigation. we know that the man who was arrested is from saudi arabia but he has been in germany for 20 years, a doctor, 50 years old. very little is officially known about his motivation although the interior ministry did say that they believe there was possibly an islamophobic motivation to this attack, but there is a lot of detail but we still need to know, that we are waiting to find out about. damien mcguinness has the latest. decorations still festoon magdeburg's christmas market but the mood is desolate. as local people tried to come to terms with last night's fatal attack. festive night out turned into a nightmare. when a man fatally ploughed a car into a large crowd. translation: the cars sped past i us and the police ran after it. i other emergency services

arrived, evacuated people and diverted traffic. people were still panicking and screaming. the suspected perpetrator, a saudi—born doctor who first came to germany in 2006, has been arrested. police are still working to uncover the motive. with all of germany in shock, german chancellor olaf schultz has come to the site of the tragedy together with regional leaders. translation: it is a dreadful tragedy that so many people i were killed and injured. it is a dreadful catastrophe. we send our sympathy to those who were injured and i expressed the solidarity of the entire country. the devastation left behind by the attack at the christmas market is still very visible. politicians were here just a few mates ago to pay their respects but the motor speed rail. local people were shouting and brewing as politicians vote

because they feel security just wasn't good enough. christmas markets are a traditional part of german life at this time of year. something everyone goes through. so people are in shock, asking why this happened. translation: it is so sad that something like this happens. i we are protecting ourselves with bollards and everything. it is terrible, especially now at christmas time. as people here mourn, the search for an answer goes on. that really is the prevailing mood this afternoon, a sense of solemnity and morning and real shock and disbelief that just a few hours ago something so terrible happened in the heart of this community, and people really still unable to work out why or get the answers they are seeking. we are hearing stories from people who were here as this happened. so unexpected. damien was talking about the

and so many people were injured and so many people were injured and killed with such brutality of the more than two of the people have been injured. there are five fatalities so far. and so many people are seriously injured that we are seriously concerned about what will happen to them. it's a dreadful catastrophe. we want to express our empathy and sympathy to those who are injured and to the families of those who are injured, to the families and friends of those who have been killed, and i would like to express the solidarity of the entire country. we are all profoundly touched and shocked and feel the need to stand and pull together, and will indeed do so for the it is impressive that so many people stepped in to help immediately, including the people working at the christmas market and visiting the christmas market. it's

great to see that the police and fire brigade responded so rapidly and many people came to help to really provide tangible assistance straightaway. it was very moving, talking to the people who were working here as first responders and who had that kind of event that affects everybody. everybody has to respond rapidly and the professional response has meant the situation is not worse than it already is. at the same time, we know that this is something that the emergency services will have to struggle with the memory of. right across germany, providing support to the emergency services in this kind of situation, so nobody is left alone with their memories. that

is even more the case for those who were injured and the families of the victims as well. providing support in hospitals and moving forward, to get to grips with this catastrophe and the ramifications for its innocent victims. this dreadful, crazy event. it's important now that we investigate in detail with great precision, what has happened. we need to look into all of the background to this deed. providing all resources required to do that. of course, we need to investigate the perpetrator. of course, subsequently, draw other consequences and respond. what is important to me is that,

when you have this kind of atrocity happening, this kind of dreadful incident, with so many people killed and injured, almost to the day the anniversary of the attack in berlin, and it's important to me that we stand united, that we talk to each other, we should not disseminate hatred, we remain a community with a shared future. we should not allow those who wish to so hate to do so. but, of course, the perpetrators cannot get off scot free, they must be punished for what has happened, in all cases. that is part and parcel of our shared future. i have experienced a great deal of solidarity from all over the world, where people have sent personal messages. it's a very
