things are not much better at his former club, manchester united — their manager admits they're in a battle against the drop. and olympic champion imogen grant is among the sporting stars recognised in the new year honours list. it list. is so cool, it is so special. i feel it is so cool, it is so special. i feel so grateful. to be honest, there aren't really words to described the warm, fuzzy feeling that i've got. welcome along. we'll start with wayne rooney's departure from the championship*s bottom side plymouth argyle. just four league wins in 23 league games in charge has spelt the end for the former england captain. our sports correspondent katie gornall has been following today's developments at home park.

wayne at home park. rooney had been under pressure for wayne rooney had been under pressure for some time at plymouth argyle, because results had been so poor, but i think it is interesting this decision comesjust but i think it is interesting this decision comes just three weeks after mike phelan, former united assistant boss, was brought in to assistant boss, was brought in to assist him. that was seen at the time is a real show of support and perhaps an understanding that this was a young squad depleted by injury, but clearly results had dipped to a point where the board felt they had to act. plymouth argyle haven't won away from home all season. they have conceded more goals than any other club, and the fans have turned on rooney as well, they were booing and calling for him to go after the recent 2—0 defeat to oxford on sunday, and 48 hours later they have announced he has departed by mutual consent. when rooney released a statement, he said plymouth argyle will always hold a special place in my heart and i will continue to look out for take an interest their results. so his time

at plymouth has come to an end. what next for wayne rooney? i at plymouth has come to an end. what next for wayne rooney?— next for wayne rooney? i think it does raise — next for wayne rooney? i think it does raise a _ next for wayne rooney? i think it does raise a question _ next for wayne rooney? i think it does raise a question about - next for wayne rooney? i think it i does raise a question about whether he has a future in management, because unlike his playing cv, his managerial cv is hardly glittering. at derby county he did win praise for leading through a difficult period when they had few resources and few blowers to call on and little or no money, but after that he went to dc united in america, he left there by mutual consent after failing to get them into the play—offs last year, and before he arrived at home park, he was sacked at birmingham city after less than three months in charge, so that was a pretty disastrous spell. so he has had four goes it being a manager, and each spell at a club has been fairly fraught, so you would have to say in the short term at least it is difficult to see where another opportunity might come from, particularly in the uk. i think it

is probably easier to see him may be going back into punditry, an area where he is well regarded and in demand. next to rooney's old club, manchester united. their current boss ruben amorim concedes that they may be heading for a relegation fight. it follows yet another defeat last night, this time to newcastle united. 2—0 at old trafford, that leaves them in 14th place, just seven points above the relegation zone. you have to go back 50 years for the last time manchester united were relegated, but amorim says it is now "a possibility". the worst moments in the history of our club. and we have to accept that. another loss in front of our supporters, and newcastle were better. looking at the table, it does not look at all pretty. you are edging ever closer to the relegation zone. do you feel as though it it might be a battle to avoid the drop?
6:35 pm
i think it is a possibility and we have to be clear with our fans so we have to change something. we're going to hear from a former manchester united manager in a moment. that's becuase david moyes is amongst those honoured in the new years list. he's one of many big sporting names to be recognised. hannah cockroft becomes a cbe after her heroics at the paralympics, whilst keely hodgkinson and katarina johnson—thompson become mbes. and former england football manager gareth southgate recieves a knighthood, as laura scott reports. he gave the three lions their roar back, taking england to the brink of glory. gareth southgate never got the perfect swansong, but today came recognition for his efforts and achievements. eight years, four major tournaments, two majorfinals, major tournaments, two major finals, more major tournaments, two majorfinals, more than 100 games as manager. now a knighthood. from the year rose to the olympics, soon it was paris
