can see at multiple emergency services vehicles with their blue lights flashing. we know that after the incident, multiple police and ambulance were dispatched to the scene. social media footage which appears to have been filmed today also suggest that in numerous shots were fired by the driver of the vehicle and that they show multiple people on the ground with injuries as well as others running away from the area. let me gets you a sense of where the united states had this happened. it happened in louisiana in the city of new orleans in the french quarter around bourbon street which is famous around the world for its bars and clubs. the location itself has been completely sealed off and police as they nodded to head to that area. this is the statement that we got from the city authorities, it said it was a mass casualty event on a canal and bourbon street. the

is a part of new orleans where people go to celebrate, whether it is celebrating big events like this or they are just walking around and visiting the city or being in the city. they may go to some shops, bars and the restaurants especially at this hour. presumably, while this hour. presumably, while this was pretty early in the day, this is a part of new orleans where you do have a lot of people who are on for it and milling about in the streets, so this, as we are hearing, 30 injuries, ten fatalities, those numbers could change over time as we get more information from law enforcement but that's part is still incredibly shocking. absolutely. it is a very, very shocking. i'm also seen that there was a big college american football game due to take place in new orleans said they would have been a lot of people for that as well as well as the new year celebrations. this is a time when people flock to new orleans notjust for new year's but also for the

sugar bowl, so a lot of people week in the city are looking for a good time and we know that new orleans as much as any city in the words, had really stepped up its police enforcement as well as its security because of the new year's celebrations and because of these big events that are happening. a lot of questions this morning as to exactly what happened and if anything, what went wrong along the way. so 'ust went wrong along the way. so just recap the authorities are just recap the authorities are just expected to hear from them shortly but they did come out quite quickly with this number of people who had died. yes. of people who had died. yes, that is right. _ of people who had died. yes, that is right. it _ of people who had died. yes, that is right. it came - of people who had died. yes, that is right. it came up - that is right. it came up pretty quickly. it was within the first couple of hours of the first couple of hours of the story, ten fatalities and 30 injured. all that potentially change? we are not sure yet but we didn't know from some of our reporters on the ground, they say that
12:05 pm
witnesses reported seeing multiple people lying immobile on the streets and that the coroner has been called to the area as well. again, this would have likely be an indication that there were some fatalities here. the stories and situations like this, when it comes to hard and fast numbers, it is always important that that could change and evolve whether there are certain people who are double counted or the status of a person may change so the numbers that we have at this point i10 fatalities and at least 30 injured. i suppose it would be harderfor injured. i suppose it would be harder for emergency services because it sounds like injuries could have been caused by both the car driving into the crowd. also, it may be that people have got gunshot injuries. exactly these are all of the things that we are waiting to get more clarity on, exactly who was injured by what and who was impacted by what and
12:06 pm
precisely what's transpired here. because there are reports of a gunfight between law enforcement and an individual as well as there is a vehicle that rammed through the crowd here as new orleans so a lot of questions that we are waiting to get a bit more clarity on. this is something that happened a a couple of hours ago. as law enforcement on the scene and collect more information, then hopefully provided to us and we can inform people about what went on. this is also happening in the shadow of a couple of miles of the christmas market attack that happened in germany, just a couple of months ago. these are points of his where law enforcement and people in these regulatory situations where watching out for and had at the top of their minds. i for and had at the top of their minds. . ,, . ., ., minds. i appreciate that we both do not _ minds. i appreciate that we both do not know _ minds. i appreciate that we both do not know exact - minds. i appreciate that we i both do not know exact details at the moment but i assume that

something like this, the white house may later come out with a statement when you have had so many people lose their lives around new year's eve and new year's day?— year's day? that is something that likely _ year's day? that is something that likely would _ year's day? that is something that likely would have - year's day? that is something that likely would have and - that likely would have and typically in situations like this, whether international or one that the cause may be. we may hear something from the white house and the probably awaiting for more information to come in from law enforcement and exactly what they know at this point with what happened. another big question that we have here is of the drive by them self and what might have happened along the way —— the status of the driver themselves. is there anything that they've been able to gleam from whether it was an altercation with the driver so altercation with the driver so a lot of questions the two are still waiting for answers on a.
12:08 pm
that is interesting because the authority statement talks about the number of people, the ten who lost their lives only 30 injured, but we have no word on the suspect or anything. sometimes you know that there is someone still on the run or has not been found but we have had none of that this time, have we?— had none of that this time, have we? ., , * , have we? that is due. at this point. no _ have we? that is due. at this point, no concrete _ have we? that is due. at this | point, no concrete information on the staters of the driver or the person that might be involved in this —— on the status of the driver. that is something that we are hoping to get more clarity on from law enforcement when they do provide an update which hopefully will be happening relatively soon at this morning. we do know that they have said that you're going to be providing some sort of update fairly soon i will just have to wait at this point to see what happens there. thank ou ve see what happens there. thank you very much _ see what happens there. thank you very much for _ see what happens there. thank you very much for your- see what happens there. thank you very much for your time. . you very much for your time. that is our cbs news

they were watching the city's fireworks display and enjoy the new year's day atmosphere in the french quarter when they had crashing noises coming from down the street and they then said that they saw a white truck slammed through a barricade and to quote them, at a higher rate of speed. they then said they heard gunshots after the crashing noises and went to try and help people they found we did but they realise that the victims had died. they said we were pretty close to where it started. they estimated that the truck hit people earlier about a block away from where they had actually been walking. they go on to tell cbs, once it was a past us, we did hear gunfire. we saw police running in that direction. once the gunfire

stopped, we stopped in the alcove until the gunfire stopped and came out into the street and came across a lot of, they say, several people who had been hit. we wanted to see what we could do to help, they said. they said the victims had injuried from the truck impact and they do not see any apparent gunshot wounds, they said they left the area once the emergency responders started arriving. that is some eyewitnesses from there in the area. sean dilley is still with us in the newsroom and i was just reading that i witness account. it was quite rumoured as to what that couple saw happening in new orleans. it couple saw happening in new orleans. , my couple saw happening in new orleans. , ., ., orleans. it is tricky enough at watchin: orleans. it is tricky enough at watching this _ orleans. it is tricky enough at watching this from _ orleans. it is tricky enough at watching this from landing . orleans. it is tricky enough at watching this from landing as| orleans. it is tricky enough at. watching this from landing as a presenter. just think of the

this morning. this is if you arejust drain us on bbc news let me recap on what has happened. there has been a mass casualty incident in new orleans in the french course of the city, popular with tourists and we know that ten people have been killed —— back in the french quarter of the city. ten people have been killed, 30 others injured. they have been transported to a number of hospitals in the new orleans area. what we do not know at the moment is how seriously injured those people are. reports say that a vehicle slammed into a crowd on the intersection of canal and bourbon street. they are also reports that there was a gunfire between someone in the vehicle and the police, but that has not been confirmed at the moment. we have been
12:21 pm
hearing from our colleagues at cbs, our partner broadcaster in the united states, talking to eyewitnesses. a couple was talking to them saying that they had crashing noises coming down the street and saw a white truck slammed through a barricade, at a high rate of speed, which they describe. they also had a decent gun shots after new crashing noises and there were a lot of videos circulating on social media that you can hear gunshots in the area. this couple were very close to the scene and reckoned that it was only a block away from where they were and after the initial crashing noises and gunfire, they did come out into the street and came across a lot of people who had been hit. they wanted to see what they could do to help. interestingly, this couple said that the injuries they saw where from the impact from the

vehicle which they described as a truck and they did not see any apparent gunshot wounds. they, of course, try to help but then they said they left the area once the emergency responders started arriving. when the in incident like this, thatis when the in incident like this, that is what the authorities do, they send as many police and ambulance as they possibly can to deal with the incident. we now know that this happened at around 3:15am local time, thatis at around 3:15am local time, that is 915 gmt -- at around 3:15am local time, that is 915 gmt —— 9:15pm at around 3:15am local time, that is 915 gmt -- 9:15pm gmt. the alley would have been busy because it was new year's eve into new year's day and this area is also very popular, it was area. if you have ever been to new orleans, you will know that that particular area is very busy. we know that is, a vehicle is be described as a

12:24 pm
violence, that will strike right at the heart of america's and those in new orleans. 3:a0am in the morning, you can picture that whether you are watching, what were you doing at 3:a0am in the morning assuming that you're not working today who were your party in? were you involved in reverie at the communal atmosphere? that was exactly with an awful lot of these people would have been doing, an awful lot of them would have been enjoying the night, celebrating with champagne and cocktails. maybe not necessarily sharply paying attention to traffic because he would think that a vehicle with ploughing to the crowds? ten fatalities is what authorities have confirmed so far and 30 injured. we do say quite rightly, we do not know the extent of those injuries but with 30 fatalities and —— with ten fatalities and 30 injured,... i ten fatalities and 30

these ms what habit it is the statement get delayed —— —— what happens is these statements gets delayed. they are trained as much as they can to clarify what they can tell the media. we are keeping an eye on that door where we expected this statement to happen. i mentioned a little earlier, we have had some reaction from the louisiana governor, his name isjeff landry, who posted on ex that he was playing for the victims and first responders on the scene and said that it was a horrific act of violence that took place on bourbon street earlier this morning. he said that pleasejoin sharon earlier this morning. he said that please join sharon and i in praying for all the victims and first responders on the scene. i urge all on the scene to avoid the area. if we can show this pictures again, the scene, you can see that there is a lot of police activity in
12:27 pm
this area. you can see that the police are still there. they are trying to work out what has happened. this is always the case that when there are these incidents. the police really try to find of all, help the people who have been injured and secondly, investigate what has actually happened. the priority always in these cases is to save anybody*s lives if they can so we will keep an eye on these pictures but a little earlier, i spoke to gary to hill, the cbs news correspondent who was monitoring this in new york and is what he told us about what we knew had happened so far. from what we know at this point, about three or four hours ago, there was reportedly
12:28 pm
this vehicle, what has been described as a truck of some kind, that applies to crowds of people in the french quarter district, a big area where there are bars, nightclubs, people milling about. this was new year's eve or on the back end of new year's eve, early new year's day as this was happening. they are still some questions around all of this why did this happen? what was the potential motive if there wasn't one to begin with and we also hearing from some of our cbs report is on the ground is dead that there was reportedly an exchange of gunfire between someone in that vehicle and law enforcement outside of the vehicle and this according to what witnesses were telling them. they're still awaiting an official press conference of some kind from new orleans police department and new orleans city officials which is expected at any moment at this point. this is something that is really taking the city and the country by surprise this
