they may indeed if they were... they may well be a us citizen. we don't know and we are getting into the realms of speculation as to who or what the motive might be. . . , , ., , who or what the motive might be. ., , , ., be. yeah, absolutely, we should kee an be. yeah, absolutely, we should keep an open — be. yeah, absolutely, we should keep an open mind. _ be. yeah, absolutely, we should keep an open mind. rowan - keep an open mind. rowan bridge, thank you. let's speak to cbs news correspondent, jarred hill. good to have you with this. lots of questions about motive and about the suspect still open. and about the suspect still 0 en. . and about the suspect still 0 en, ., ., * , and about the suspect still 0 en. . ., * , ~ and about the suspect still oen. . . *, * ., open. yeah, that's right. a lot of unanswered _ open. yeah, that's right. a lot of unanswered questions, - of unanswered questions, christian, at this point. what we do know so far is that according to multiple sources, the suspect is dead. we don't know anything about the circumstances around the death. we do know that according to police, after he drove this pick—up truck through the crowd in new orleans he then opened fire, started shooting at police officers. police officers shooting back, we don't know again exactly at

what point in that altercation this individual died, but that is one of the big questions. another question here is again the motive. whether this is a lone actor who is acting on a personal grievance and is, if there was any ideological reason for carrying out this attack and across the board is being called something that was intentional. there is at this point at least according to authorities no question that this was a man who they say to to inflict carnage on the people of new orleans. in to inflict carnage on the people of new orleans. in terms ofthe people of new orleans. in terms of the investigation _ people of new orleans. in terms of the investigation which - people of new orleans. in terms of the investigation which is - of the investigation which is unfolding, where do you think the initial focus will be? because there were 300 officers on the streets last night, security inevitably would be tight for such a busy evening, new year's eve. where do you think the initial focus will be? ., ~ ., ., be? so, what we know right now is that the _ be? so, what we know right now is that the additional _ be? so, what we know right now is that the additional focus - be? so, what we know right now is that the additional focus is - is that the additional focus is on the ground, because there was, according to the fbi agent

on the scene there, she said that there were explosive devices that were found, or at least an explosive to device that was found at the scene of the crash. they have created this eight block radius around the specific street, the specific scene, where they are telling people not to go. anybody in new orleans saying don't be there. because they are looking to see whether there are other explosive devices in the area, if any of those are as they say viable, until there was at least 15 or 20 minutes ago concern about safety and the focus of the area. that will be number one, seen what they can find on the scene. as we have seen in other situations like this, especially when the suspect or the perpetrator dies at the scene, is that the investigation starts digging in to everything from the family background to whether there is an online presence that might shed some light on any sort of thinking is or planning is, because as we do know and as
2:33 pm
authorities are suspecting here, this was something that was not a spur of the moment decision. they believe there was at least a little bit of thought that went into this, just based on the ways some of this was carried out. again, the question whether these explosive devices were planted potentially in parts of new orleans and parts of the french quarter. also again they say this was not a drunk driver, they say this person drove around the barricades, never intended to stop people from driving through this part of new orleans as part of the french quarter, so there was intention behind this. the question is why.— intention behind this. the question is why. intention behind this. the cuestion is wh . ., , ., question is why. for people who are watching _ question is why. for people who are watching around _ question is why. for people who are watching around the - question is why. for people who are watching around the world i are watching around the world and may not be familiar with new orleans, tell me a little bit about bourbon street and what happens at this time of yearin what happens at this time of year in bourbon street. yeah, so if new— year in bourbon street. yeah, so if new orleans _ year in bourbon street. yeah, so if new orleans is _ year in bourbon street. yeah, so if new orleans is a - year in bourbon street. yeah, so if new orleans is a city, . year in bourbon street. yeah, so if new orleans is a city, in | so if new orleans is a city, in particular the french quarter, a part that is highly commercial. it is all about people going out, walking
2:34 pm
door—to—door, store to store to store to shop. at that time of night it would be to bars and clubs. three o'clock in the morning sounds late, but in louise louisiana in the french quarter on bourbon street, that is prime time for people being out on the street, especially around new year's eve, because there is this big football game, the sugar bowl, happening today. and so there are tourists who are in town not only celebrating new year's eve but also to celebrate this game. from what we're hearing from law enforcement, the majority of the people who were injured and potentially killed injured and potentially killed in this situation were locals. they don't have the exact numbers and demographics just yet because again this happened only really a couple of hours ago, but they believe largely these were locals. still, you have a lot of folks who were again out on new year's eve walking around. again, this is a pedestrian region for the

most part, and so there likely would have been a lot of people in the street. the question again becomes whether the driver, the suspect in this situation, was taking that into account when he planned to do this today or if this would have just been something that happened any other time. we do know though that this type of activity, this type of attack, is something that law enforcement across the country have been watching out for. we know that new york authorities had been planning for the possibility or, you know, the threat potentially of someone driving through times square. and so their wet sanitation trucks, there were large vehicles being used as barricades to stop any sort of vehicle being used to ram into the crowds. we see this a lot in washington, dc when there are major events, especially political events like the
2:36 pm
upcoming inauguration. so this is something that the authorities here think about and particularly afterjust authorities here think about and particularly after just a couple of days ago the christmas market attack in germany. and so this is something that oftentimes is considered, is planned for and the questions are going to be kind of what happened here in new orleans? just kind of what happened here in new orleans?— kind of what happened here in new orleans? just looking from the outside _ new orleans? just looking from the outside in _ new orleans? just looking from the outside in and _ new orleans? just looking from the outside in and having - the outside in and having recorded myself on similar incidents here in europe, the one in nice was very similar down the main street in nice, a lot of people were killed on that occasion and of course similar incidents in christmas markets in germany. it is becoming more familiar to us here in europe to have these metal bollards in place for big gatherings to protect people where you know there is going to be a lot of people on the street at any one moment in time. do you think... it is unusual in america for a vehicle to be used in this way, but do you think they might turn in america now to whether
2:37 pm
greater security has to be taken? you talk about trucks being put in place in new york, but clearly the technology is not there yet to put up electronic bollards, the kind of which we have here in europe. of which we have here in eur0pe-_ of which we have here in euroe. ~ . , , , europe. what is interesting is that there _ europe. what is interesting is that there are... _ europe. what is interesting is that there are... i _ europe. what is interesting is that there are... i would - europe. what is interesting is that there are... i would have to look at the specific geography and engineering on these particular streets in new orleans, the new orleans does have bollards and posts that are able to come up out of the ground when they believe there would be an event they want to make sure that they can stop vehicles. or whether it is for the intention of driving through and harming people or if it is a drunk driver they want to stop from getting into the crowds. so that is something that is around in something that is around in some of these cities, especially cities like dc and new orleans where there often are these large events with people walking through the streets. one of these questions is going to be in this
2:38 pm
situation, as the authorities and city planners start looking at this on the back end, do they need to do more of this? what does that look like? is the infrastructure therefore that? so these are all likely going to be questions that start to come up over the next couple of days. but as we have seen, a number of cities across the country, across this country, have been looking at other ways to sort of fortify the streets when they have these events or these times when they expect a lot of people to be on the streets to try and make sure that someone is not able to drive through either intentionally or otherwise. this time around it seems as though that it didn't work. ., seems as though that it didn't work. . ,. , seems as though that it didn't work. . , , work. yeah, sadly so. very grateful — work. yeah, sadly so. very grateful for _ work. yeah, sadly so. very grateful for your— work. yeah, sadly so. very grateful for your thoughts, | grateful for your thoughts, thank you for being with us on the programme. let's speak to matthew schmidt, what are your first thoughts and analysis from the press conference she watched an hour
