at least 35 people have been injured — the fbi says they are investigating it as an act of terrorism. what it is right now is improvised explosive devices that were found in we are working _ that were found in we are working on confirming on whether_ working on confirming on whether it was a viable device or not — whether it was a viable device or not. i, t, or not. continuing on the developing _ or not. continuing on the developing story - or not. continuing on the developing story on - or not. continuing on the developing story on a - or not. continuing on the l developing story on a man carrying out an attack on new yorkers day has been reported to be named as shamsud din jabbar according to our partners at cbs news and in the last few minutes by the fbi and in the last few minutes the statement from the fbi agency in this investigation —— lead investigation let me remind you of what they have said. the fbi

says they are aggressively running down all leads to identify any possible associates of the suspect of course this is crucial as my last gus was saying, they need to know if he was acting as a so—called lone wolf or what whether there was a wider conspiracy at play. the fbi just to repeat the name identifying, shamsud din jabbar, 42 years old a us citizen from texas he was driving a rented ford pick—up truck and they are working to confirm how he came to be in that vehicle. they say an ices flag was located in the pick—up truck and the fbi is working to determine the subject's potential affiliations with political and religious organisations. weapons and an ied was also located in the vehicle other potential iuds were located in the french

quarter and the fbi special agent bomb technicians are working with law enforcement to partners to determine if any of the devices are viable and working to make them say. so the facts of what happened at approximately 315 in the morning local time an individual drove a pick—up truck into a crowd of people in bourbon street in new orleans in the frame is french quarter killing ten and injuring dozens of others after hitting the crowd he exited the vehicle, fired at local law enforcement and they returned fire and he was pronounced dead at the scene with two police officers injured and taken to a local hospital where they are said to be in a stable condition. that is the latest statement from the fbi. we are expecting an updated news conference in the next hour. of course we will bring that to you. we can show you these images courtesy

of a earth cam of police officers running towards the scene in the early hours of the morning and local time and this picture from social media checked by bbc verify shows law enforcement, many heavily armed, surrounding that pick—up truck in the aftermath of the incident. the fbi as we say, now the lead agency in this investigation looking into it as an act of terrorism. many of you may know the famous french quarter of new orleans and may have been there. it is a notable and busy nightlife spot and it was the early hours of new year's day local time. so a very busy time. although as we have heard the streets were even busier a few hours prior to this around midnight. also very busy because a big college football game is due to take place later on in new orleans at the sugar bowl. let's show you the scene from the last two hours. it is around lunchtime now in new orleans and of course as you would expect,
6:34 pm
large parts of that french quarter cordon off while the investigations continue. let's speak to news correspondent anna adams in new orleans. just looking at the latest fbi statement coming in talking about bomb technicians working with other law enforcement partners to try to make potential devices safe to determine if they are viable and if so, to make them safe, are those operations still ongoing? in are those operations still ongoing?— are those operations still ongoing? are those operations still onuuoin? ., ., ongoing? in the last hour or so we could actually _ ongoing? in the last hour or so we could actually hear- ongoing? in the last hour or so we could actually hear some i we could actually hear some small detonations going on behind me in the french quarter. i am at the edge of the french quarter, bourbon street where this happen and canal street at the and intersection now this is moving into another neighbourhood about a mile from here, the investigation and i am told that the agents have now moved into a potential air b&b that was potentially being used and
6:35 pm
they have sent dogs in there and that is now a key part of their investigations that is their investigations that is the report i am giving locally that the investigation is still here but it does spreading out across the city. figs here but it does spreading out across the city.— across the city. as they say in the statement _ across the city. as they say in the statement they _ across the city. as they say in the statement they are - the statement they are aggressively, the word they use, running down all leads to identify any possible associates of the suspect and thatis associates of the suspect and that is because they are urgently trying to work out if he was trying to work on his own or if there was a wider conspiracy. own or if there was a wider conspiracy-_ conspiracy. this is a very small city _ conspiracy. this is a very small city especially - conspiracy. this is a very small city especially if i small city especially if anything happened in the french quarter it is the area with the most amount of care americas there are a great deal of ccd cameras in the city but the french quarters heavily camera did so they will be trolling through hours of footage there almost every corner is under cameras so we will see now a lot of the agents have just arrived here and we've also seen the corners come because there are believed to be bodies behind me here still on bourbon street because this is still an
6:36 pm
active crime scene so we have seen the corners band going in and outs i can speculate that they will begin to move some of they will begin to move some of the bodies away from bourbon street. ~ . , ~ ., , street. what is it like to be there right _ street. what is it like to be there right now? _ street. what is it like to be there right now? what - street. what is it like to be there right now? what is i street. what is it like to be l there right now? what is the mood there? some people have come to new orleans to celebrate new year's and also for the big college football game, so what a twist of events and what a horrible thing to wake up to if they were unaware of what has unfolded on the streets in the early hour of the morning.— streets in the early hour of the morning. people are still emerging — the morning. people are still emerging from _ the morning. people are still emerging from their- the morning. people are still emerging from their hotel i the morning. people are still- emerging from their hotel rooms and bleary—eyed in coming out at lunchtime and wondering what happened last night. this could not have been a scene of more joyous revelry, the french quarter was absolutely packed out in the earlier hours of the evening and the streets were thronged. it was a warm night for december and everything happens here on the streets. there was a parade earlier on for the sugar bowl and we had marching bands in the street
6:37 pm
and there were floats and the party then moved back into the french quarter where there was a concert with some big name local acts here and then the fireworks on the mississippi onlyjust a fireworks on the mississippi only just a few fireworks on the mississippi onlyjust a few blocks down. you will have to excuse mike terrible camera works, i'm just turning now. we have the mississippi here and it is a very central is what i am trying to give you the sense of. everything was happening around here and it is a small city. so the mood today is bewilderment because it is not a city without its problems. there is crime here, but no one would ever think that it would be a terrorist attack that would've caused these problems. if anything would have happened, people would think god in order to gain the violence, not something like this and the sense of bewilderment that this is now being described as a terror attack is beginning to hit home. this really is a city
6:38 pm
that really does like to rise after terrible things have and we are seeing some vans coming out here and they're starting to play music —— bands coming out to. to play music -- bands coming out to. * , ., ., to play music -- bands coming out to. *, ., ., , out to. let's find out a bit more about _ what it was like to be on the scene of this attack in the early hours of the morning local time. our reporter steve knibbs spoke to a witness, steve hyde, who was in new orleans to celebrate his 44th birthday a few days ago. i'v e i've been here many times, but i've been here many times, but i am told what it was like last night is what it was like for mardi gras. it wasjust night is what it was like for mardi gras. it was just a massive, massive part of it but everyone so happy, but increasing numbers of people. the atmosphere was just amazing. the fireworks were beautiful. i was in a bar called the terrence rose and it
6:39 pm
is about 15 or 20 metres from bourbon street and we were all having a great time in i had beenin having a great time in i had been in there for a two and half hours at that point and then we heard shots and saw people running past the window and didn't really know what was going on. obviously we heard it and we knew it was not going to be good but we knew, "ok, it's a shooting and someone has been shot" and obviously that was not the case. they shuddered down the windows, locked the doors and we all sort of... in a way supposedly try to carry on in a way because we did not know anything. things were a
6:40 pm
lot quieter at that point. and then all of the silence started. then we started to know it was more. bearing in mind fireworks had been going off all night and you hear bangs and the fireworks had been going off for hours and hours before midnight as well. so the noise you grow accustomed to by that point. but we were alljust accustomed to by that point. but we were all just talking and wondering, what has happened and what do we do. the bar staff were great. they were all very calm and everyone in the bar was, as well. we didn't know. i then went to sleep. you know, ok, not really sure on what is happening and then woke up what is happening and then woke up this morning and, yeah... just calling family and saying,
6:41 pm
don't worry. i'm ok. just heartbroken. i love the city and i love the people. and in no way to doesn't deserve this, the city and these people do not deserve this.— the city and these people do not deserve this. witness steve s-ueakin not deserve this. witness steve speaking to _ not deserve this. witness steve speaking to our— not deserve this. witness steve speaking to our reporter- speaking to our reporter earlier. us presidentjoe biden said he'd been continually briefed on the situation and that he's directed his team to ensure every resource is available to assist authorities. in a written statement, he said, "there is no justification for violence of any kind, and we will not tolerate any attack on any of our nation's communities." i've spoken to every member of the agencies, from the cia to our national security team to our fbi and nsc, and we're going to gather all the... and i spent a lot of time with the mayor. what was your reaction when you heard what happened? well, my reaction was one of anger and frustration. thank you.
6:42 pm
we've also had reaction from president—elect donald trump, in a post on truthsocial. quote, "when i said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by democrats and the fake news media, but it turned out to be true. the crime rate in our country is at a level that nobody has ever seen before. our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the new orleans police department. the trump administration will fully support the city of new orleans as they investigate and recover from this act of pure evil!" we have heard since the statement that the suspect is a us citizen. drew hawkins is a reporter for the gulf states newsroom in new orleans who was at the scene earlier. speaking to us earlier, he told my colleague christian fraser about the immediate aftermath which he described as
6:43 pm
"chaos and carnage". i think horrific is the word that immediately comes to mind. with the fence like this, big events like new year's eve, city and state officials will put out information about concerns about gun violence. being in the united states that can be front and centre of mind. but with the idea of the fbi investigating of them investigating a potential incident of terrorism or using a vehicle to drive through the crowd, it's not something that anyone would expect to happen. who did you speak to when you were on the scene? did you come across people who had been there? i across people who had been there? ., ., across people who had been there? ., ,, ., ., there? i did. i talked to two eyewitnesses. _ there? i did. i talked to two eyewitnesses. they - there? i did. i talked to two eyewitnesses. they were i eyewitnesses. they were visiting from iowa. a lot of people are in town right now notjust people are in town right now not just for the events people are in town right now notjust for the events of people are in town right now not just for the events of the new year's eve events, but also for the sugar bowl which is a big college football game that actually happens tonight. so the city has a lot of people visiting for these events and
6:44 pm
what they described was walking down bourbon street, just after three in the morning, the street is full of people and they are celebrating. i'm not sure if you are familiar with bourbon street but it is an old and a narrow road and what they described was hearing a crashing sound behind them, turning around and seeing a white pick—up truck pick up speed, accelerating, driving through barricades, driving into the crowd of people and they were actually able to move out of the way just they were actually able to move out of the wayjust in time to hide in an alcove as the truck drove by. you are essentially trapped in that street. they describe bodies everywhere. many immediately apparent that they were deceased. reallyjust chaos and carnage in the immediate aftermath. that's not somethina immediate aftermath. that's not something i _ immediate aftermath. that's not something i have _ immediate aftermath. that's not something i have heard - immediate aftermath. that's not something i have heard before. l something i have heard before. that you are almost trapped. it does at the way that the street is built? there are no places to run or get out of the way of the vehicle that may be leaving from one side to the other.
6:45 pm
that's actually a good point. that's actually a good point. that the truck was not actually weaving, it did not have to come the roads are narrow enough that it could just drive straight. another thing that makes it especially scary is that it makes it especially scary is thatitis makes it especially scary is that it is new year's eve and bourbon street is a very lively area. there is a lot of music coming out of the nightclubs and the people i spoke with mentioned that a lot of people probably could not even hear what was happening behind them because of the loud music so it may have taken them completely by surprise. did may have taken them completely by surprise-— by surprise. did you get any idea as to — by surprise. did you get any idea as to how _ by surprise. did you get any idea as to how that - by surprise. did you get any idea as to how that truck i by surprise. did you get any i idea as to how that truck came to a halt? we have seen initial pictures of the bonnet crumpled up pictures of the bonnet crumpled up towards the rins screen, how did it stop? == up towards the rins screen, how did it step?— did it stop? -- windscreen. a crash. did it stop? -- windscreen. a crash- it _ did it stop? -- windscreen. a crash. it came _ did it stop? -- windscreen. a crash. it came to _ did it stop? -- windscreen. a crash. it came to a _ did it stop? -- windscreen. a crash. it came to a halt - crash. it came to a halt because a crash. at that moment the driver came out of the truck and exchanged fire with the police officers and police fired back and that is when he was shot and killed. you
