a group of police officers running toward the scene. and this picture from social media, checked by bbc verify, shows law enforcement, many heavily armed, surrounding a white pick—up truck in the aftermath of the incident. the fbi has taken over the investigation and confirmed that they're looking into this as an act of terrorism. the incident took place in the central french quarter of new orleans, a notable and busy nightlife spot, in the early hours of new year's day local time. this was the scene in the last few hours. it's around lunchtime there now. large parts of that french quarter have been cordoned off while investigations continue. and in the last few minutes, according to local media reports, today's sugar bowl american football college game between notre dame and georgia has been cancelled. but we are awaiting

confirmation of that. in a moment, we'll cross live to the scene in new orleans, but first, this report from tom bateman. police raced to the scene just after 3am on new orleans�*s bourbon street, an historic tourist district packed with bars and music venues. the night had been filled with people out for new year's eve. officers say a man in a pick—up truck ploughed into a crowd, trying to run over as many people as he could. he then shot at police, who fired back and killed him. it did involve a man driving a pick—up truck down bourbon street at a very fast pace, and it was very intentional behaviour. this man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could. he was hell—bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did. we heard loud banging sounds coming out.

we're in our room just pretty muchjust closing down for the evening at the end of all of the events and everything, and when we looked out and when we looked out the window, we noticed there was a lot of bodies laying out on the ground. being a marine corps vet, it felt like back in iraq again, just shoved right in, everyone laying down, not knowing exactly what to do. dozens were wounded, including two police officers who were shot. they're all being treated in several of the city's hospitals. police evacuated a wide area, saying they were checking for possible explosive devices before carrying out controlled explosions. what it is right now is there are impovised explosive - devices that was found. and we're working on . confirming whether it is a viable device or not. police have released few details about the perpetrator other than saying he deliberately ran into the crowd before opening fire. the fbi says it is investigating the attack as an act

confirm how the subject came into possession of this vehicle. an isis leg was located on the trailer hitch of the vehicle, and the fbi is working to determine the subject possible potential associations and affiliations with a terrorist organisation. weapons and potential improvised explosive devices were located in the subject's vehicle. other potential ied these were also located in the french quarter. as of now, two ied have been found and rendered say. the fbi special agent bomb technicians as well as our local law enforcement partners have been working to determine if any of these devices are viable and they will work to render those devices say. the fbi, we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism. we are aggressively running down all of the leaves to identify the possible subject's associates. we are working to ensure that there is no further threat. we do not believe that shamsud dinjabbar
