wets local media reports the sugar bowl college football game has been postponed following the attack. that has been confirmed at a news conference in the last few minutes. hello, iam hello, i am annita mcveigh. the man suspected of carrying out an attack on new years revellers in new orleans did not carry out the attack alone, the fbi has said. a flag of the group, calling itself islamic state group, was found in the pick—up truck which the suspect drove into a crowd of people. the fbi has confirmed the suspect, named as 42—year—old shamsud dinjabbar, a us military veteran, was shot dead at the scene after exchanging fire with law enforcement. ten people have been killed after the truck hit crowds of new year revellers in the city.

at least 35 others were injured. local police say the driver tried to run over as many people as possible. two officers were wounded and being treated in hospital. they are in a stable condition. in these images shared by earthcam, you can see a group of police officers running toward the scene. this was around 3am, local time. and this picture from social media, checked by bbc verify, shows law enforcement, many heavily armed, surrounding a white pick—up truck in the aftermath of the incident. the fbi has taken over the investigation and confirmed that they're looking into this as an act of terrorism. the incident took place in the central french quarter of new orleans — a notable and busy nightlife spot — in the early hours of new year's day, local time. this was the scene in the last few hours. it's early afternoon there now. large parts of that french quarter have been cordoned off

uncovering oral details surrounding this tragedy. the governor of louisiana, jeff landry, gave more details about the additional security and preparations to the sugar bowl, which has been postponed for 2h hours following the attack. in preparation for the super bowl, i had intended to issue an emergency declaration tomorrow, so that we could bring all of our federal, state and local agencies to bear in preparation for the super bowl and mardi gras. but because of the events today, i have amended that emergency declaration and issued it today. so, again, that declaration will allow our federal, state and local partners to bring all of the resources necessary to get this city safe. in light of that executive

order, i have also ordered the mobilisation of a military police company. i've asked general to mobilize the military police company to assist both new orleans police and lsb and the fbi. just in case there is any confusion, we are talking about the sugar bowl that attracts many thousands of spectators. they were also talking about the super bowl because new orleans is due to host to the super bowl as well. we will go to washington in just a moment but let me bring you a statement that has just come into us from the last few seconds from the ukrainian president, zelensky, saying he is horrified by the attack in new orleans. he said that ukraine stands by the american

72 hours. also worth noting they said there are still victims of this attack on the street in bourbon street in the french quarter in new orleans. that means it is certainly possible that that death toll confirmed so far may go up. we also know some of those still in hospital are still in a critical condition. also there has been talk about whether there was security measures in place in new orleans in case of such a sort of terrorist attacks. the police were keen to point out they have measures in place to protect the area. this was a determined attack, the person drove up onto the pavement to get around those barriers. finally, ithink people need to understand that the sugar bowl, the american football game, is a massive event for new orleans and the united states. american

more now on the attack in new orleans. our reporter steve knibbs spoke to a witness. steve hyde, who was in new orleans to celebrate his 44th birthday a few days ago. i've been here many times. i'm told that what it was like last night is what it was like, or what it is like for mardi

gras. it's just a massive, massive party. everyone just so happy. it's just crazy numbers of people. the atmosphere was just amazing. the fireworks were beautiful. i was in a bar called the erin rose, which is just on conti street. um, which is about 15, 20 metres from bourbon. and, you know, we were all having a great time. i'd been in there for maybe 2.5 hours at that point. um, and then we heard shots and saw people running past the window. and didn't really know, you know, what was going on, obviously, you know, we heard the shots. we knew it wasn't going to be good. but we kind of thought, ok, it's a shooting, you know, someone has been shot.
8:12 pm
and obviously that was not the case. they shut her down the windows, locked the door, and we alljust sort of, i suppose, in a way trying to carry on because we didn't really know anything. so wejust... things were a lot quieter at that point. and then all the sirens started and, um, then we started to know it was more. bearing in mind fireworks had been going off, you know, all night. and, you know, you hear bangs and i mean, the fireworks have been going off for hours and hours, um, you know, before, before midnight. so the noise, you kind of grown accustomed to at that point. um, but we were all just talking to him. well, 0k.
8:13 pm
what's happened 7 what do we do? and, um, the barstaff were were great. um, they were all very calm. everyone in the bar was calm as well. um, i guess, you know, we didn't know. so i then went to sleep in a ok, still not really sure kind of what's happened. and then woke up this morning and then... yeah. and then, you know, just calling family and saying, don't worry, i'm. i'm 0k. um, just heartbroken. i love the city, and i love the people, you know, nowhere deserves this. and these people do not deserve this. michael wallace is a professor and programme director in emergency and security studies at tulane university — a private research institution in new orleans, louisiana. he's been telling us why there is this confusion about whether to characterise the incident as terrorism. law enforcement doesn't
8:14 pm
like to jump to conclusions. the first reports on everything are going to probably be wrong. so they're trying to figure out who this person is, why he did this. what clues did he leave? what social media did he have? you know, what was the flag that was on the back? that actually is a flag, you know. black does indicate islamic state or, you know, you have a lot of these things that could indicate something, but again, could not. so law enforcement is very hesitant about calling something either domestic terrorism or foreign terrorism. politicians, you see, will use the word terrorism a little bit more freely. but law enforcement, they usually want to get... they want to do their investigation before they make a decision like that. the fact that the fbi is the lead agency, again, indicates that this was probably a terrorist attack. to me, just because the fbi is the lead agency in the united states

for investigating terror acts. and, you know, again, from what i've seen so far and again, their preliminary reports, i would suspect this was a lone wolf—style attack. and, you know, from out of state and with a long gun. professor michael wallace. well, we had that update from other officials in the last hour. i spoke to a security expert and we discussed the key points from that news conference. it points from that news conference.— points from that news conference. , ., ., conference. it is informative and we have _ conference. it is informative and we have seen _ conference. it is informative and we have seen this - conference. it is informative l and we have seen this before. so the bureau is going to do their due diligence and find anybody he was connected to or speaking with, working with. a long wait ahead of them but i wasn't surprised by that information. saddened to hear it but i wasn't terribly surprised by it.- it but i wasn't terribly surprised by it. it but i wasn't terribly surrisedb it. ~ , surprised by it. when they say they don't _ surprised by it. when they say they don't believe _ surprised by it. when they say they don't believe the - surprised by it. when they say they don't believe the suspectj they don't believe the suspect was solely responsible, is that
