we are aggressively running down every lead. including running down every lead. those of his known associates. the fbi has confirmed officers shot and killed the suspect — who was an us military veteran. and, the local sugar bowl college football game has been postponed following the attack. postponed following the attack. we will have more from we will have more from new orleans in a moment, new orleans in a moment, but first one person has died but first one person has died tesla senior team and seven others have been and seven others have been injured after a tesla cybertruck exploded outside a hotel owned by donald trump. the person who died injured after a tesla cybertruck exploded outside a hotel owned by donald trump. the person who died was inside the vehicle, which was outside the hotel, clark county fire department officials and las vegas metropolitan police said. the cause of the fire is still currently unclear. in a post on the social media x, the ceo of tesla motors, was inside the vehicle, which was outside the hotel, clark county fire department officials and las vegas metropolitan police said. the cause of the fire is still currently unclear. in a post on the social media x, the ceo of tesla motors, elon musk, has said the whole elon musk, has said the whole

with law enforcement. ten people were killed after the truck hit crowds in the city. at least 35 others were injured. local police say the driver tried to run over as many people as possible. two officers were wounded and being treated in hospital. in these images shared by earthcam, you can see a group of police officers running toward the scene. and this picture from social media, checked by bbc verify, shows law enforcement, many heavily armed, surrounding a white pick—up truck in the aftermath of the incident. the fbi has taken over the investigation and confirmed that they're looking into this as an act of terrorism. we've also heard from our us partner cbs that fbi agents are working to identify individuals in a video which shows several people dragging explosive devices into place.
10:03 pm
the incident took place in the central *french quarter* of new orleans — a notable and busy nightlife spot — in the early hours of new year's day, local time. this was the scene in the last few hours — it's mid afternoon there now. large parts of that french quarter have been cordoned off while investigations continue. earlier — we heard more from the fbi about the suspect. the subject has been identified as 42—year—old shamsud dinjabbar, a us—born citizen from texas. he was driving a ford pick—up truck, which appears to be rented, and we are working to confirm how the subject became in possession of this vehicle. an isis flag was located on the trailer hitch of the vehicle, and the fbi is working to determine the subject's potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organisations. we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism. we are aggressively running down all the leads to identify the possible subject's associates.
10:04 pm
we're working to ensure that there is no further threat. we do not believe that jabbar was solely responsible. we are simply running down every lead, including those of his known associates. the mayor of new orleans latoya cantrell gave this update about what's happening in the city. my priority will continue to be to ensure that victims that remain on bourbon street now will be serviced and removed as soon as possible. but as stated, the fbi is in charge of this investigation and are doing everything necessary to make this happen. i have gone to the hospital, along with chief kirkpatrick, to visit our police officers and considering their injuries, they're doing well. as i mentioned, this investigation is ongoing and the fbi remains the lead
10:05 pm
in the investigation. it is an active crime scene as well. we are committed, no doubt, to uncovering all the details surrounding this tragedy. the governor of louisiana jeff landry gave more details about the additional security and preparations to the sugar bowl which has been postponed for 2h hours following the attack. a large college football game. in preparation for the super bowl, i had intended to issue an emergency declaration tomorrow, so that we could bring all of ourfederal, state and local agencies to bear in preparation for the super bowl and mardi gras. but because of the events today, i have amended that emergency declaration and issued it today. so, again, that declaration will allow ourfederal, state and local partners to bring all of the
10:06 pm
resources necessary to get this city safe. in light of that executive order, i have also ordered the mobilisation of a military police company. i've asked the general to mobilise the military police company to assist both new orleans police and lsb and the fbi. there has been political reaction from the white house. our north america correspondent rowan bridge has the latest. president biden has said he has spoken to the mayor and has offered all his support needed to the authorities in louisiana over this. i think there were some key things, though, that came out of that news conference that bear repeating. it's clear that the authorities now do not think that this was a single person behind this attack, and they are trying to track down all the known associates
10:07 pm
of shamsud dinjabbar, and anybody who has had contact with him over the last 72 hours. also worth noting that they said that there are still victims of this attack on the street in bourbon street, in the french quarter in new orleans, which means that i think it's certainly possible that that death toll of ten that have been confirmed so far may go up. we also know that some of those still in hospital are still in a critical condition also, as well, you know, there's been talk about whether there were security measures in place in new orleans in case of such a sort of terrorist attack. the police were keen to point out that they did have measures in place to protect the area. they had officers in the area, there were patrol cars there, but this was a determined attack that the person actually drove up onto the pavement to get around those barriers in order to drive into people. and then finally, as you say, i think people need to understand that the sugar bowl, this american football game between two university sides, is a massive event
10:08 pm
for new orleans and indeed for the united states. you know, american football, university football is a massive sport in this country. and so, for that event to be postponed, that is a significant event to be postponed in that way. but the nfl has said that it will take place, it's going to be 24 hours later and certainly tells us about but the nfl has said that it will take place, it's going to be 24 hours later. and certainly tells us about the concerns that the fbi, the lead agency investigating this, and other authorities have about what has happened in new orleans. and then president—elect trump earlier, he was talking in his statement, he called this an act of pure evil. and he said, "criminals coming in are far worse than criminals "we have in our country." but of course, since he's made that statement, we have learned that the suspect is a us—born texas resident and army veteran. yeah, that's right. i mean, those details were confirmed by the fbi in that news conference this afternoon. what is not clear is exactly
10:09 pm
what the motive is behind this. the police, or so the fbi say, they're treating it as a terrorist incident. and if you see in some of the pictures, you see what the fbi now believe is a so—called is flag on the bumper of that car, and they're working to find out if he had any links or associations with any known terrorist organisations. but this was an attack taking place, carried out by a us citizen on us territory. our news correspondent anna adams has more about the attack from the french quarter in new orleans. we are seeing more and more officers coming down from different areas of the state. we have got the state troopersjoining, officers from different parishes coming to assess. not only is this obviously a hugely fast moving investigation, that there were also absolutely incredible
10:10 pm
number of tourists ever. the city is at 90% capacity, the busiest i have ever seen it since mardi gras. the streets to sell, you know, very busy. we see more and more police come. we see the coroners vans leave the french quarter here behind me. just the context, we are at an intersection of canal street and bourbon. the truck came down here and drove into bourbon street there. we have seen the coroners van, they have been on site since, well, since the accident happened at 3am. they have only recently been able to remove the final bodies from the scene. it was an active crime scene and i think what happened was they were focusing their efforts on securing the rest of the city before they started moving the bodies. dead bodies have since been moved. the coroners are no longer here. they were slipping in and out. we have seen the investigation moved to other parts
10:11 pm
of the city. the st rock city is only a mile from here. and one of the houses believed to be an airbnb, officers are there now with bomb squads and dogs have gone on. we have been up there earlier but there is actually nothing at the moment to be reported from there. they are investigating the links that the suspect could have had with that house. you have been describing the location. many people may be familiar with it even if they have not been to new orleans. they will likely know this area is famous, a vibrant area known for its music, of course. jazz especially. so many people in the city, as well, for this big college football game, which is a huge event in the usa. what is the mood is there now? people will have been, you know, coming for a weekend, a week of celebration and, you know, all their plans potentially thrown into chaos with this horrific news. exactly. bourbon street is the most
10:12 pm
famous street in the city. it is known worldwide, it is party central. everything is outside here, bars are outside, the music is outside. yesterday there were parades outside, marching bands outside. the concert, fireworks were outside. all of that was concentrated within three or four blocks where this happened. just to give you an idea of how many people were out. all sorts of people go to the french quarter. i was there myself. it really is the centre of, notjust tourist new orleans, but of life here, this is where things happen, in the french quarter. police presence would have been relatively strong last night and also it is one of the main areas in the city that has a lot of security cameras. so the police are now trawling through all of the cameras there that have been exposed to that street. it is probably the most heavily surveilled street in the whole city.
10:13 pm
well, it is. today we are seeing more and more people come out because, i mean, they have to go to... they need to eat, get out of their hotel rooms. we are seeing more and more come down to canal street looking slightly bewildered. it is a weird juxtaposition that this has happened, last night, we are already seeing the restaurants filling up and musicians coming out and playing jazz. so there is a very strange atmosphere, yes, the show has to go on but also very, very sombre. and ofjust absolute surprise. because nobody expects... this is not a particularly safe city, it has to be said, but nobody ever expected anything to happen that would have anything to do with terrorism. there was a shooting here two weeks ago, right here, actually. that is what people are frightened about, but certainly nobody would have ever expected a terrorist attack to new orleans. so it is really a shock and surprise today. we saw a news conference
10:14 pm
a while ago, the governor of louisiana, issuing an emergency declaration to ensure that all resources are there to get their city. that they would be made available. at the news conference that was quite a lot of discussion about bollards in the area. bollards the suspect drove around. what more can you tell us about that? a lot of the reporters on that news conference were very interested to ask questions about that. absolutely. that is the question. i have spoken to some people who own restaurants, the business community here, and that is what they want to know here. why were the bollards not preventing this? there were two sets of bollards. i saw that one of them was up last night, actually. but it was further up in bourbon street. somehow somebody has been able
10:15 pm
to circumvent the bollards. that is the question that suddenly everyone wants to find out the answer to. that is what we are going to have to hear about relatively soon. to think that an area that is known for its street life, people piling into the street, wasn't protected on a night like new year's eve. and a night where we also, the sugar bowl, the college football game. now i think people will begin, the authorities, to get very, very nervous. we have the super bowl coming here and just over a month. after that we have got mardi gras, so all of these safety concerns are going to really, really feel a sense of anxiety people already had. keep up—to—date with all of the latest developments on the bbc news website and app. if we take a look there now you will see more information coming up with local media in new orleans reporting the names of some of the victims including 18—year—old, a 37—year—old and a 27—year—old among those who died. we are also learning a university of georgia student was critically injured
10:16 pm
according from a statement from the school's statement and to israeli citizens injured amongst the attack so keep up—to—date with every development on the website as well. an armed man has killed ten people including two children in montenegro. the attack happened in the western montenegrin city of cetinje. a statement said the man opened fire in a bar and fled the scene armed. police identified him only by his initials, am, and said he was 45—years—old. special troops have been dispatched to search for the attacker. israel's former defence minister yoav gallant is resigning as a member of the israeli parliament. mr gallant was fired as defence minister two months ago after major disagreements with prime minister benjamin netanyahu and the rest of the cabinet about the direction of the war in gaza but remained a member of the knesset. he said in his statement today that the government must prioritise the release
10:17 pm
of israeli hostages in gaza. the palestinian authority has suspended broadcasts by the qatari news network, aljazeera, in the occupied west bank. a ministerial committee decided to suspend aljazeera's operations over what they described as broadcasting "inciting material and reports that were deceiving and stirring strife" in the country. the authority has been angered by the network's coverage of clashes between palestinian security forces and other of clashes. more than 50 flood warnings are still in place tonight across england, wales and scotland after torrential rain hit many parts of the uk. greater manchester police declared a major incident after widespread flooding — with bolton, wigan and stockport among the worst affected areas. emergency workers had to free people trapped in their homes, and vehicles were left underwater. yunus mulla report.
10:18 pm
heavy rain and wind to bringing in the new year, and widespread flooding. in greater manchester, a major incident declared. meadow mill in stockport has more than 200 apartments. outside, vehicles were submerged in water. inside, residents like ell henderson, trapped without running water or power. we woke up, i think it was about 6:30am this morning, just a complete swimming pool outside. what should be the car park is now essentially the river mersey. that wasn't a nice thing to wake up to on the 1st ofjanuary, to be honest! when we got here the water was three _ when we got here the water was three or— when we got here the water was three or four feet deep and the cars were — three or four feet deep and the cars were submerged and that creates— cars were submerged and that creates a _ cars were submerged and that creates a number of challenges for us _ creates a number of challenges for us to— creates a number of challenges for us to work in those conditions. major roads have been flooded. this was the relief road to manchester airport. some had to be rescued. part of the m56 and the m60 were also closed. almost a month's worth of rain has fallen in parts of the north west in the last
10:19 pm
48 hours and support is being given to anyone here who needs emergency accommodation. river levels are running high. this was the river bain in leyburn, north yorkshire. in cheshire, homeowners were flooded despite defences being in place. there's absolutely nothing you can do. itjust comes in and comes through the floor and you just watch it and watch it. and it's just awful. across the region, motorists have had to abandon their vehicles. this wasn't the start to 2025 that many had hoped for. the figure is the second highest on record and an increase of 25% on the previous year. last year was also the
10:20 pm
deadliest on record with at least 77 people dying as they attempted the crossing. the boats have been getting bigger, with more and more people dangerously packed onto them. risking their lives in the world's busiest shipping lane with the goal of reaching the uk. this was christmas day, when more than a50 migrants made the crossing. to see that many people, they were sitting all around the edge, all down through the middle. they had their feet, some of them dragging in the water. um, so it was massively overloaded. and we actually stopped our engines and sort of sat in that position just watching that, just to make sure that nothing, you know, had sort of gone wrong. in 2024, a total of 36,816 people reached the uk on small boats. that represents an increase of 25% on 2023, though it's a fall of 20% on 2022.
10:21 pm
the mantra of the conservative government, "stopping the boats" has been replaced by the labour government with a promise to "smash the gangs organising the crossings." it's here at the home office that the daily figures for arrivals are pored over. labour says the previous conservative government left an appalling legacy of broken border security, allowing criminal gangs to take hold. the conservatives say that labour's decision to scrap the plan to send some asylum seekers to rwanda means there's effectively no deterrent. last year was the deadliest on record for crossings. the french authorities say more than 75 people lost their lives. at least three people died on sunday when their boat got into difficulty off the coast of northern france. what the government needs to do is not just try and smash the gangs through enforcement activity, it needs to continue to do that, but also critically put in place legal routes so that people fleeing the war in sudan, for example, or tyrannical rule in afghanistan, are able to come here safely without having to take dangerous crossings.
10:22 pm
the government says it's investing in its new border security command with the latest tech, and will stop at nothing to bring smugglers to justice. it won't put a timescale on when it expects to see results, but the crossings are likely to be a big political issue once again this year — even though the numbers making journeys this way across the channel are far smaller than the legal migration figures. we are taking you back to that story in las vegas where a cybertruck a tesla cybertruck was a scene on fire outside of the entrance to the trump hotel there. elon musk has just tweeted on x in the last few minutes and let's show you this post. he says "we have now confirmed that the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/ or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented cybertruck and is unrelated to the vehicle
10:23 pm
itself. he tweeted earlier is saying that "senior tesla executives were trying to work out what had happened". to recap... let us show you those pictures from the scene which we hope to bring up the next few seconds, really dramatic pictures of that tesla cybertruck on fire right outside of the entrance to the trump hotel in las vegas. president—elect trump's son eric trump and also tweeted earlier saying he had heard reports of a vehicle fire, sorry you're having difficulty with those pictures for you. elon musk now confirming the last few moments that this was caused by a very large firework or/ and a bomb carried in the

end of the rented cybertruck and you can see the images now, one person dead inside the vehicle and around seven others suffering minor injuries. the las vegas metropolitan police department confirmed this happened at around 8:40am local time. we will bring you more on those developments here on bbc news, stay with us here on the channel. hello. the new year didn't get off to the best of starts weather—wise. some parts of the uk had strong winds, heavy rain and flooding and with that rain clearing away, we've been ushering in some colder air. so frost and ice to start thursday morning, and then a day of sunny spells and some wintry showers. the satellite picture clearly shows the band of cloud that
10:25 pm
brought the heavy rain on new year's day, but then a clearance. those clear skies pushing down from the north. also a speckling of shower clouds and this cold air digging southwards. so a widespread frost and some ice to start thursday morning. could be some slippery surfaces for the journey back to work, many places through the day, though, will see lots of blue sky and sunshine, but some wintry showers running down this east coast. some for wales, northern ireland, the odd shower for south west england and frequent snow showers in the north of scotland. further accumulations of snow are possible here. windy up towards the north and the east. a cold day i think there will be parts of scotland and the north of england that may not get up of freezing all day long. and then through thursday night, another very cold one. but this band of rain, sleet and snow pushes southwards that could give rise to some slippery surfaces again on friday morning. widely, those temperatures
10:26 pm
well below freezing. so another cold start on friday, again we'll see some spells of sunshine, perhaps a bit more cloud in the mix this time. some showers for northern ireland, wales, north—west england, the midlands. some of these actually i think falling as rain, particularly at low levels. still a fair bit of snow in the showers across the north east of scotland where it will stay fairly windy. another cold day. and it stays cold into saturday. in fact, there could be some areas of low cloud mist and freezing fog, and if that fog lingers for a good part of the day, those temperatures really will struggle. some wintry showers up to the north. you can see confirmation of those low temperatures through the afternoon, but some wet weather pushing in from the south—west and this could cause some problems. low pressure swirling in from the south—west, some wet weather, some windy weather, but bumping into the cold air, some of us could see significant snow. uncertainty about the detail at this range, but some travel disruption is possible. it is worth staying in touch with the forecast. bye for now.
