just after 3am, chaos unfolds. the first signs of panic as police race to the scene. what they find, much of which is too graphic to show, is the immediate aftermath of a ramming attack. this is where the attack began. that white pick—up truck moving down this street towards the direction we are in, slowly at first, before getting to the junction here with bourbon street, this very famous thoroughfare in the historic part of new orleans. he took a right and accelerated quickly down the street behind that police truck there. as i was making my way back from the fireworks after ringing in the new year to bourbon street, i did notice that they had hydraulic bollards that are supposed to go up and block any car traffic from entering the area. unfortunately, they weren't engaged, they were down. i actually walked directly through it. last night, president biden said he was being briefed by the authorities.

the law enforcement and intelligence community are continuing to look for any connections, associations or co—conspirators. we have nothing additional to report at this time. dozens were wounded in this attack, including two police officers hit by gunfire. police evacuated a wide area and say they found a potential explosive device in the truck, and other possible devices outside it, before they carried out controlled explosions. the fbi says the attack is being investigated as an act of terrorism. an isis flag was located on the trailer hitch of the vehicle, and the fbi is working to identify the subject's potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organisations. weapons and potential improvised explosive devices, ieds, were located in the subject's vehicle. other potential ieds were also located in the french quarter.

we are starting to get tributes being paid by the loved ones, family, friends of those who were tragically killed in this incident. let's start with this man. he's 27 year old martin. he's a former football player at princeton university. he was hit, we understand, by the suspect*s truck. that's according to the athletic director at st thomas more catholic high school, where he actually played football before going on to play for princeton university. he graduated from princeton in 2021 and then worked as a trader at a brokerage firm. his death was actually confirmed in a statement by princeton university. they said there was no more appropriate nickname of a princeton player, according to his coach. he said he was a tiger in every way, a ferocious competitor and endless energy, a beloved team—mate and a caring friend. his brother paid tribute on x, alongside a news article saying, "love you always brother. rouge in louisiana. he was a store manager. his death was confirmed to cbs news by his cousin, sheryl robinsonjackson. his family told the media that after finishing work on new year's eve, he actually decided to head to bourbon street on a whim to celebrate the new year with a cousin. his cousin was injured also in the attack. he was described as full of life and apparently he messaged his familyjust minutes after midnight to wish them a happy new year. this is another of the victims, nicole perez. she was a 28—year—old mother and delicatessen manager from metairie in louisiana. she was celebrating the new year with herfriends. herfriend kimberly usher fall, who was a friend and boss at the deli store that she worked at, called her a dedicated, smart and good hearted person. she was described as beautiful and full of life. she was a mother to a four—year old boy, and apparently she used to bring her son into work on his days off from school. we're told by one of her colleagues that she used to teach him maths and the alphabet in the deli's storage.

she was described as a really wonderful person. then there was this woman. she was just 18 years old. she travelled to new orleans from nearby gulfport in mississippi with a cousin and a friend. she was described as an aspiring nurse. her mother confirmed her death on x. she said, "i lost my baby. "just pray for me and my family." she also posted this picture of her daughter with a red graduation cap and gown from this year, and her mother told local media that she'd actually been due to start her nurse training

hamas described the target as a tent camp in al—mawasi, which israel has designated a humanitarian zone. our middle east correspondent yolande knell has the latest. well, we're now hearing of two strikes that have taken place in this khan younis area of what's called the humanitarian zone. the first of them happened in the early hours of the morning, and you can see on social media pictures of tents ablaze and at least 11 people killed there. we heard from a hamas interior ministry statement, the director general of gaza police and his assistant were among those killed. and then we had a separate statement from the israeli military a short time ago, which just addresses one other individual they said was targeted, the head of internal security for hamas in gaza. and they accuse hamas of hiding among civilians in this area
2:19 pm
and also say that they took steps to avoid harming civilians. but the bbc has also spoken to the father of three boys who were killed in that strike, aged seven and ii and 13. their funeral took part took place a short time ago. and in this latest strike, the israeli military says that it's been targeting hamas fighters using a municipality building in the humanitarian zone, but local people are telling us that it was civilians who were sheltering in this area. and, as we mentioned in the introduction, a police chief among those killed. what more do we know about this police chief? yeah, that is very significant. his name is major general mahmoud saleh, and a glowing statement was put out about him and his police record by the hamas interior ministry, saying that he'd
2:20 pm
worked for 30 years in policing. and really accusing israel of spreading chaos in gaza by targeting police officers. we have seen over the past year that israel has killed a number of police in gaza. we know that it has said that it's going to destroy not just the the military capabilities of hamas in the strip, but it's also going after the governing capabilities of hamas as well. and the police are seen as being a part of that. south korean police investigating sunday's deadly plane crash say the chief executive of the airline involved, jeju air, has been banned from leaving the country. police have also raided muan airport, where the crash happened, and the offices ofjeju air in the capital seoul. reports say a warrant has been issued to the airline on charges of professional negligence resulting in death. 179 people were killed when the passengerjet crash—landed and slid into a wall, bursting into flames.
2:21 pm
investigators are looking at whether a bird strike or weather conditions may have contributed to the disaster. neelam mathews is an aerospace journalist in delhi and says a bird strike on the engine of the plane is unlikely to be enough to cause the crash. the investigations are still on, so we can't really say whether it was a technical or a manual error. but, however, just a bird strike is not enough to bring an engine down, because the 737 when it is tested on full load on one engine, so the engines are pretty sturdy. unless perhaps they turned the good so—called good engine by mistake. ora bird had hit the engine, which made them immediately want to land. so it was a bird strike, but how it led to the final problem. but when it landed, the problem is,
2:22 pm
as you said, it hit a wall. the wall was of concrete. it should not have been of concrete, because two tanks would have not brought the the wall down. it generally carries the aerials for the navigation equipment. and, the other airports like newark etc also have it. however, it was too, too strong and too sturdy a wall which broke the plane into pieces and the fuel caught fire. and we gather that they've started to extract data from one of the two black box flight recorders that have been retrieved from the scene of the crash, which may reveal more details about what did happen, including the pilot's final conversations and communications. oh, yeah, the pilots did recognise that there was a bird strike and, like i said, there have been about around 13,000 bird strikes last year, which didn't always
2:23 pm
lead to the problem. however, it could have been human factors, a mix of human factors. was it a turnaround flight? it was a red eye flight, which means it took off at 2.30am from bangkok. it caused fatigue and stress. the korean government issues were on. were the crew listening to news that they did not sleep enough. so, there's a lot of things that can happen in seconds. and the brain is a strange thing, it takes time to recover to the reality. let's take a look at some other stories around the world today. el salvador*s government says the country recorded only 114 homicides last year — a record low. president nayib bukele imposed a state of emergency almost three years ago, arresting tens of thousands of gang members and holding

them in newjails. the fall in violent crime has won mr bukele high approval ratings, but prompted criticism from rights groups who say some suspects have been arbitrarily detained. mr bukele said el salvador was now the safest nation in the western hemisphere. china's meteorological administration says last year was the hottest on record in the country, with temperatures more than one degree higher than average. the agency said the last four years had been four warmest since records began in 1961. on monday, the united nations said 2024 was set to be the hottest year worldwide. agnes keleti, the world's oldest surviving olympic gold medallist and a holocaust survivor, has died at the age of 103. the hungarian gymnastjoined the national team in 1939, but was barred from it a year

later because of her jewish background. keleti managed to escape deportation to a nazi death camp by exchanging all her belongings for false identity documents. as hungary's most successful gymnast, she won 10 olympic medals, all of them after reaching the age of 30 against much younger competitors, including five gold medals in helsinki in 1952 and melbourne in 1956. stay with us here on bbc news. hello. well, we didn't have to wait very long in the new year to see a sharp, cold snap of weather. and for many of us, that will bring plenty of blue skies and sunshine today. others will see a bit of snow, like here in aberdeenshire. either way, we've got these
2:26 pm
bitterly cold arctic winds spreading their way across the uk, bringing temperatures that are barely getting above freezing, most of us having dry weather and sunshine with a few showers draped around coastal areas. there will be a few more snow showers coming in across northern areas of scotland, and temperatures barely getting above freezing factor in that brisk north westerly wind. it feels bitter outside overnight tonight, probably some showers merging to give some longer spells of snow in inland parts of scotland. so a few more centimetres here around coastal areas of scotland. probably a bit more of a wintry mix. there'll probably be a bit of rain and sleet mixed in there as well. a widespread frost. lows temperatures down to about minus six and tomorrow lowest temperatures down to about minus six and tomorrow expect another day of blue skies and sunshine after a cold and frosty start for many. there will be further showers, though, again around coastal districts, some of these coming in as rain and sleet in towards some of our irish sea coasts. now heading into this weekend, we've got a cold and a frosty
2:27 pm
start to the day on saturday. then a shield of cloud is going to spread across england and wales, so it will feel very cold, with very little in the way of sunshine through the afternoon, just 2 or 3 c. a bit of brighter weather further north, but again some showers around and temperatures not getting much above freezing. it's heading through saturday night, sunday and into monday that some areas of the uk are looking at big trouble from this area of low pressure. the low pressure, though, will have a sharp dividing line in air mass to the north. it's cold enough to see snow down to sea level. to the south, any snow turns back to rain. you'd have to be up a mountain 2,500m high to see snowfall through the afternoon on sunday. we don't have any of those, so expect the weather to turn pretty wet. could be a bit of freezing rain bringing icy conditions across north wales for a time, but it's this zone where the snow becomes really slow moving and persistent that we need to really pay attention to because through sunday and into monday, some areas could see around 20 to 40cm of snow over the hills, drifting around in the strong winds that would likely cut off communities and bring some severe disruption. this boundary could change a
