-- famous preparing to reopen. —— famous bourbon street. studio: two laptops and three phones are recovered in the hunt for evidence, while bomb technicians find two improvised explosive devices hidden in coolers. investigators say there is "no definitive link" with the explosion of a tesla cybertruck outside the trump hotel in las vegas, but they are following "all potential leads". hello, and welcome to bbc news. in the last half hour, the fbi has been holding a news conference in louisiana, giving new details on the investigation into the new orleans terror attack in which 14 people were killed — along with the driver. shamsud—dinjabbar drove a hired pick—up truck along a street crowded with people celebrating new year. agents say they now believe
5:01 pm
jabbar acted alone. they say he published online videos in the build—up to the attack in which he said he was a member of the islamic state group. that briefing has just finished. the counterterror official from the fbi was giving a lot of new detail, so let's listen to that. first and foremost, let me be very clear about this point. this was an act of terrorism. he was premeditated and evil acts. this was obviously a critical incident and without lots of information and tips come pouring in from law enforcement, first responders and the public. we have been aggressively running down these tips and information. as you all know, that takes time and we will continue to do so until every lead has been followed through on. this investigation is only a little more than 2a
5:02 pm
hours years old, 2a hours old, so i ask you to keep in mind that as i go through some of the specifics later. but at this point, currently, and this is another fact i want to be clear on, we do not assess at this point that anyone else involved in this attack is involved in this attack is involved in this attack, except for shamsud—dinjabbar, the for shamsud—din jabbar, the suspect you for shamsud—dinjabbar, the suspect you have already been briefed on. a little bit about what the fbi is doing. we are surging people and assets to the area from across the region and across the nation, special agents in multiple field offices across the country have been deployed and are assisting with potential aspects of this investigation and following up on every lead. additional teams of special agents, professional staff and victims specialists continue to arrive to provide more investigative power and assistance to the victims and their families.

assistance to the victims and theirfamilies. we have also deployed a number of our critical incident response group assets, including members of our hostage rescue team, special agent bomb technicians and crisis management coordinators. in addition we have deployed more evidence response technicians to continue to process the various scenes that we have. so far, we have received just over 400 tips from the public, and that information is being followed up information is being followed up on both here in new orleans and across the country, some of the tips are here in new orleans and there are other tips in other states across the country that we are following up country that we are following up on. the fbi team and our law—enforcement partners here are also reviewing hundreds of hours of surveillance and other video from both the french quarter and other locations. * timeline, at this point,

investigators believe jabbar picked up the rented fi investigators believe jabbar picked up the rented f150 in houston, texas on december the 30th. he then drove from houston to new orleans on the evening of the 31st and he posted several videos to an online platform proclaiming his support for isys. there are five videos posted onjabbar*s facebook account which are time stamped beginning at 1:29am and the last at 3:02am. in the first video, jabbar explains he originally planned to harm his family and friends was concerned the news headlines would not focus on the, quote, war between the believers and the disbelievers. end quote. additionally, he stated he had joined isys before the summer. he also provided a will and testament. just some of that news conference, interesting, because very early on they said
5:05 pm
they would try and answer every question and hopes to be as transparent as possible, so the latest details of their investigations, lots of messages for all of those people who live in new orleans. let's go live to new orleans. 0ur correspondent carl nasman is in new orleans for us. the absolute top line of that discomfort obviously is that assessment that this man was working alone. yeah, that's right —— this news conference. as this city went to bed last night, that was a bit of an open question. we heard authorities sounding fairly confident that he did not act alone, there were questions there could've been other accomplices in this attack. it sounds as if, and coming from that press compass we just heard, that those assumptions were coming from video from the he looking at suspected expensive devices and people around them. as it turns out, we are hearing now from the fbi that those were good samaritans out there taking a look. there
5:06 pm
was a discarded item on the street and they wanted to know more about what that was. there were some coolers apparently fit with some expose of device. we also know that they believe they were planted by the suspect itself, so it suspects a bit of a broader plan of destruction along bourbon street, notjust the other end of this truck being driven through that crowd but other explosive devices stuffed we know there is also a firearm and explosives found within that truck, but certainly explosive ied is as they are calling them, two of them. there were other suspected devices, but having those along that street could point to something even larger here for we know that those two iuds, the ones that seem to pose the most risk, those were exploded yesterday —— ie dees. that really is the top line. that will have some people here today breathing a bit of a sigh of relief, knowing that the fbi at least believes there are not further accomplices out and about today. we know and you
5:07 pm
can see along the sidewalk here, scores of fans preparing for this big college football game taking place only a few miles away from the scene of this attack on new year's day, and there will be extra security in place, but still that may give people an extra sense that things are safe and at least that game and life can begin to return to some sort of normalcy. i begin to return to some sort of normalcy-— normalcy. i will come back to that point _ normalcy. i will come back to that point in _ normalcy. i will come back to that point in a _ normalcy. i will come back to that point in a moment - normalcy. i will come back to that point in a moment or. normalcy. i will come back to i that point in a moment or two, but they gave details about jabbar, saying he had joined isis, he had been 100% inspired isis, he had been 100% inspired i isis, and there was that very, very disturbing detail, they said he had posted a number of videos on route to new orleans, and said the initial videos had talked about attacking his family, but that he decided in his words that the news media would not focus on the war between believers and nonbelievers, so he changed tactic. so, they are very quickly learning a much fuller

picture about this man. these were some — picture about this man. these were some videos _ picture about this man. these were some videos that - picture about this man. these were some videos that were l picture about this man. these - were some videos that were even mentioned yesterday by president biden himself in one of his addresses, pointing to some videos posted online. we are now hitting more of those details, some five videos apparently, in the hours leading up to this attack which took place on new year's day. speaking apparently at some length about his intentions, his motivations, his thought process, striking to hear that some of this involved thoughts about his family. we know that he is divorced, does have children, he apparent talked about his desire to his family together and kill them. apparently, from these videos, he had decided against that and instead planned an attack in new orleans on innocent people here. so, this is all coming from videos apparently posted on his facebook page, and these are giving us a bit of a fuller picture of the man that committed these acts of the fbi
5:09 pm
says was responsible. looking into his background, there are some open documents out there, court documents, pointing towards a bit of a troubled recent past, divorces, some disagreements potentially with family members, with wives, some documents out there pointed to the fact he might have been in debt, had trouble making mortgage payments. we know that he was of course in the military for several years, was that we believe honorably discharged, and then at some point, with those videos, speaking about his allegiance to the islamic state group, had apparently decided to join that group. we don't know what that really means and whether this was something where he just acted alone, was self radicalised, as they say, by looking at videos online or whether there was any kind of contact with a terror group or anything like that. that is part of this investigation, but this is really now shaping up in those puzzle pieces beginning to give us a fuller picture of who this man was and exactly what motivated him to do this, and notjust those

social media and digital clues but physical clues. there was an isis flag found in that truck, so this really is a fairly clear now part of this narrative about how this took place and why of anti—islamic state group clearly playing a big role —— and the islamic state group playing a big role at least in the mind ofjob or himself. let's speak again to gene arthur coyle, professor at indiana university and a retired cia field officer. thank you for remaining with us. we talked before the news conference, you were listening throughout the 40 minutes or so. what did you make of what you heard?— you heard? severalthings struck me _ you heard? severalthings struck me as _ you heard? severalthings struck me as interesting. | you heard? severalthingsl struck me as interesting. it may— struck me as interesting. it may seem rather crass that the city of — may seem rather crass that the city of new orleans is worried about — city of new orleans is worried about getting bourbon street backed — about getting bourbon street backed up and opened, etc. restaurants and bars such as along — restaurants and bars such as along there, they may make ten,

5:16 pm
that street once it does reopen. we heard from the mayor about 2:30 p:m., about half an hour before kick—off, is when they are hoping to get the street up and open, and it is import for the city of this is a big annual game here in the many, many of the fans of these teams have been in new orleans, they are looking for to this game. i wasjust they are looking for to this game. i was just speaking to some of them recently, matthew, and they told me they thought it was the right thing to do postpone that game by about 24 hours and it is also something that you go ahead. speaking with them about security and concerns about whether or not they felt safe attending pretty much everyone said yes. there were a couple of deliberations, but we have not seen anyone leaving the city, no one took the opportunity to say, we should just go home. there is a sense, though, of morning and, this is not really life as normal here, but what they want to do is get back to what new orleans does best, have fun, party, be out in the streets, celebrate the new year and go to the game. in terms of what we heard there from the
