for parts of the uk. the met office says heavy snow over the weekend could affect travel. the most severe warnings cover northern england, the midlands and much of wales. i am nicky schiller in leeds. it is in one of those amber areas, heavy snow expected overnight, there could up to a0 cm across the pen names overnight. the prince and princess of wales say they are *shocked and saddened' by the death of edward pettifer — killed in the new orleans vehicle attack. he was the son of prince william's former nanny. and there's been a star—studded event at the white house — with bono, michaelj fox and hillary clinton among those honoured with the presidential medal of freedom.

hello, i'm catherine byaruhanga. the six—day state funeral of america's 39th president, jimmy carter has begun in his native georgia. he died last week at the age of one hundred. former and current secret service agents assigned to the carter protective division transported the former president's remains to the hearse. crowds lined the streets to pay their repects as the motorcade passed through mr carter's hometown of plains and on to his childhood home. and that's when his motorcade arrived in atlanta, where it was received at the carter centre with the "hail to the chief" hymn playing in the background. the casket will remain there until tuesday for the public to pay their respects. the body will then be flown to washington dc, where it will lie in state at the capitol rotunda. former presidentjimmy*s carter national funeral will be held at the national cathedral onjanuary nine.
10:02 pm
let's speak to our news correspondent carl nasman, who's at the carter centre in the city of atlanta. carl, in the city of atlanta. this was really unemotional carl, this was really unemotional service that we have seen the centre so far. fin have seen the centre so far. an emotional— have seen the centre so far. in emotional service, a moving day, the first day of the multi—day state funeral in honour of the 39th president, jimmy carter, this was the state of georgia's turn to come out and honour what all of its own we saw the casket of the former president retracing steps, going back through the remarkable life ofjimmy carter, beginning near his birthplace in the plan stronger — in plains georgia, and then making its way towards the heart of the state, atlanta, georgia, where we are standing, the carter centre, been a big part of his life in the last four decades or so, post presidency, but we got a chance

to see the carter family honouring their patriarch, jimmy carter, the former president, is that casket was letting. we heard from the family, and one worm — one remark that set out to me that shows you, even when you aren't related to a president, you're still blown away by the support we got. 0ne family or saying that the motorcade was a lots of love on the side of the road and we saw that love from georgians coming up to pay their respects tojimmy carter. the ration — the rest of the nation will get their chance, this is just day one of the multi—day ceremony here, after the body lies in reports on tuesday, the body would be flown to washington, dc on tuesday, be a national ceremony, laying in states in the capitol rotunda there, and then on november — january nine, we would see the ceremony in the national cathedral, we see past and future presidents,

what donald trump will be there, and we know thatjimmy carter before he passed away, we ask his friend and current ally, joe biden two deliver the eulogy. ally, joe biden two deliver the eulo: . * eulogy. and in the next few da 5 we eulogy. and in the next few days we will _ eulogy. and in the next few days we will look _ eulogy. and in the next few days we will look at - eulogy. and in the next few days we will look at his - days we will look at his national legacy, but right now in georgia, what are people saying, what is his legacy there in his native state? it has been amazing the number of people who have shown appear. we saw it big crowd gathering behind us in the memorial, taking shape, candles and flowers and peanuts been placed there, we spoke with people who came not only from georgia, we spoke to a man who drove 15 hours to be here from austin, texas and people came from panama, so quite the legacy he leaves here in georgia, before he was president he served in the state senate that they said
10:05 pm
he came to power for some and it was unexpected, and his inauguration speech he said the time for racial segregation is over, it really shook the south, we have never seen a southern governor said something that before, he had not telegraphed that he would be a civil rights resident our governor, but that is what he did, many african—americans in positions of power, and bringing them into his cabinet as president, so it is something georgians remember, it shaped the state for years to come and the country for us to come and the country for us to come and georgians have not forgotten that.— forgotten that. carl, thank you forgotten that. carl, thank you for bein: forgotten that. carl, thank you for being in — forgotten that. carl, thank you for being in us _ forgotten that. carl, thank you for being in us all— forgotten that. carl, thank you for being in us all that - forgotten that. carl, thank you for being in us all that has - for being in us all that has been happening — happening there in georgia over the last few hours. the met office has issued yellow and amber warnings across much of the uk — due to the risk of heavy snow and freezing rain on saturday night into sunday. we have already seen some of the effects of the winter weather — bristol airport has suspended operations, diverting flights to other airports in the area. national highways have also reported *a number of collisions* on the m5 motorway — although all lanes are now reported to be clear.
10:06 pm
these are the two amber warnings that are currently in place. the met office is predicting some areas could see up to a0 centimetres of snow and temperatures as low as minus ten celsius. sharon barbour has this report. the snow topped mountains of north wales, and now much of the uk is bracing itself for more snow and ice. the heaviest of the snow overnight is forecast for the lake district and parts of the north west. it will bring challenges for many, but for others there's an excitement. i'm going to go sledging. so, yeah. what about the freezing temperatures? uh, just put put another coat on. what's your preparation plan? get some gloves on and go out and snowball. i can't wait for it. it'sjust quite unusual for it
10:07 pm
to snow because usually i it's just quite cold - and just rainy, usually. so, quite excited. and there are also concerns about travelling on the trains. there have been delays already with scotrail, with transpennine services, and with northern rail, with operators warning that ice on the tracks could severely delay or stop services. the gritters have been heading out in all directions. drivers are being warned of potentially treacherous conditions and should be prepared if they get stuck. the passengers in these vehicles in the lake district were all rescued before it got dark, and here at the north yorkshire fire and rescue station, they've already responded to icy road accidents and are preparing for up to 100 call—outs overnight. if yourjourney is necessary and you are going to travel in the snow, then please take some sort of supplies with you, some food or drink,

a charged mobile phone. make sure your windows are clear and de—iced and misted. take a jacket and a blanket. torch — torches really, really important. a blanket and things like thatjust to keep warm in case you do get trapped. thanks very much. there are fears for those vulnerable with age uk saying the elderly should do everything they can to stay warm. reports of snow are now coming infrom hampshire, wiltshire, gloucestershire, wales, and here in yorkshire. sharon barbour reports in there. my colleague nicky schiller is in the city of leeds. where you are, in a of warnings for people who might be tempted or need to be out as snow falls in that part of the country. absolutely, i am in that part of the country. absolutely, iam in in that part of the country. absolutely, i am in the amber warning area that spreads up to

hexham in northumberland, across the carlisle in cumbria, around the scottish borders, a large area under this amber alert which is the second highest that the met office issues. we heard insurance report, already snow in the bristol area, the flights at bristol area, the flights at bristol airport have been suspended, which are police and telling people not to go out because roads are being shut, and the snow is moving up the country. ijust checked on the bbc weather app. here, we are expecting the snow to start in the next hour, and it would probably be happy us around 3am in the morning. the area that this amber alert covers also includes the pay nines, which is where we think the worst of the snow could be, up to a0 cm of snow could fall in those higher areas of the pay nines, but even lower down, he could be between 5—15 simm to meet — 5-15 be between 5—15 simm to meet — 5—15 cm, so elect of snow coming down overnight, so when people wake up on sunday
10:10 pm
morning and opening their doors, they may well find that there is a lot of snow in their areas. and that authorities here, we had the pitchers coming in the last hour, they have been written in the road, but the i — advice is on us a quote if you have to in the area that these two amber warnings are enforced, and the one here is in until midnight tomorrow, so it is notjust onto the morning that we need to be careful, it would be throughout the day on sunday that we have to keep an eye on the conditions, but as i said, authorities basically saying state inside and stay warm. stay warm, and what's our people there telling you about how they feel about these weather warnings? are they worried? how are they preparing? i worried? how are they preparing?— preparing? i think, particularly - preparing? i think, particularly in - preparing? ithink, particularly in this| preparing? i think, - particularly in this area, catherine, i mentioned earlier we had air runner going by in shorts earlier, and you can see from the traffic behind me,
10:11 pm
leads at the moment is operating it would on a saturday evening, but as i said, the gritters out our on most higher grounds, their use of the snow, there have been published snowed in for a few days, and the authorities know when to shut the roads to make sure that people cannot actually be on the roads when the snow comes down, so those higher areas of the pay nines are you stupid, there more if there's a lot of snow here in there's a lot of snow here in the city and the effect it will have on the city, because there is not always in a lot of snow here, that is what we have to watch overnight, and it really is a watching game at the moment, because wejust is a watching game at the moment, because we just do not know how much snow would fall in the middle of the night. and 'ust cive in the middle of the night. and just give us _ in the middle of the night. and just give us a _ in the middle of the night. and just give us a sense _ in the middle of the night. and just give us a sense of those preparations, and also we are hearing reports of disruptions and still airport, but also some of the motorways as well. hash — bristol airport. absolutely, i mentioned bristol
10:12 pm
airport, the m5, there've also been disruptions elsewhere, also which are police tweeting and posting on social media not to go out unless yourjourney is absolutely necessary. we know there's been snow in nottingham, not in him is in the other amber area where there is that warning of frozen rain, because this could be a problem in the morning in those areas where the rain has fallen with a freeze and it will turn the roads into an ice skating rink and the problem is you do not always see that ice on the road when you are driving along, so that could be a problem in those areas, but we are getting this picture building up that the snow, as the forecasters suggest, starting down in the west and moving further up north into the country, but the warning, the country, but the warning, the biggerwarning, is the country, but the warning, the bigger warning, is here in this area of england, west yorkshire, north yorkshire, northumbria and cumberland, so
10:13 pm
it really is this area that we are watching in the morning just to see how much snow has fallen. . , my just to see how much snow has fallen. . , .' ,, fallen. that is nicky shiller in the needs _ fallen. that is nicky shiller in the needs for _ fallen. that is nicky shiller in the needs for us - fallen. that is nicky shiller in the needs for us in - fallen. that is nicky shiller in the needs for us in the l in the needs for us in the north of england. anyone travelling around the uk is facing a range of problems on the roads, the railways and by air. simon calder, the travel correspondent for the independent, provided an update on potential disruptions to air travel in the coming days. if we can start at the airports, we have had 20 cancellations in and out of london, heathrow — the uk's busiest airport — so far today, and all of them short—haul flights on british airways to destinations like barcelona and rome as well as short—haul domestic flights to newcastle, edinburgh and glasgow. the reason that happens is the so—called flow rate of arrivals coming into heathrow has to slow down. it is the busiest two—runway airport in the world and it relies, in order to fly the published schedule, on being very busy at all times.
10:14 pm
but because of the forecast adverse weather, they will take some flights out and it is pretty much always british airways, given that it has the majority of flights there, that takes the hit. they are all on routes where people should be booked on other flights. london, very much out of the really serious amber warning area, manchester airportjust on the edge, leeds and bradford quite clearly in that. but at the moment, the airports seem to be functioning well. we have some delays in belfast international, in birmingham, and in aberdeen, but they appear not to be related to the severe weather. a reminder before we go — as new yellow and amber warnings for snow and ice come into force across much of england and all of wales — you can continue to follow the latest developments on the bbc news app

10:16 pm
he liked that because he was able to boss me around every day. but i actually was able during that time to become friends with my parents, something i never expected. to be able to sit down and talk to them like human beings instead of the boss. it was an amazing thiing for me, and something i will always cherish. that was james carter. speaking at the service at the carter centre in atlanta — jason carter, the grandson ofjimmy carter, paid tribute to his grandfather's legacy and thanked those who had helped make it possible. all of us have been thinking about this day and planning for it for a long time, but it is obviously still hard for all of us. for us, my family, and i am sure, i can see on yourfaces for many of you, i appreciate that, butjust know that while we mourn my grandfather's passing, i know in my heart, and you all do, that his legacy will live on. not only because of the millions of people that he touched across the globe, but very

10:18 pm
and i was standing in the kitchen and i looked up and he was carrying one of my chairs out the back door, and i said, "what are you doing?" he said, "no, it's broken. "i'll bring it back tomorrow." so the next morning, about 7.30 am, he comes through my back door, put the chair back where it belonged, walked out. so he was a former leader of the free world and my handyman. handyman and a lovely friend. and i believe that the population or residents of plains is around 500 people. so this is quite a small town where i'm sure everyone knows each other. what did it mean for plains to have such a towering figure as a son of the town? so it meant everything to plains. thejimmy carter national historical park, where i am sitting today. we're in the high school where both president and mrs carter attended grades one through 11. there wasn't a 12th grade

curriculum written then, but the carters were the main presence in town. it wasn't uncommon to see them walking down the street, riding their bikes down the street, walking into the local stores. he taught sunday school here for a number of decades, and he was a normal fixture. and it's going to be very difficult for the residents of plains to get used to a world that doesn't include presidentjimmy carter. yes, and i was reading that, you know, as he grew older, some people had come to expect that this day would come when he would pass away, and that some of the memorabilia was actually madejust a few months ago. were you preparing for his death and others there in plains? well, actually, a president's death is prepared for since they were elected, so that was nearly 50 years ago.
10:20 pm
so there have been a lot of preparations. president carter has been in hospice for 22 months. so we have been preparing for a very long time. andjill, i understand that you will be at the funeral service that will be held there in plains on thursday. what are your thoughts as you watch the next few days, next few days of ceremonies happening there in georgia, but also in washington, dc? what's going through your mind at the moment? so an end of an era. um, again, like i mentioned, i don't know how we're going to get used to a world without president carter — of him calling our cell phones or him dropping by the house to have a glass of wine, or to just chat about, usually a project to help somebody, because that's what he and rosalynn were fixated on, how to help others. and they were like that in until the day they passed.
