hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm gavin ramjaun. newcastle strike first in the english league cup. they stun arsenal at the emirates with isak again on the scoresheet. a new era begins — former rivals andy murray and novak djokovic take to the australian open, with murray in his new role as coach. and we'll hear from great britain's victorious four—man bobsleigh team following their world cup win at the weekend. hello there and welcome along to the programme.

and it appears that newcastle have arsenal's number this season. they've beaten them in the league this season and now have the advantage going into the second leg of the carabao cup semi—final. eddie howe*s side came away with a solid 2—0 win at the emirates, in a frustrating match for the gunners. alexander isak made the most of his opportunity to put the away side ahead in the first half. that's 8 games in a row, he's scored, in all competitions. anthony gordon capitalised on some good build—up work with a tap in for the second. arsenal failed to convert their chances, gabriel martinelli and kai havertz going close — but they couldn't find the breakthrough. arsenal now with a job on their hands to get back into this, with the return leg at st james*s park early next month. and a boost for tottenham ahead of their league cup semi—final first leg with liverpool on wednesday. spurs manager ange postecoglu has welcomed the news that captain heung—min son has extended his stay at the club. the 32—year—old joined spurs from bayer leverkusen nearly

10 years ago and they've triggered a one—year extension on his deal meaning son will stay until at least 2026. he's already had an outstanding career at this football club. you know, he's been, you know, he's played a big role in the last ten years. made an impact at the club, made an impact on the premier league. great to extend his stay and the kind of aim and and ambition is to make sure he finishes his spurs career with some silverware. the sides met last month, with liverpool hitting six goals past their opponents in the premier league. spurs though did show some fight, scoring three of their own, and the liverpool head coach arne slot is aware what they're capable of. large parts of the away game we could show our identity, but definitely parts of the game where they showed how good of a team they are, scoring three goals against us is, um, is also an accomplishment.
3:48 am
i know we scored six in that game as well, but scoring three against us is — not what many teams have done until now. wolves forward matheus cunha has had his ban reduced after offering to buy a member of the ipswich security team new glasses, following a melee on the pitch after their late defeat at molyneux, when the sides met last month. the striker will miss just two games, rather than three — and given an £80,000 fine after the fa found him guilty of misconduct for the altercation where he snatched the glasses off the face of a security guard. an independent panel said the initial ban was a starting point, but agreed cunha's acceptance of the charge, his apology and clean disciplinary record were also mitigating factors. chelsea have triggered the option to extend winger guro reiten*s contract until 2026. reiten has made 177 appearances for chelsea sincejoining in 2019, winning five wsl titles and three fa cups. the norwegian international is also the top scorer for sonia bompastor*s side

in the wsl this season, with the blues sitting six points clear at the top of the table. novak djokovic and his new coach, andy murray, have practised in melbourne for the first time. djokovic is hoping murray can help him win a record—extending 11th australian open title this month at the age of 37. the serbian took the tennis world by surprise when he announced murray was to join his team. britain's three—time grand slam winner retired in august, and this is his first coaching role. 0ns jabeur continued her return from injury problems by beating fourth seed danielle collins at the adelaide international. the tunisian was a wildcard for the event ahead of the first grand slam of the year, the australian open which begins on sunday. she had a shoulder injury at the end of last year, but looked in good form as she got past collins 7—6, 6—2 to move into the last 16. it was a great weekend for great britain's four man bobsleigh team. pilot brad hall, taylor lawrence, arran gulliver and greg cacket won gold by pipping germany byjust

under two—tenths of a second across their two runs. it denied germany a home victory in winterberg for the first time in 13 years. the triumphant team have told 0lly foster the success is down to years of hard work. it's been building up to this, i think, over the last few years. we have won so many silver medals on this track. we were pretty gutted to miss out on the world championships last year, and we finished with sixth place after a lot of injuries. i had back injury, greg was out with a major hamstring tear and other injuries for arran as well. to come back and get first place is a massive success for us, and to do it in the germans* back yard is another thing as well. couldn't be happier with that. how did it feel for you guys? starting with you, greg? we've been working for this for so many years. since our debut in 2018, pyeongchang, to get to where we are now is extraordinary. like brad said, the germans* back yard, the third time we've done that.
3:51 am
winter berg, it's never been done. we have won tons of silver medals there. to finally get the gold over the line was really special. was your view towards the end? we needed to give him a good push _ this is arran's first race this season i in the four—man, to have him on the sled added i the extra fire power. and brad drove an absolute storm we can improve on the push. and arran? it's nice to be back. we had such a successful season, the 2022—23 season. we picked up world championships silver medal. we have been struggling with injuries since then, really.
3:52 am
myself, personally i've been out for 18 months, really, since that season, really. so it's nice to be back pushing with the boys racing and again, getting the highs and a gold medal. pushing now towards san moritz. you won that silver two years ago. hopefully we can replicate some of the success we had in the world championships a couple of years ago. it's going to be quite an important track for us. we got three four—man races. it's pretty important for the overall world cup rankings. we need to make sure we get this weekend right, set us up for the next few weeks. the england and wales cricket board has met with british mp tonia antoniazzi after she wrote a letter, signed by 200 politicians across a range of parties, calling for them to boycott the england men's

champions trophy match with afghanistan next month. they want the team to refuse to play the 50—over match and take a stand against the taliban regime, which has effectively banned women's participation in sport since 2021. many of afghanistan's female players have left the country for their own safety. the labour mp earlier called the ecb's position "spineless, slippery and morally wrong". i was just really cross with their response, the one they gave to me was the one that we want out to the media. i felt it was non—committal, it didn't show any kind of backbone. i do stand by what i said earlier. i also understand the context in which he's dealing with it. i still think they should be seriously considering a boycott. i made my views clear to him and then he — they made their views very clear about what the consequences of doing such a thing would be. this competition hasn't been around for the last eight years. it happens to be a very big deal for people in pakistan, the pakistani government. i understand the geopolitics of it. there's a wider and bigger issue around women and girls
3:54 am
in sport and some afghanistan. and in afghanistan. if our women cricket players from afghanistan are now living in exile, and most of the men's team are, surely there's something wrong there. staying with cricket, sir clive lloyd, the former west indies captain, says he's very disturbed by reports of a new two—tier system for international test matches. it's been suggested the heads of cricket in australia and england will meet with the icc to discuss splitting the test playing nations into two divisions, enabling the big three to play each other more often. if west indies were placed in a second division of nations, lloyd fears for the future. i think it will be terrible for all those countries who worked so hard to get to test match status. and now they're playing among themselves in a lower section. how will they make it to the top? how will they — when
3:55 am
you play against better teams, you improve. that's how you know how good you are. how bad you are. so i think that — i'm very disturbed about this. and i hope that something, you know, is done, it must be, you know, stopped now. the way to go is to give them the same amount of money so they can improve their facilities, get better systems in place, so they can improve their cricket. it's just about from us. you can get more on the app. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website — that's bbc.com/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye.
