inquiry into grooming gangs. welcome to bbc news. firefighters in california are battling three different places in and around los angeles, including a ferocious one that has ripped through an affluent neighbourhood. more than 1,400 firefighters have been deployed to battle the fires with hundreds more on their way. the california governor has said one firefighter has reported to be injured. the area near santa monica has seen at least 30,000 people forced from their homes. you can see that in some areas, it has almost reached the coast. it currently covers

almost 12 square, bitters and stretches from mountainous areas to the beach city of santa monica. these are live pictures from the scene where we have seen burning cars and destroyed buildings. two more fires are reported to be spreading in other parts of los angeles as strong winds spread the flames. one in eton canyon in pasadena. a third one is reported from the silma near the los angeles national forest. firefighters in california are battling three different the white house says the president is being briefed on the situation.

can destroy a neighbourhood. we are on the corner and when we first got here about 35 minutes ago, this home was completed destroyed. now you can see across here, there is another home that has caught fire. black smoke is billowing from the top of it so we know that is a structure burning and those are homes right here. the wind is blowing in all directions. right now you see the embers going to the south of us but it is also blowing to the west and the east. we also have this complex that caught fire because embers from the home behind us were blowing in the wind across the street here and now there are at least two of these buildings here that are on fire. it is so heartbreaking, we are seeing firefighters in these neighbourhoods but they cannot relate to anything because the wind is basically laying these flames down on top of homes ago blow to and a host will not really do anything for that. they are trying to focus on other efforts on protecting the

homes are little bit further away from the flames where they know that they actually can put in the richer protect them and we are also seeing firefighters that go into this complex here and just making sure that no one is still inside the properties here. you have to hope that everybody heard about these evacuation orders and cut out a long time ago because at this point in the evening, the flames are only picking up in intensity. we have seen not only the city helping people but other people coming out here to help their neighbours. i spoke to one gentleman who said he busted out the window and his friends apartment complex to make sure he could get her out and he said she did not know that the fire was burning right behind it. look at the flames coming of this condo right here. i'm sure there are others who did not know the fire was this close to them until they heard the fire alarm next door and came outside and saw this.-

rescue workers in tibet are working round the clock to search for survivors after a major earthquake killed at least 126 people. the magnitude 7.1 quake struck at around 9am local time on tuesday. the impact was felt across the xi—gat—say region of tibet, although tremors were also felt in nepal and parts of india. a large—scale rescue operation has been launched, with survivors under additional pressure as temperatures as low as minus 16 degrees celcius overnight. chinese state media reported that around 3000 buildings had been destroyed — leaving thousands of people without shelter.
