let's get back to those wildfires in and around los angeles. they break there, it has been such a battle for all of those fire crews through the course of the night. they were saying the strongest intensity of the fire was just before dawn and there you see some of the live picture still coming in. you get a real sense of that. four majorfires in. you get a real sense of that. four major fires they are battling with, ia00 firefighters in place. let's go from those pictures to some extraordinary pictures we have heard in the last few minutes because this video was taken by a passenger on board a flight that had been re—routed to los angeles international airport yesterday. you can see the thick dark clouds of smoke. there is an eerie orange glow of the fires raging below. tens of the fires raging below. tens of thousands of people have been told to flee their homes. we have been about those details and the areas that have
3:37 pm
been evacuated, certainly the governor were saying those evacuation orders are in place but not everybody has heeded them. we have heard of injuries on the ground but also huge numbers of properties that have been destroyed so far. the alarming thing for firefighters is so far, they are not able to contain any of these four major blazes. let's speak to marika erdely, who has fled her home and is staying with her daughters in santa monica. thank you so much for being on the programme. give me an idea of what you have been through in the last 2a hours. of what you have been through in the last 24 hours.— in the last 24 hours. hello, bbc. in the last 24 hours. hello, bbc- really _ in the last 24 hours. hello, bbc. really scary. - in the last 24 hours. hello, bbc. really scary. started | bbc. really scary. started yesterday at 1015, i was going to head out for a meeting, a business meeting. i looked outside and that orange glow you were talking about was all
3:38 pm
across the ocean. it was frightening, i looked out with my cousin visiting from budapest, we saw the view. i live above the museum in la, between pacific palisades and malibu. it is a development on a plateau of about 500 homes. you can see everything from up there. the orange glow, what is going on? looks to the left and there is this giant storm of plume of smoke. it was obviously right there in the palisades. very scary. we were looking there and my daughter called to say her daughter, a two—year—old, needed to be picked up at the preschool. i went to pick her up because she was on sunset. got her home and then the evacuation orders came
3:39 pm
in and we piled the car up. i got my dog, my cousin, the baby and some valuables into the car and some valuables into the car and drove to santa monica. you lived in california _ and drove to santa monica. you lived in california so _ and drove to santa monica. you lived in california so used to wildfires. give me an idea of how different this one is. we have been listening to details of people like you who have evacuated will certainly have had to leave their cars because the fires were moving so quickly. the fires were moving so cuickl . , * ., ., ., quickly. yes. i'm a native of los angeles, _ quickly. yes. i'm a native of los angeles, i _ quickly. yes. i'm a native of los angeles, i have - quickly. yes. i'm a native of los angeles, i have lived i quickly. yes. i'm a native of. los angeles, i have lived here all my life. these wins and the wins that have been happening over and over the last couple of years have been much stronger, and the wind is the strongest it has ever been last night. they were picking up. i know the whole area, the palisades, where the car was stopped. it is scary, it is one access to their homes. it is gorgeous to hike there. i know
3:40 pm
that area very well. everybody had to abandon their cars and thatis had to abandon their cars and that is scary. the thing to note is this is a climate driven catastrophe that is happening here because of these extreme winds and the fact that our government and the world isn't paying attention to base right now, and we don't have mandates to help fix this problem and starts making a difference for our kids is just so upsetting and frustrating, i am in the business of sustainability and the fact that i see what is happening with the legislation and we are not focused on it. i don't really know, what are we waiting for? we have 30,000 people having to flee their homes and people had nothing getting toothbrushes yesterday. everyone around me had evacuated. what are we waiting for? why isn't our government and society really focused on this climate change? it is a

3:42 pm
you mentioned going on. the winds themselves strong winds out of the north—east offshore winds with wind gusts of 50—70 mph. we had gusts of up to 100 mph. we had gusts of up to 100 mph. that is like dealing with the wind in a hurricane and with this fast moving inferno, it has been that combination that has led to a lot of the property destruction. some of the guests, 100 mph, malibu hills, 98, fremont canyon, 83. the winds in areas like pacific palisades and malibu, this is a one in ten year event. they have been driven by a couple of factors conspiring together. we have an area of high pressure over nevada, that produces the santa ana winds in california. the big difference is we have
3:43 pm
an area of strong low pressure crossing through portions of southern california with a lot of wind energy and that is adding extra momentum and adding extra momentum and adding extra momentum and adding extra amplification to this whole setup. the challenges those strong winds are going to continue today, you look at them and the accu you look at them and
