lives on the line... well, more pre—care of that news conference. let's read what we have been watching. a variety of lead officials updating us, the important first update is that we can see it on the screen, two civilian fatalities have been reported in the eton fire, of those are four major fires that are taking place. the chief as saying there had been a high number of significant injuries to people who did not evacuate and that eton fire continues to grow with, as he described it, zero containment. in terms of the other officials, they reported no fatalities in the palisades fire. in terms of the area they are dealing with, it

is 5000 acres destroyed, a thousand structures also destroyed. one of the fire chiefs saying the fires were a widespread disaster and the la city fire chief saying fires are stretching emergency services capacity to their limits. the police chief who spoke their saying there were some heroic stories with officers getting people out just moments before buildings collapsed. the fire chief saying, we are absolutely not out of danger yet, 10% of schools also have closed. we heard that from the la police chief that fire conditions, they were unprecedented and also unpredictable with wind speeds. he said he had never seen anything like it of 75 mph. that is what they are dealing with. we will return for some of the questions in a moment or two. we willjust

come away from that because that feed is breaking up a little bit. i want to also show you some extraordinary pictures that have come into was which gives you another glimpse of what we are dealing here. this is video taken by a passenger on board a flight that had been re—routed to los angeles international airport yesterday. that gives you a glimpse with the orange glows of the fires. an enormous area of the fires. an enormous area of fires and as was quite clear in that a news conference, so far those four fires they are battling with, zero containment in any of those fire. that is really worrying for the officers on the ground. as you heard, evacuations order in place and they are urging people to actually heed that, listen to that and leave the danger areas. listen to that and leave the dangerareas. let's listen to that and leave the danger areas. let's return to reporting on the ground. the cbs correspondent sent this

update from malibu where firefighters are working there throughout the night to try to get things under control. we moved west a mile or two and it is significantly worse in this area. smoke is a lot thicker, a lot darker. you see so many embers, and integers shooting down this way and it is because of this, more structures on fire. we are talking big buildings, a lot of them burned to the ground. we are seeing, again, that wind started to pick up on and off. the flame colour is telling the story of how much this is burning. orange flames, we see blue flames which are very, very hot. obviously, we see firefighters on the defensive. you are going to see boots on the ground. they are doing the best they can to prevent the

fire from spreading to the nearby structure. we have hoses shooting water on top of the buildings, from the roof and also on the ground, on the side of that building. the building to the left is completely burned to the ground. just about the foundation is what is left. we have been seeing them working on this building for quite some time now. just some of those hours through the night when they were really battling the height of the blazes. let me show you when dawn came what it looked like. incredible pictures. the early moments of sunrise. you can see the orange glow. it is a huge amount, the acreage they are dealing with, just a palisades fire is 5000 acres destroyed so far. thousand structures. as they were just describing in so many of those

areas it is making swift progress with the wind speeds also whipping up, it is moving the fires so quickly. people are leaving their homes and everything at such a rash. jp morganjust everything at such a rash. jp morgan just putting out something that the preliminary estimates indicate that insurance losses from these wildfires could approach $10 billion. that is high but manageable. that gives you on the financial side of things, a glimpse of the magnitude of what they are dealing with. as i was saying from the news conference, two civilian fatalities in the eton fire and those officials are saying none of those fires are under control, or remotely under control. repeating again and again, the evacuation orders which have expanded to 32,500 people, they must be listened
