winter so far. these were some of the temperatures. it will be colder again for many of us tonight, and temperatures already at out the hara are —15 celsius. it will be a milder night for northern ireland and western coasts in general. and that is the next headline of the next few days — milder air is coming our way, marked in yellow. it will turn milder across northern ireland and in scotland. it will be next week when we see them while they are filtering through to the south and east. lots of flood warning still in place this weekend and there could be problems with additional snowmelts. there will be patches of freezing fog around as well, particularly across parts of southern england and wales. that will develop overnight tonight. you can see that it turns cloudier, windier, patchy rain and perhaps a little hill start for northern ireland and eventually western scotland. temperatures of overnight will be well below freezing. ——

temperatures overnight. tomorrow morning, temperatures won't get much past freezing. cloudier, windier, patchy rain moving into western scotland as we head through tomorrow afternoon, and more of the same again, a little milder again out towards northern ireland and for south—west england as head to sunday too. on sunday, a little patchy freezing fog around. that clears. cloudier, windier and mild the further north and west you are. that's it from us and bbc news. time now to catch up with the news where you are. have a good weekend. goodbye. hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm jane dougall. strong words from the ecb, demanding the international cricket council take action ahead of england's match against afghanistan.

they call for funding to be witheld and the women's team re—instated. round and round we go, david moyes closes in on a return to everton. whilst graham potter takes charge of west ham tonight, in a managerial merry—go round. and no ronnie at the palace: o'sullivan won't defend his masters crown, as he withdraws from the tournament. we speak to four time champion mark selby about his absence. also coming up on sportsday. novak djokovic says his relationship with new coach andy murray has started well — and their partnership's been compared to two other greats in a different sport. it's great, to become the coach, welcome to the programme. sport has often been used as a political tool, particularly in cricket, and after calls for england

to boycott their match against afghanistan, because of the taliban regime's assault on women's rights — the ecb have sent a powerful letter to the international cricket council — seen by the bbc. in it they call on the world governing body to "withhold a meaningful proportion of icc funding from the afghanistan cricket board. and to "place an immediate condition on the membership status of the afghanistan cricket board to deliver women 5 cricket by a certain deadline." the ecb's chief executive richard gould and chair richard thompson signed off the letter saying: "what is taking place in afghanistan is the worst violation of women s rights anywhere on earth. if we do not take the actions that are within our power to take. "we are all complicit." despite the growing pressure, the culture minister lisa nandy has said england should not boycott the champions trophy match in february. ido i do think it should go ahead, i am
6:35 pm
very cautious about boycotts and sports. partly because i think they are counterproductive and they think they deny sports fans the opportunities that they love and can also very much penalise the athletes and sports people who work very hard and sports people who work very hard and are denied the opportunities to compete. they're not the people that we want to penalise for the appalling actions of the taliban and against women and girls and i do think in these cases that there is a case for saying not only do you use these events as opportunities to raise the human rights situation but also, as in the case of china for example a few years ago when they hosted the winter olympics, we should not be rolling up the red carpeted these events. i am not at all relaxed about the situation in afghanistan and i have worked very closely with the women and girls in afghanistan and i was a part of the inquiry into what is still happening and as a government, which read that with the utmost seriousness and the question is what other ways but we

make progress of those women and girls, diplomacy is the key channel of public pressure is a part to play. i am very pleased that my colleague has put together this letter to raise awareness about what is happening. she doesn't call in the uk government to call for a boycott but i think it is read that we should allow sport to be sport but i also think we should use these moments to highlight the plight of women and girls. well, it's notjust england who are being compelled to boycott their match against afghanistan. there has been growing pressure for them to be excluded from the champions trophy — under the international cricket council regulations — full membership is conditional upon having women's cricket teams and pathway structures in place, which afghanistan obviously do not have. the world cricket governing body, the icc, have given this response: we are committed to leveraging our influence constructively to support the afghanistan cricket board in fostering cricket development and ensuring playing opportunities for both men and women in afghanistan.
6:37 pm
the icc has established an afghanistan cricket task force, chaired by deputy chairman mr. imran khwaja, who will lead the ongoing dialogue on this matter." meanwhile, there's been no reaction from england women as yet — they're in australia for the ashes which begins late on saturday night — uk time. england haven't lifted the trophy since 2014, but they came close in 2023, winning the one day international and the t20 series, just not the test match. captain heather knight says they have to channel that form again. how we played in 2023 is the blueprint around how to play against australia and he think gap to stand up australia and he think gap to stand up and plato to tell them play quite aggressive cricket and soak up the pressure that they're going to put on you and their guides or punches back at you. that is what we did for the series in 2023 and we had a lot of success against this australian side it's very important because quite often, it feels like you go to

the generals house the other day and she was talking about us in the speech because they are very proud and very patriotic and they love their cricket never feels like and want to be a bit hostile to the england cricket team and it's a good banter and yes, it is certainly something that you do get over here something that you do get over here something sting really tight as a group, or look after each other and making sure that we care about is what is going on in that circle and i would go on about things and it's a tough place to come but really exciting. now they say never go back, but it looks as though that's precisely what david moyes is going to do. he's in talks with everton over a potential return to goodison park after the club sacked sean dyche. moyes was manager of everton from 2002 to 2013 before leaving to take charge of manchester united. while a deal is not yet done,

and moyes is not the only candidate, bbc sport has been told by a well—placed source that the scot is the frontrunner. everton are 16th in the table, just one point off the relegation zone. well, everton went through to the fourth round of the fa cup last night, and tonight it's the turn of another one of moyes* former sides — west ham. they're now managed by graham potter, and tonight's third round trip to aston villa, will be his first since being appointed. connor mcnamara is at villa park for us. even before this week's big managerial announcement for west ham, this was always a tasty fa cup under the friday night lights here in the park, where the highest cultures of the fa cup but now we have graham partisan west ham fans are hoping this is when they come out of the dark and he can bring it out. , , ., ., ., ., out. this is a toughie for villa and i know it's — out. this is a toughie for villa and i know it's like _ out. this is a toughie for villa and i know it's like playing _ out. this is a toughie for villa and i know it's like playing in - out. this is a toughie for villa and i know it's like playing in games l i know it's like playing in games like this— i know it's like playing in games like this and it's going to be a tough — like this and it's going to be a tough ask_ like this and it's going to be a tough ask for west him tonight to
