come and do your shopping, grab a trolley, you can see all the shelves where the food would have been. still wearing this mask, because whether you can see or not, the air is still thick with toxic fumes and it stings your eyes, and it tastes awful. and you can see why people are comparing it to a war zone. people are comparing it to a warzone. i people are comparing it to a war zone. i don't want to diminish the horror of a war zone, but that's what this feels like, just without, thankfully, the mass death. but it is really the only way to try to describe it. here is more from our correspondent peter bowes in los angeles. he explained why tackling the fires are so difficult. it's extremely difficult. and, you know, one moment there's a glimmer of hope because, and you've just been talking about the, in terms of getting these fires under control, the containment percentages, that these are the numbers that everyone across the city are looking out for constantly. how much of the fire has been contained? the firefighters are convinced that it's not going to spread
5:08 pm
any further, but those numbers are still very, very low. and the two big fires, pacific palisades, especially, the first one to start last tuesday, is still spreading and it's moving towards other densely populated areas. brentwood, again to the west of los angeles. also the san fernando valley, which is a sprawling area to the north of hollywood, and i'm right nowjust north of the san fernando valley, and there have been fires close to here, to the west and to the east as well. an extraordinary situation where you have all of these fires right across this greater sprawling city at the same time and that's a big part of the problem in terms of resources being stretched to the limit. and some political repercussions are beginning to start. we understand that at early stages there was a problem with the water supply, that the fire hydrants were actually running out of water. now we have the governor of california calling for an investigation into that. and i can tell you, i've heard
5:09 pm
a lot of people talking about this, that there's a tremendous amount of anger and frustration at the way in which the fire has been dealt with, and perhaps the attitude of the authorities. to some extent, having said that, equally, i think a lot of people are understanding of the situation, that the firefighters themselves have been absolutely stretched to the limit and in many cases have simply been helpless to put individual fires, the fires at individual houses, out because theyjust simply didn't have the resources or the time to get to everywhere. smoke is a constant threat to people now and as you say, right across a vast area. so health officials declaring a health emergency. and i think the immediate effect of that is simplyjust to raise the awareness of people that, look, these conditions are bad. you shouldn't be jogging, you shouldn't be running, you shouldn't be exercising outside, even if you're away from the fires, that the quality of the air poses a danger to people. and clearly the hospitals will be alerted to potential problems that people might be going in with breathing issues.
5:10 pm
all of these issues, of course, on top of the very immediate threat of the fires, which is, of course, uppermost in people's minds, that they have to get to safety. and there are so many still under evacuation orders, still under evacuation orders. that means they actually have to get out of their homes. others are under evacuation warnings. that means you need to be prepared to get out of your home. and there'll be a lot of people in the brentwood area, san fernando valley, in that situation right now, hopefully with their cases packed and their valuables, as much as they can, and their pets, ready to get away and to know where they're going to. that's part of the procedure here. everyone has to have a plan to know where you will go when you evacuate. will it be an evacuation centre? a friend's home or a relative's home in a safer part of los angeles, and how to navigate to actually get there? it's difficult to imagine a catastrophe on this scale. and, you know, i've lived here for a long time, nearly 30 years, and lived through fires before. there was a big one in my neighbourhood five years ago.
5:11 pm
it was quite devastating, but that was one fire. now we're dealing with multiple fires, and as you say, the entire neighbourhoods, pacific palisades was lovely and i talk about it in the past tense now. it was a lovely village—like suburb of los angeles. you would drive west towards the coast, and the centre of los angeles is a bit of a concrete jungle, fairly nondescript in places. but then you get further out to somewhere like pacific palisades, and it wasjust a beautiful place with shops and restaurants, and then, of course, a little bit further, you get to the coast, and it was a nice, thriving community. people who lived there had tended to live there for actually quite a long time. a lot of family homes there just completely flattened, leaving these people helpless, distraught. and i know to some extent what it feels like to at least think you've lost your home. it happened to me. i was amongst the lucky ones, and you might have heard the stories in the last few
5:12 pm
days of people actually getting back to their neighbourhoods, passing house after house after house that's burned down. then suddenly one appears that hasn't burned down inexplicably, and you get to your home and it's still there, and you almost feel guilty walking into your house and seeing your possessions, knowing that everyone around you has lost everything. peter refer to the evacuations that have been in place. earlier, we have the la county sheriff saying hundred and 50,000 people have been evacuated from la county and there are now 153,000 under evacuation orders due to these wildfires and another 166,000 under evacuation warnings, which, as peter mentioned, is a letter warning. you don't have to leave immediately but have to leave immediately but have to be ready to leave at the moment's notice. the fire chief said that the majority of charities... the sheriff, i beg your pardon, said the majority

of tragedies and rescues over the past few days have been of people who did not follow the evacuation orders. he is strongly advising people to leave when they are told, and also make preparations in case they are ordered to leave at short notice. the live pictures there, focusing in on some of there, focusing in on some of the houses in the path of the fires at risk. we know there has now been a degree of control taken over the eaton control ta ken over the eaton fire. control taken over the eaton fire. that is still 15% contained, but still affecting 14,000 contained, but still affecting 1a,000 acres. the palisades fire, the huge when it started on tuesday, which now covers 21,596 acres, according to the officials, is 11% contained, so the figure has gone up slightly from earlier when it was 8%. at the scale of destruction has become clear, and watching them from our pictures, you can see 5300 structures destroyed in the palisades fire alone, and the palisades fire alone, and the response obviously tricky because they are having to manage six fires at a time, or have been. the main ones we are
5:14 pm
focusing on at the moment are the palisades fire and the eaton fire, the biggest scale ones. they have also been talking about the investigation into what may have caused the fires in the first place, and on that, the police first said that they were having a fluid and active investigation into the causes of fire, so they are not ruling anything out at the moment, that the different authorities and federal agencies are working together to try and establish what caused these fires in the first place. richard weintraub is an la resident. he has been telling us about his attempts to save his home. in 1993, our —— my wife and i attempts to save his home. ii*u 1993, our —— my wife and i had lost our house in a fire in malibu, ironically. isaw lost our house in a fire in malibu, ironically. i saw how that played out and did not like the end of that story, so i decided against advice to stay and to fight the fire, and i got three houses going with powerful nozzles to wet down

all the foliage around us, and to wet the ground and to put out the embers. the smoke was incredibly thick. you could not breathe, but i was there for many, many hours alone, and by grace of god and a lot of blessings and prayers, our home was saved. but it was not without danger in doing so. 0ur correspondentjohn sudworth is in los angeles. tell us a bit about where you are and what is happening now. yes, i'mjust are and what is happening now. yes, i'm just off mulholland drive, this iconic los angeles neighbourhood up in the hills, you can probably see behind me, the smokejust rising you can probably see behind me, the smoke just rising beyond the smoke just rising beyond the ridge there. that is the focus of this very intensive effort now. we have seen helicopter after helicopter all night and into this morning, dropping a huge amount of water
5:16 pm
and fire retardant chemicals on the blaze on the other side of that hill. at the moment, although that is a real threat and there are new evacuation orders in place for the community is down at the bottom of the hill there, they do appear at the moment to be keeping it at bay. the real advantage, of course, is the weather. the wind speeds through the night and into this morning have been very favourable. the concern is that they are predicted to pick up again, and as you can probably hear, we are already feeling the beginnings of that knew where the patent moving in. and we have heard this afternoon about the sheer scale of the response afternoon about the sheer
