1:05 pm
winds are expected to intensify and are spreading so quickly. what kinds of measures are put in place with this district ahead of monday and tuesday one those winds are due to rise? you are exactly right. we are not to be the thing and have many days left to go. there are stronger winds last night and tonight, it is still in the evening here. we have bought from monday until wednesday and we're telling everyone that they need to stay alert and have their bag ready and need to be paying close attention to credible new source and other applications like the watch duty app which give people a really good, quick sense of when they need to be ready to leave their homes and switch back and that's very unfortunate circumstance. are all of those alert systems are working? we know that at the beginning of all of these things, in those initial days, alerts were going to the wrong people.
1:06 pm
are you confident that that is all sorted now? authorities as saying that this is all sorted out now. we need to make sure that they pay attention to multiple new stories we've been is seeing very good reporting from the television in los angeles who have been doing a greatjob with staying up—to—date with all it this and i do recommend going directly to the la fire county news sites and to this application, watch duty, a nonprofit group and has experienced massive growth. millions of people are now using it in los angeles to stay up to date with this fire. you've got an absolutely catastrophic situation on the ground. when it comes to finger pointing and the blame game, we have missing fingers being pointed.
1:07 pm
—— rock we are seeing a fingers being pointed. we know that the head of the la fire department has been criticising the la mayorfor approving the budget cut to the fire department but help us to understand where we are with those budget cuts because my understanding was that when the final budget was approved, the la fire department was up by nearly $60 million. can you help clarify what is factually correct here? yes. i am not an expert on the la city budget but i do understand that they were two pieces to the fire department budget and when you add them up together in some way, they added up to a moderate increase in the budget. of money and will take a lot of effort and will take a lot of people. unfortunately, this terrible tragedy, i hope, is what is going to help us do what we have to do. i think the main thing
1:08 pm
here is that we need to have a national conversation about how western communities like los angeles and many others in the american west are going to protect their cities from the threat of catastrophic wildfires. this is something that i have been talking about for many years and we know what to do, but it would take a lot of money and will take a lot of effort and will take a lot of people. unfortunately, this terrible tragedy, i hope, is what is going to help us do what we have to do. obviously, you're going to be dealing with people who are in trauma, people who have lost their lives, people who have lost absolutely everything. are you speaking to insurance companies, showing that some kind of payout will be potentially be happening? it that's what we are seeing on the ground is just insurmountable in terms of what people have lost. it is heartbreaking and catastrophic. every family has lost a home, it is absolutely heartbreaking situation. there will be literally thousands, potentially over 10,000 families like that. we are working hard to begin the conversation around insurance, as you say, the california fire insurance market was already shaky
1:09 pm
footing before this event and now, no one knows exactly where things are going to go. i guess that the main thing is that we put in place measures to enable protection and insurance going forward. we were having insurers leaving the states and reducing their coverage across the state, and this is going to make a somewhat difficult situation even worse now. that was congressmen for the 27th district which includes the hurst area. we are hoping to speak to our colleague who is their live imminently as well. just stay with us for the regulators are not what is happening across la —— for the very latest for what is happening in la. we know that at least 16 people have been killed in this absolute tragedy taking place in los angeles. will be back with that story

over her use of london properties linked to allies of her aunt, sheikh hasina, who was overthrown as the prime minister of bangladesh last year. but speaking to laura kuensberg, science secretary peter kyle said she should keep herjob until an investigation was carried out. here's our political correspondent, tom symonds with more. well, this has been going on for a long time. tulip siddiq faced a run of stories alleging that she effectively used properties obtained by herfamily, possibly as a result — and i say possibly as a result — of corruption in bangladesh. her aunt was the former premier of bangladesh and was deposed last year as a result of a corruption scandal. today, kemi badenoch, the conservative leader, has said it's time for keir starmer to sack tulip siddiq. he says that she has become a distraction for a government which should be looking at the problems of this country and that the pm not sacking her, makes it clear he's not as bothered by integrity as he claims. so cue peter kyle, who arrived on the laura kuenssberg programme this morning.
1:12 pm
he was asked what should happen given that siddiq has herself sent her case off to the prime minister's standards adviser to be assessed. tulip has referred herself to the authorities to be investigated. that needs to be completed. but the thing you can guarantee with this government and keir starmer as prime minister, is he will abide to the outcome of that inquiry. so if laura magnus finds that she is heard, she will be out? keir said numerous times he has respect for these institutions. he has given them more independence. more authority to do their own inquiries. i'm pretty sure that he will adhere to what comes out. and so far, sir keir starmer is saying he is backing his ministerfor now. ok, so that's that issue there. we've also had mel stride, the shadow chancellor. five he was also speaking to laura kuenssberg and he was going after the rachel reeves who is at the moment actually in china. yes.
1:13 pm
so all sorts of things happening on the economy this week, the cost of borrowing has gone up. rachel reeves has gone to china to try and start some discussions with the government there about how britain and china improve their trade. she's obtained about 600 million, which is quite a small amount in benefits over the next five years. mel stride said she shouldn't be there, cap in hand, as he put it, but it was put back to him that the trouble that the government is facing on the economy at the moment partly comes from the fact that they inherited a very difficult situation when they took over six months ago, won the election. and mel stride, the shadow chancellor, said that the previous governments, liz truss and rishi sunak and what they did and rishi sunak and what they did on the economy could not on the economy could not be blamed for what is be blamed for what is happening now and labour happening now and labour is dealing with. this is what he said. is dealing with. this is what he said. the first thing they did the first thing they did when they came into office when they came into office was to talk the economy down was to talk the economy down in order to pitch roll, in order to pitch roll, for reneging on the promises as i say, where the cost for reneging on the promises they made, particularly on tax they made, particularly on tax and spending during and spending during the general election. they then ramped up all the general election. they then ramped up all these taxes on business, these taxes on business, which has had the consequences which has had the consequences that i've set out. that i've set out. they're borrowing huge they're borrowing huge amounts of money, some of which is inflationary. amounts of money, some of which is inflationary.
1:14 pm
and we're now in a position, and we're now in a position, as i say, where the cost of servicing our debt under this government, which is an additional 12 billion a year, you could actually employ 300,000 nurses for that amount of money. and rachel reeves may say, well, i've gone to china, and i managed to get £120 million per year additional injection into the uk economy. that's got to be set against £12 billion of additional payments simply to service our debt. so i think the government are finding it harder to push off those accusations, push off those claims

from the conservatives and find colleague sport and join my colleague mark edwards. hello from the bbc sport centre. the fa cup weekend continues with some cracking ties on sunday, the pick of them is at the emirates as arsenal welcome defending champions manchester united to north london. meanwhile tottenham hotspur are at non—league tamworth. but which premier league clubs could join brentford in being dumped out at the 3rd round stage? newcastle, crystal palace, southampton and ipswich — all facing opponents lower down the football pyramid.

as we said, the most eye—catching contest of the weekend arsenal against manchester united, and the holders fresh from a morale—boosting 2—2 draw at liverpool last week. it's been a tough start to life though at united for ruben amorim. however arteta is a big fan of the new united head coach. i will choose the best team to win because we want also to win the cup. and like you said, in the cup, you never know. so let's win. sometimes it's better to win this kind of game and then you have less time to rest. but your mind is so different that you can cope with the physical aspect of the game. when you look especiallyl about the big teams, how they perform and the results i that they got, very impressive. i know him well. i followed him a lot - while he was in portugal, and there is a big reason why he is where he is at - the moment and he fully deserves to be there. i 2 matches in the scottish premiership on sunday rangers trying to somehow reel in celtic who lead by 18 points at the top of the league

rangers are at home to stjohnstone, while aberdeen host hearts. it's not been a good start for england in the women's ashes, beaten by australia in the opening one—day match in sydney. ash gardner punished them with the ball and the bat. gardner took 3 wickets as england were bowled out for 203, and then scored an unbeaten 42 to lead australia to victory with more than 11 overs to spare. it's a relentless schedule to this multi—format series — the second one—day match takes place in melbourne tomorrow. there are a few things that we could definitely work on. 0bviously, australia worked in very well and we dropped in a few important moments for forward, there are a few places that we can work on and really focus on in the next game. as a whole, we can take a fair amount of confidence into the game. we are one game into a really long series but we are to— zero down and we have got to— zero down and we have got to start for the next game and imagine that it is 0—0 and come back and that is beauty of the game. —— obviously, we are too— down. india's injured fast bowlerjasprit bumrah will miss the five—match t20 international series with england, while mohammad shami has returned to the squad after more than a year out with an ankle injury. bumrah was the highest wicket—taker in the recent test series with australia which india lost 3—1 but had
