5:04 pm
from that news conference, on containment but still a very dangerous situation. yes. it was a news conference with some positive news but also some disturbing information. it seems the firefighters are indeed making some progress on the two biggest fires that are still burning, especially the palisades fire which was the first to start last tuesday and it is encroaching, yes, and other neighbourhoods. but at a much slower pace than it was even 2a hours ago so that is good. there is still a tremendous amount of work to do. still burning largely out of control and many, many people in the city remain under evacuation orders. and that means that they have to get out of their home. evacuation warnings also that fire is possibly going to engulf their homes and they may have to leave at a moment's notice but, in the disturbing respect, there were a lot of details about some of the activities
5:05 pm
that have been going on, especially in those evacuated areas where, as we heard during the news conference, several people have been arrested, accused of looting, including a number of people who, according to the authorities, where dressed as firefighters but where there are two burglarised peoples homes. indeed, we heard the fire chief saying that he was in one area and he saw someone who looked like a firefighter actually sitting on the curb by the road. he asked that person if they were all right and then realised that they were actually in handcuffs and had been detained because they were involved in this kind of activity. for many people here, thisjust of activity. for many people here, this just beggars of activity. for many people here, thisjust beggars belief that some people would attempt to steal property from people who have been evacuated from their homes. we also heard, on their homes. we also heard, on the positive side, about to be out pouring that we have seen across the city from people providing money, food, clothing
5:06 pm
to those who have been evacuated and, tragically, lost everything. evacuated and, tragically, lost everything-— evacuated and, tragically, lost everything. you mentioned the olice everything. you mentioned the police response _ everything. you mentioned the police response and _ everything. you mentioned the police response and some - everything. you mentioned the police response and some of i police response and some of that emerge from the conference is the scale of what they are dealing with. 1200 personnel, the sheriff was talking about but also with the firefighters in the palisades area, more than 4000 firefighters and also 3000 firefighter said the scale of this is quite extraordinary, isn't it? , . isn't it? these are huge numbers _ isn't it? these are huge numbers and _ isn't it? these are huge numbers and not - isn't it? these are huge numbers and not only l isn't it? these are huge l numbers and not only do isn't it? these are huge - numbers and not only do we have local firefighters, california fighters from the north of the state as well, neighbouring states, washington, oregon, arizona all providing personnel and equipment and also we are hearing from mexico and canada that they have sent in personnel to help the local firefighters and this was a request from hell was initiated, we were told earlier, before the
5:07 pm
firefighters really took hold. —— make a request for help. i don't think anyone was able to predictjust how widespread these fires would be, how intense are tammany and that is really what has caused the problems. there are so many fires in why the separate areas, 50 or 60 miles between some of these fires. that the firefighters have to deal with. and you were reporting only yesterday about the criticism that has come from president elect trump about the response dealing with these fires are now to imagine the news conference he has been invited but there is no clear picture yet about when he might come. well, or indeed, whether he will come. the authorities here, officials and indeed the governor's office have said that they have not had any response from the president—elect. they have invited him to come to see the devastation first hand but we know that he has been on social media criticising the response
5:08 pm
of california officials, los angeles officials in particular, calling them incompetent in the way that they have dealt with questioning why the fires have not been put out so far. you mentioned _ not been put out so far. you mentioned in _ not been put out so far. you mentioned in passing - not been put out so far. you mentioned in passing the donations and the situation for people getting help from ordinary other people in los angeles. how difficult is it in this next stage for people to find out whether they will get any kind of insurance claim if they have insurance? and what do they do if they don't have insurance?— insurance? they don't have insurance _ insurance? they don't have insurance they've _ insurance? they don't have insurance they've got - insurance? they don't have insurance they've got a - insurance? they don't have insurance they've got a lot| insurance? they don't have i insurance they've got a lot of problems ahead of them. and thatis problems ahead of them. and that is the issue for so many people. that had insurance and then were denied insurance by their insurance companies. their policies were cancelled largely because a lot of these fires are taking place in high—risk areas, the insurance companies, for their own reasons, decided not to continue covering people and
5:09 pm
that includes in areas where the fires have been burning in the fires have been burning in the last few days. so those people will tremendous financial hardship in terms of moving forward. there is a move and we had just heard this in the past 24 hours, to a stall and backdate the ending of insurance policies. in other words, the insurance companies will be forced to honour those policies that they'd otherwise told people that they would be ending. and they will backdate that to include this coming disaster. so there could be a glimmer of hope that the people who, for one moment, thought that they were not injured but might actually be able to get some assistance moving forward. thank you very much indeed for that update. thank you. thank you. cbs news correspondent charlie de mar is in the pacific palisades area of los angeles, one of the worst affected areas. he's given us this update. tragically, that death toll is expected to rise as the clean—up begins here in los angeles.
5:10 pm
this destruction that you see behind me, this is home after home in the pacific palisades neighbourhood where we are today. and it is really hard to imagine. i mean, you see these cars burned out, brought down just to twisted metal. firefighters have been busy attacking this fire. of course, the wind. that has been the big story. firefighters had a good chance to really get ahead. they said that they made progress on the palisades fire, which is the largest fire. they, of course, have been tackling, attacking this fire on the ground. but more importantly, in the air. we have seen those shots where we have seen helicopters and tankers and fighter planes dropping water one after another, trying to get a handle on this fire. the winds were calm for much of yesterday, but then late yesterday into today again picking up, so could be another challenge for firefighters. that largest fire, the palisades fire. as we mentioned, just 11% contained right now and it has already burned over 23,000 acres. so a really widespread fire giving such a challenge to firefighters. and this has been an international effort.
5:11 pm
there have been planes that are capable of dropping water that have been flown in from canada. and just yesterday, a number of firefighters from mexico were flown in to join this fight. we are just about a block from the iconic sunset boulevard, which is in movies i'm sure you've heard of, or if you've been to california. it is a beautiful street here that runs through the pacific palisades with multi—million dollar homes surrounding it. it really is an idyllic place to live. it is one of the most expensive pieces of real estate, not only here in california, but across the country. talking to people returning, they left with their neighbourhoods on fire, returning, and their homes are unrecognisable. we've talked to people who weren't even sure if it was their home. they said, you know, everything matches up on looking on their phone.
5:12 pm
this is my address, but it is so unrecognisable that it isjust it really is hard to put into words what these people are going through. and it is only natural that once people do come back to their homes, that they're going to want to try and sift through the rubble here. but leaders are urging people not to. that's because this ash may contain lead, arsenic, and other harmful materials. there has been some issues of why the fire department's budget was cut by millions of dollars. the fire chief says that she's been sounding the alarm leading up to this fire, and that ultimately, this should be the loudest alarm for the mayor and other officials here that they do need help. they do need resources that a fire of this magnitude, in some ways was predictable, and the fire chief said that she simply didn't have the resources to respond to something like this. there really is, uh, it is so widespread. it has affected so many people. and as this fire continues
5:13 pm
to change directions with the wind again, firefighters can only do so much. they can only predict so much. mother nature is going to do the rest. and as you mentioned in the beginning, brentwood, the encino valley, those homes are now under evacuation orders. they left their homes yesterday and people are reallyjust glued to the television, hoping and waiting and wishing that the fire doesn't spread to their homes. it really is a helpless feeling for so many who are just left to watch and hope that their home is still remaining when this is all said and done. george whitesides is a congressman from california, representing the 27th district, which includes parts of northern los angeles county, including the hurst fire area. he gave us an update on what is happening there. we have been so far relatively lucky. the amazing firefighters of our community have been able to contain the hurst fire, as well as another fire, the lydia fire. a little bit north. and so, so far the fire has not caused widespread structural
5:14 pm
damage, as you have seen in the catastrophic images from the palisades and from the eaton fire. we are not all the way through this thing. we have many days left to go. there were stronger winds last night or tonight, it's still in the evening here. and we have more from monday through wednesday. we're telling everyone that they need to stay alert. they need to have their go bag ready. they need to be paying close attention to credible news sources like yours and other applications, like the watch duty app, that give people a really good, quick sense of when they need to be ready to leave their homes. in that very unfortunate circumstance. we have seen very good reporting from the television media, actually in los angeles. they've been doing a greatjob of staying up to date with all of this, and i do recommend going to the directly to the la fire county, news sites, and this application watch duty, which is a nonprofit group,
5:15 pm
and it has experienced massive growth — millions of people are now using it in los angeles to stay up to date with this fire. a man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a woman, believed to be a hospital nurse, was seriously injured in a stabbing in royal 0ldham hospital's a&e department. it is believed a member of the public attacked a member of staff with a bladed article or sharp instrument, which was not a knife. the woman, who is in her 50s, suffered life—changing injuries and remains in hospital for treatment. a 37—year—old man was arrested at the scene. a police officer in north yorkshire has died, when she, and another man, were hit by a lorry while helping at the scene of a crash. a man's been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. chief constable of north yorkshire police tim forber spoke a little earlier: it is really important that any witnesses to what happened yesterday to come forward. i would just appeal to anyone who was driving southbound,
