hello, i'm karin giannone. hello, i'm karin giannone. there is still no respite from the extreme conditions fueling california's wildfire emergency. the threat of fire in los angeles remains �*very high�*, with strong winds forecast and "critical weather conditions to continue until wednesday". the authorities have been giving fresh updates on the disaster.

our sense of being. the city faces a massive task to provide housing for the areas that are lost. the scale of the destruction in neighbourhoods is vast. whole schools gone. as you know, our beloved south campus has been severely damaged by the recent fires and many of our families and staff have experienced great personal loss. crews had begun to slow the spread of the eaton fire but strong winds are driving it back into life. this helicopter�*s flying just above us, just dropping water now, trying to keep those flames at bay. above and below, they battle on. fire crews are now focusing their efforts up in the los angeles national forest, above altadena, where a new area of the blaze has just opened up and there's a renewed sense of urgency because down here is a large

nasa facility that the flames have been moving towards. 16 people have now died in these fires. they are already among the deadliest in california's history. and officials say the death toll will rise. emma vardy, bbc news, los angeles. and, emma has sent this update as firefighters continue to try and contain a fresh flare—up in the angeles national forest. it is burning on both sides of us, up the hill. and down into the valley, too. there are helicopters flying just above us, just dropping water now. trying to keep those flames at bay. right here, there is a real sense of urgency, because down that way, there is a huge nasa facility that the flames have been moving towards. and they have been trying really hard to protect that.

as well as trying to put these fires out, with water and with fire retardant, what they are doing now is trying to clear lots of this dry vegetation, trying to solve it down so that the fire has less direct route. it down so that the fire has less to rip through. this is normally a beautiful area. i have in hiking to an amazing waterfall up in the cells. waterfall up in the hills. right now looks so different. the eaton fire is the second biggest fire and has burnt through 1a,000 acres. it's currently 27 percent contained. this is a picture of peter divito's house before it was burnt down last week. and this is it after the fire took hold of it — burning everything in its

said, we are fine, it isjust the wind. the power appeared to go out when we looked outside. we had a back—up generator so we had some power to some of the room in the house. you know, we were ok. we had the wind. we had no text or calls, nothing. cut to 730, 745. abba neighbour begins screaming over the fence and screaming our names. we hear her calling our names. we hear her calling our names and we say: what is going on? she says: we need to leave. we said why? she said, look. we see the flames crossing over the hill. we needed to get out of there, right? we get the dogs and whatever we could. we got a bag of toiletries for the evening, hoping for the best and that we were going to come back. abba gate was stuck. the power was off. i had to get the gate open and get the dogs in the car, then we rushed to abba friend who pretty much rescued us, we went to her house down the street. that was in

trying to console my wife. i took a quick video. i was trying to hold her. i said: we need to leave. she wouldn't leave. my neighbour was saying: we need to leave, it isn't safe, neverfires we need to leave, it isn't safe, never fires all around. the street was literally burning. we began walking back. we had to go back because browsers were invertebrate of us. they were really raging. we made it back to the car safer. we were numb. it is hard to comprehend, when it looked like a nuclear bomb went off and levelled the entire city. you look through, and you just see the hundreds of metres. we were not prepared. there were no precautions taken. why were we not... ? we don't understand where we were not better prepared. there were no texts. nobody came to callers. if it wasn't for a neighbour then who knows what would have happened to us. it is beyond reproach how our government handled the

situation. from karen bass to gather news on, say city and local community government, they have failed us. in every possible way. and it is an absolute shame. they need to be massive amounts of accountability on every level. why we were not better prepared. we are the fifth biggest economy in the world and we don't have better technology to better prepare ourselves in any way, shape or form for something this catastrophic. and it is still burning. it is... it is absolutely inexcusable, in every way, shape, and form. and... i don't even know what else to say, other than that it is an absolute tragedy of the greatest scale, and los angeles will never be the same. abba community will never be the same. altadena was diverse, socio— economically and culturally. in every way you can go. artists, businesspeople, everybody. it was filled with love and light and beauty. and connection. and
