hello and welcome to business today. i'm steve lai. before we get to our top stories, we begin in south korea where investigators have arrested impeached president yoon suk—yeol. he is the country's first ever first sitting president to be arrested. he was detained after an hours—long stand—off the police had attempted to arrest him earlier this month, but failed to do so following a stand—off with the presidential security service. so far there hasn't been a major impact on korean marketsjust yet, with the benchmark kospi index currently trading 0.3% higher. to the united states now, where social media giant meta has said it will cut its workforce by 5%. plans by the owner of facebook and instagram to lay off workers come on the same day that another of america's tech giants, microsoft, said it would pause hiring in a major unit in america. michelle fleury

reports from new york. in a memo to staff, mark zuckerberg said 2025 will be an intense year for the company as it works on building what he described as some of the most important technologies in the world. mr zuckerberg went on to say in order to raise the performance of meta staff, the company would take steps to move out low—performing employees faster than originally planned. currently, meta is employing 72,000 people. cutting 5% of its payroll will be its first major staff reduction since it shed a quarter of its workforce in 2022 and 23. meanwhile, microsoft has also given a signal jobs may be becoming harder to come by in the us technology sector. it told its workers on tuesday it plans to pause hiring in its consulting arm in america. this comes only a week after it announced a round of layoffs.

so many actual crimes that go unpunished. staying with big tech, we are days away from donald trump becoming the 47th president of the united states. how he will regulate the technology industry and its players that are making progress in areas like artificial intelligence, remains to be seen. adam kovacevich is the founder and ceo of the technology trade group, chamber of progress. he says personal relationships with mr trump could make or break companies. people in tech have observed how we operated in his first term, it was important to have ceo level relationships that that could prevent him from targeting companies and that donald trump *s regulation often really rose or fell based on whether he liked the company personally. if you are a ceo of a tech company or any company you would rather start off a second trump term with a positive relationship. there are many tech stories that will have to be taking a stance on.
4:34 am
what think his views are on tiktok or the potential break—up of google? one of the things you see with donald trump when he talks about tech it is usually through the lens of, is this service nice to me? i think it is a mistake to interpret ideology when it may be ego. when he spoke about google during the campaign he was asked about breaking up google and immediately the way that he talked about it was the way that he showed up in google search results, when he talks about tiktok he talks about his campaign content performing well on tiktok. and now that company executives know this when they go to meet with him they show him this data and show him this is how well your content performed on our service. that is really where it starts with donald trump. this is a person whose first term they sued to block the acquisition, the merger of at&t time warner because the company owns cnn and trump did not like the cnn coverage.
4:35 am
this is an important lens for understanding how he approaches regulation. and on the policy front, biden enacted the chips act and is been keen to limit chinese access to high—end tech. when it comes to semiconductors, where does donald trump stand? will he continue with what the biden administration has done? one of the things that will be interesting is a host of questions particularly ai. i suspect that donald trump is going to shift policy—making from a position where it has been concerned about safety and regulating and not letting us companies have too much power to beating china and beating chinese companies in al, in these services. so it is much more a tech nationalism approach. one of the things you will see tech leaders do, leaders of us tech companies do
