you are very welcome along to the programme wherever you are watching around the world. we'll start with the north london derby at the emirates where arsenal beat rivals tottenham 2—1 in the premier league to move just four points behind leaders liverpool. the gunners, who have played a game more than liverpool, were desperate to return to winning ways after successive losses in both the league cup and fa cup. and they went a goal down early, son heung—min*s shot was deflected in off william saliba, but they got back on level terms when gabriel's header from a corner rebounded off dominic solanke, before leandro trossard put

them ahead on the stroke of half—time. mikel arteta's side saw out the game and breathed new life into the title race. from the first minute, we were really at it, really intense, showed a lot of quality, played with real purpose to hurt them with or without the ball and we created an unbelievable atmosphere which helps a lot. we know the meaning of the game and we know how important it is for everybody so it's a gift that we have the opportunity to make a lot of our supporters very happy and i'm sure we have accomplished that and they will feel very proud about it. just not acceptable, that first half, that we could go out there in such a big game and be so passive and we haven't done that for quite a while in the game of football and we've paid a price for it. aston villa were away at everton and some villa fans had a surprise visitor in birmingham before they made the trip north. the prince of wales came to a pub to enjoy a drink with fellow villa fans.

hejoined eight supporters around a group of tables, before the fans, all season ticket holders, made the trip to everton. and they got value for the trip as ollie watkin scored the winning goalfor aston villa at goodison to ruin david moyes' return to everton. he was taking charge of the toffees after replacing sean dyche, but there was little joy for the scot almost 12 years after leaving the club for manchester united. for villa though, it's their first away win in six attempts. sean dyche left the group of players with great character and great attitude so i'm really pleased to be taking over that. what i now need to do is add

quality, find ways of maybe getting a bit of results if that's possible. but you just can't change the whole thing around right away. we've had some chances, some clear chances in the first half, we didn't score but we tied the second half again to push and try to dominate and even control of the game better than the first half. but it was completely different. we didn't control late in the first half, we controlled the game but we score one goal and we defend more or less well. alexander isak scored for the eighth league game in a row as newcastle eased to a 3—0 victory over struggling wolves at st james' park. the swede got two of the goals, taking his tally for the season to 15 in the top flight. anthony gordon scored the third, as newcastle equalled their club record of nine straight wins in all competitions. we had to be patient and we had to play a different way today, slightly. we had a lot of the ball in that first half, we knew they would be stubborn opponents, they absolutely were, i thought they played well in the game and i thought

it was on a knife*s edge until we get the first goal and that's the big moments so credit to the player to keeping control and dominating the ball in the way that we did. we got a lucky break with the first goal, it was a big deflection but i think we overall deserved it. first of all, proud of my players because we try to get another result. the difference between one team and the other team, when we got the chance to score, we missed and they scored. you know, against this kind of team, we cannot — one mistake is one goal. at the king power stadium, jean—philippe mateta and marc guehi struck in the second half as crystal palace won 2—0 at leicester and condemned the foxes to a sixth straight league defeat. boos rang around the ground at full—time after a result that left ruud van nistelrooy*s side still two points from safety. we were speaking about champions league opposition

and the tough run we had because of the opponents and we wanted to prove today that we were growing and we improved and showed out in today's game and we did that for 45 minutes. i think very well. but of course, it's about being consistently performing over 90 minutes and we are not there yet. we are lucky that it was 0—0, it was a draw at halftime. and it was a little bit louder than usual, in the dressing room, and showed a good reaction but still, i think we can perform better than we did but we scored a nice goal where we are very compact in defending and we didn't gift them a lot for scoring goals and, yes, we decided the game was a set play so we are pleased with the three points. this then is how things look at the top — leaders liverpool do have a game in hand — but arsenal have closed the gap, after arne slot*s side dropped points at forest on tuesday. arteta's side up to second, four points behind. in the race for the european

spots — villa are seventh. at the bottom half, spurs are now without a win in five league games and are stuck in 13th place. crystal palace, one spot behind. in 16th, everton have one win in their past 11 games and have failed to score in nine of those, just a point above the drop. while wolves and leicester are still in the relegation places after defeats. one game in the scottish premiership on wednesday as rangers were comfortable winners against aberdeen, but remain 13 points behind leaders celtic. the world champion kyren wilson is through to the quarter—finals of the masters snooker. he beat china's zhang anda by six frames to four at london's alexandra palace in a high quality contest. wilson has already won two events this season after claiming the world title last may but is still looking to land the masters for the first time. in the day's other match, the former world champion luca brecel beat masters debutant chris wakelin by six

frames to three. he'll now face wilson in the quarters. rugby union's six nations begins at the end of the month and gregor towsend has announced his 37—man scotland squad. new zealand born fergus burke has been included. the saracens fly half is also eligable for england, but qualifies for scotland through his glasweigan grandfather. there's also been a first call up for glasgow back—rower jack mann, while sione tuipulotu has been confirmed as captain. he's been speaking to paul barnes. i kind of, take more responsibility and i feel like it fuels my game a little bit when i wear the ca ptain's armband. it feels special to me, if you know what i mean, and i'd like to think the added responsibility, the added pressure fuels my game and my mindset to want to perform at the highest level and i love it. i love rocking up to game day knowing that your team will be

looking at you to lead the way and i suppose, you put a bit more pressure on myself and a little bit more responsibility to try and perform for your teammates. it's been a long, long time since scotland and have won the championship, the five nations as it was back then. what can we expect from scotland year? i want the public to know that we're really focused on this first game against italy. this is something, this is a game that we got wrong last year in the championship and ended up hurting where we finished and we know italy are a really class outfit and they give us a lot of trouble last year. it's something that we want to fix and we want to show how much we've grown since that tournament. so, there no promises for me or anything, i'm excited to show the public are much we've grown. tell me about your passion for scotland because that's evident when we see you play, it means a lot to you but for certain parts of your life, australia might have been the dream? i've never shied away from that at all, that i grew up in australia wanting to be

a wallaby, that's my dream. i played junior wallabies. my career didn't turn out how i thought it would be when i was a kid and scotland gave me an opportunity to represent parts of my heritage. i supposed when i got here, i've made a decision that i wasn't going to do anything halfway. if i was going to play for scotland, i was going to try to play for scotland properly. i didn't want to finish up with ten caps or 15 caps. rory mcilroy says he advised his fellow northern irishman tom mckibbin against switching to liv golf. mckibbin has been linked with a move to the saudi—backed circuit over the past week although there is no official confirmation he has decided to give up the pga tour card he secured in november. the world number three says he would "make a different decision" to the one the player he has mentored is contemplating. personally for me, it would be a little disappointing if it were to happen. but again, it's not — i made it perfectly clear, i'm not going to stand in your way to make a decision that you feel like a need to make for yourself.

but at the same time, ijust feel like he's givingup a lot to not really benefit that much. rory mcilroy there and you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport website and app. bye from me. hello there. after a wild wintry start to the new year, the weather story has quietened down. and in fact, we had sunshine topping and tailing the country. it was warm as well in eastern scotland, 16 degrees through the afternoon on wednesday in aberdeenshire, with eight hours of sunshine in cornwall. that is because we've got an area of high pressure with us, keeping things very quiet indeed. this weak weather front brought a little bit of showery rain into the northwest,

but with light winds and clear skies, unfortunately, at this time of year, that allows fog to form. so we could have some dense fog around as we go through the early hours of thursday morning across parts of england and south wales. visibility dense in places, less than 100m, so there could be some disruption to travel first thing. this is where we're likely to see the fog. there will be quite a lot of cloud across southeast england, a murky start here, and more cloud up into the north—west. but sandwiched in between the two, where we've got those clear skies and the fog forming, temperatures may well fall just below freezing, so a chilly start to thursday as well. so as we go through thursday, the fog will gradually lift and thin. by around 11:00, we're expecting most of it to have eased away, some of the cloud across southeast england will break up, but it will stay rather grey. the best of the sunshine then sandwiched in between the two. that cloud continuing to be a nuisance across the far north—west of scotland. where there's cloud, we'll see 9—10 degrees. in the clearer skies, you've got the sunshine, but a little cooler
4:57 am
with 6—7 degrees. now, the high pressure is starting to drift its way over into europe, allowing these weak weather fronts to push in. so there will be some showery outbreaks of rain moving their way across scotland and perhaps northern ireland. a bit more of a breeze, hopefully breaking up the cloud, allowing for some glimpses of brightness into the afternoon, but generally a quiet day for many, and temperatures again between 7—12 degrees. now, as we move into the start of the weekend, the high continues to drift its way steadily east, and so the wind changes direction a touch. we lose the south—westerly, drag in more of the southeasterly, which will block this weather front from making that much of an impression, and it will also make it feel a little bit colder as we go into the weekend. so temperatures falling away once again.
