my constituents who have gone through such horrific abuse. can i ask my right honourable friend, how she will ensure that not only the individuals who have... who are responsible for this overviews are caught and convicted but also, those who failed to protect and to support these vulnerable young people? because it's notjust young women that have been affected in oldham, it's also young men. and how they will be held to account, thank you. my my honourable friend is right to raise these important points and i know this is an issue she has worked on for many years. we actually need to strengthen the law on this. we need to have a much stronger legal framework in order to be able to make sure there is proper accountability, notjust holding to accountability, notjust holding to account and properly punishing perpetrators of appalling abuse, but also holding to account institutions and individuals who fail to take the

action that is needed to protect our children. that means the duty to report, making it an offence to cover up child abuse, and also a duty of candour to be able to comply and to provide the information and provide the transparency in these cases, and also looking at the other local mechanisms that we need in place in areas like hers and across the country to be able to make sure there is proper accountability when things go really badly wrong. ifilmir things go really badly wrong. chair ofthe things go really badly wrong. chair of the select _ things go really badly wrong. chair of the select committee. dame karen bradley _ of the select committee. dame karen bradley |_ of the select committee. dame karen bradle . _, , ., ., bradley. i welcome the statement and my committee — bradley. i welcome the statement and my committee will— bradley. i welcome the statement and my committee will look— bradley. i welcome the statement and my committee will look carefully - bradley. i welcome the statement and my committee will look carefully at. my committee will look carefully at it. we will come back with further points. but two points today, the first is around duty to report, in many cases reports were made by the victims were not listened to and not believed, so what can she do to make

areas, we have needed to have other action, including, for example, action, including, for example, action by inspectorates to follow—up. we believe that the current system is not strong enough and that is why we have set out work under way involving the cabinet office and involving local councils in order to make sure that we can strengthen the accountability arrangements to be able to both follow—up and support local inquiries where they are relevant, but also to be able to use existing powers that are in place as well. this powers that are in place as well. as a powers that are in place as well. s a barrister powers that are in place as well. is a barrister and a former crown prosecutor for ii; a barrister and a former crown prosecutor for 11; years, can a barrister and a former crown prosecutorfor 11; years, can i a barrister and a former crown prosecutor for 11; years, can i tell this house sexual abuse and assault occurred throughout the united kingdom and are not specific to any gender, race or religion. just look at the case in france. but there is one group of victims who are often not spoken about, that is young boys
