time for a look at the weather... good evening. not much to talk about on the weather front. it is pretty benign for the weekend and into next week before we see some changes. more about that in a moment. it is dry, it will turn chilly like we have seen in last the 2a hours and we will see dense fog overnight across england and wales which could linger. there is a blocking area of high pressure across the near continent dragging some very slightly cooler airfrom continent dragging some very slightly cooler air from france with light winds although low pressure is trying to push into western area so more of a breeze on the weather front is trying to make inroads on sunday. tonight, largely cloudy, some holes in the cloud, knows his gotin, north wales, north—east england. the cloud across england and wales very thin, temperatures will fall close to freezing, a touch
6:31 pm
of frost, not so close across western areas, tomorrow, mostly dry, it will start grey with mist here and there. sunshine will appear in western england, wales, northern ireland, none in scotland, elsewhere rather gloomy temperatures four to 6 degrees. the weather front tries to make inroads on sunday, could bring rain to northern ireland and western scotland later in the day, much the same on sunday, dense fog for england and wales, the midlands and southern and eastern england. sunshine across northern and eastern areas but rain pushing into the far north—west later on. 10 degrees for belfast, a chilly day to come for most of eastern scotland and england and wales. the same next week, mid week onwards, low pressure bringing more settled weather with the recovery of temperatures.

from skiing because of the pain. i from skiing because of the pain. love what i do so to i love what i do so i never wanted to slow down, but it was really hard. it was really, really hard. welcome to the programme. he's used to breaking records, well today, erling haaland and manchester city confirmed the biggest deal in british football history has been signed. the super striker*s new contract will keep him at the club until 2034, by which time, haaland will be 3a years old. his boss pep guardiola has often said that the norweigen has made him a better manager and, while city find themselves in the unfamiliar position of sixth in the premier league table, guardiola feels haaland has found stability and commitment at the club and in manchester.
6:34 pm
he came from norway, i think... i think the weather here is better than where he was born and he said perfectly, i think what happened is he loves the club, the people he is around, he loves the premier league and to be here with his wife and now his father so there is no better place that he could be right now and in ten years, i would say. but it is exceptional news for all of us, for the club. when recent assignment this type of contract that has never been done before to show how desperate he wants to be here. the striker*s renewal comes as city await the outcome of their disciplinary case with the premier league. the club — which could face a huge sanction if found guilty — have denied the 115 charges
6:35 pm
levelled against them. it's not known if there are any clauses in haaland's contract if city were to face any possible repercussions. but if he does stay, it certainly means that he could break even more records. currently haaland has a scoring ratio of almost a goal a game in the premier league with 79 goals in 87 matches. he's scored a remarkable eight hatricks — three goals or more in a single match — in his premier league career so far. 0pta has calculated that if he keeps up his current ratio of 0.9 goals per game haaland would catch alan shearer*s all—time premier league scoring record of 260 goals in his 287th game. if he stays for that long, there is no doubt will break the record. it might be someone else*s by then, because i don't know, it may be harry kane or most solid —— mo
6:36 pm
salah. but there is no doubt an f? and it is a big if because it takes into 3a years of age, if he does all of those things that he should have the premier league record goal—scoring lies. when he goes three or four games without scoring, he's bigger does than anyone else because of how good he is. he is used to that. that is something that has become accustomed to and that won't affect him, but he maybe has suffered as much as the city are suffering the season for various amounts of reasons. but they will be back and i'm hoping to say he will be back because when you look at the top of the goal—scoring charts, he is still up there. for him to put his name to a new contract for the manager to do that, and must give them confidence going forward and huge relief. we know that they have
6:37 pm
got charges and when that comes out, if it comes out, we really don't know what may happen or may not happen. but it would not surprise me if there were clauses in both the manager and players contracts because what will happen, if anything, then we really don't know, but i guess he may have to cover himself for every eventuality. haaland's deal is the longest in the premier league's history, passing the nine—year contract that cole palmer signed with chelsea last august. let's take a look at some of the deals of a similar length. as you can see it's the south west london club that's set the trend for these long deals. palmer's contract takes him through tojune 2033. nicolas jackson's contract expires at the same time. enzo fernadez is signed up untiljune 2032. so how do they benefit the club? football finance expert kieren maguire explains.
6:38 pm
when a footballer signs a contract, the cost of signing the player is spread over the life of the contract so when erling haaland initially signed, i think you take both the transfer fee and signed, i think you take both the transferfee and agency signed, i think you take both the transfer fee and agency fees he came to gather around £60 million. that works out as a £12 million a year cost to manchester city so 60 divided by five. what we are not going to is we are going to take his book value of halfway through the contract of £30 million and spread that over nine and a half years. so from an accountants point of view, it is actually quite a smart deal from manchester city's perspective because they reduce his transfer cost in the accounts and that will allow them to absorb the substantial increase in wages. i don't think it will be of any benefit to manchester city's psr position but it has to be observed that manchester city are in
6:39 pm
an excellent psr position because they have had the success of winning trophies and recent years which is increased bonuses and broadcasting income but what has gone on to the radar it is manchester city has been successful in selling players in generating huge profits on those deals like cole palmer and other young players who have moved on from manchester city so they were never in doubt when it came to psr. i think what will be the case that the elite clubs in particular will be trying to get players on extra long contracts to protect the value of their investments in the player so their investments in the player so the worse case scenario and the player was sold and they sell for five years remaining on the contract, they can generate full market value. compared to the saudi arabia prayer leak where they have three of the highest played football players in the world, i think it will be substantially behind that, but it will probably become the

highest paid player in europe when you take into consideration both his renumeration package in the sponsorship deals with people of signed as well. now let's take you to australia, where there was an epic five set battle between british number one jack draper and home favourite aleksandar vukic. draper won through but now has a tough battle ahead of him, facing spanish super star carlos alcaraz in the fourth round. this was draper's third consecutive five setter. he was two sets to one down against the australian vukic, but dug deep to win the fourth set in a tie break and force a decider. there was little to separate the two in the fifth, but draper held his nerve to move into the last 16 at the first attempt in melbourne. fellow brit jacob fearnley was unable tojoin draper in the fourth round. despite an impressive performance, the british number three, playing in his first overseas grand slam, lost in straight sets to world number two alex zverev.
6:41 pm
that covers the british men, and as we mentioned, jack draper plays spaniard carlos alcaraz next — alex fletcher takes a look at his progression into the fourth round, along with a few of the other big names in the tournament. a man on a mission in melbourne. carlos alcaraz, back on the hunt for a career grand slam and the early signs were positive. despite his opponent hitting back, rhat only served as motivation for the spaniard, who went on to take the fourth set 6—2, sealing his place in the last 16. plenty to love about his third round performance. here to see a ten time champion... third round performance. the crowd firmly on the side of novak djokovic and after racing through the first, he served out the second set to seize control against thomas makatsch and there was still time to finish with a flourish. straight set simplicity for the serbian. his place in the next round secured. a semi—finalist last year,

coco gauff, hoping to go one better this time around, taking the first set 6—4. she soon had a break in the second... but she strikes again. ..and was able to make the most of it. she'll face belinda bencic in the last 16. also through is the defending champion arina sabalenka, getting the better of clara tauson on a good day for the favourites in melbourne. alex fletcher, bbc news. staying in australia, it's been a very different story for england women who've suffered a heavy defeat to the aussies in the third and final one day international. it means australia hold a 6—0 lead in the points based multi format series, so for england to take the ashes home with them, they'll need to win all three of the t20s and the test match, which is looking very unlikely. patrick geary reports. this was a ashes, ashes day. ash gardner batted long and thoughts as to bring england to the brink. this
6:43 pm
tour is already peppered with what if super england they had australia 59-4 if super england they had australia 59—11 and yet could not keep control. 59—1; and yet could not keep control. although known for her exuberance in hobart, gardner duck in where necessary, picking her moments to profit. at england's expense. 0ne necessary, picking her moments to profit. at england's expense. one of the great women's ashes of sentries was completed from gardner's 100th was completed from gardner's100th delivery lifting australia to a total of 308. england chased with purpose at least initially tammy bouma and that's it for brent both mid—50s, but no one could dominate as gardner had, her presence in this match was inescapable even on the boundary she would be centre stage. somehow she was not over the line, but australia nearly are.— but australia nearly are. it's going to be tough _ but australia nearly are. it's going to be tough having a _ but australia nearly are. it's going to be tough having a change - but australia nearly are. it's going to be tough having a change of. to be tough having a change of format will be good for us and i think t20 cricket is one of our best formats and i think that little reset do us some good. we have got to keep believing.—
6:44 pm
to keep believing. believing is one thin , to keep believing. believing is one thing, delivering _ to keep believing. believing is one thing, delivering another, - to keep believing. believing is one thing, delivering another, englandi thing, delivering another, england must win all four remaining matches to recapture the ashes. so the ashes looking out of reach for england after that impressive performance from australia. watching from hobart was the bbc*s henry moeran and alex hartley. so australia, on the brink of retaining the ashes, having won each of the three one day internationals to start this multi—format series. if england were poor in the first couple of matches, they were blown away by the brilliance of australia in this third game here in hobart. ash gardner's first 0di and indeed international 100 enough to set a target north of 300. england couldn't chase it down. world cup winner alex hartley. australia were brilliant. they were, they were absolutely outstanding today. just showing why they are the world's best. i mean, england had a sniff. they had them four down early, but there was a partnership between beth mooney and ash gardner that that set australia up perfectly to accelerate the back end of the innings. and in the first two 0dis, the teams for me, although the victories were massive for australia, the teams were a lot
6:45 pm
closer than it felt today. australia were just world class. i almost feel like though the margin of victory was huge, england didn't do too much wrong. no, it's one of those where england actually kept themselves in the game for as long as possible. and then there was an unbelievable catch from phoebe litchfield to dismiss danni wyatt. and that changed the game. and you often say in white ball cricket that moments of brilliance do change the game. and it did. and it was one of those where you look at the scorecard and it's a massive victory for australia. and they are on the brink of retaining the ashes yet again. but today australia were just better than england. a brief word on that match from ash gardner. you spoke about phoebe litchfield, ash gardner. what a day for her. what a day. i mean, it couldn't have gone better, could it, for ash gardner. it was one of those that you see on the boundary edge. you flick it over and you dive full length back in. the best women's, the best catch in women's cricket i've ever seen. without a doubt. 0utstanding. women's ashes is now almost australia's. they need just two more points to ensure that they retain
6:46 pm
the trophy. england need to win everything. can they do it? i mean, they're going to have to play better. but t20 almost brings that that margin closer together, doesn't it? you almost think anything can happen in a t20. so can england win the t20 series 3—0? they're going to have to play exceptionally well. it's not impossible. but you do feel like it's australia's to win now. yeah, australia look like they are set fair to win this women's ashes series. they were brilliant today here in a blustery hobart. ash gardner's day. england will have to head to sydney for the first t20 international. a little bit tail between the legs, perhaps knowing that things have to improve if they stand any chance of getting their hands on the trophy. let's take a quick look at some of the days other sports news stories making the headlines. eliud kipchoge has announced he will race the london marathon in april, attemtping to win it for a record fifth time. the ao—year—old is the most decorated men's marathon runner in history, winning in the british captial from 2015 to 2019. it will be kipchoge's first marathon since he failed to finish at the paris 0lympics.

there was a lucky eagle at the 18th for scot ewen ferguson to give him a one shot lead at the halfway stage of the dubai desert classic. his tee shot bounced off the grandstand, ending up just feet from the hole. ferguson ended the day on 12 under, one shot ahead of new zealand's daniel hillier. in darts, newly crowned world champion luke littler is out of the bahrain darts masters. the defending bahrain champion was knocked out 6—2 by gerwyn price who finished with a tournament record three—dart average of over 115. a back injury has forced england and leicester winger anthony watson to retire from rugby. the 30—year—old made his final appearance for tigers last month, having played just seven times for the club over the past two seasons.
