hello, i'm christian fraser. donald trump has arrived in washington ahead of his inauguration on monday. at a fundraiser tonight in virginia, there is a dinner and firework display for the invited guests, in one of several events scheduled before he takes the oath on monday. but it will all look very different to how it was planned. the temperatures here are due to plummet in the next 2a hours. there is frantic work underway to move the inauguration indoors, with the set now being built in the capitol rotunda. meanwhile, thousands of anti—trump demonstrators have been marching through washington to protest against the policies of this incoming administration. organisers had expected 50,000 people. about 5,000 turned up.

the people's march — it was previously known as the women's march — is much smaller than it was in 2017 when trump first came to power. but according to those who attended, it is now a much more diverse group. it's a nice reminder that, even though we didn't have the numbers in november, that we are not alone. and we shouldn't give up andjust are not alone. and we shouldn't give up and just kind of role in our backs. in two years we can make some more change. i think that we should come out here _ think that we should come out here and — think that we should come out here and voice our concerns, like, _ here and voice our concerns, like. why— here and voice our concerns, like, why do you want people to id like, why do you want people to go back— like, why do you want people to go back home? because you think they doh't— go back home? because you think they don't belong here? america was built— they don't belong here? america was built upon immigrants. am i wrong? — was built upon immigrants. am i wrong? no, but it'sjust because, like, we should have a say in _ because, like, we should have a say in that, _ because, like, we should have a say in that, because we can't just— say in that, because we can't just deport people just because they feel a greater belong here _ the view there of some of those marching today. 0ur north america correspondent john sudworth was watching. well, they are calling this the

people's protest, a broad coalition of groups here on the streets of washington to protest against what they see as donald trump's threat to civil rights, socialjustice, civil rights, social justice, to civil rights, socialjustice, to women's rights, to the protection of minorities and immigrants. america is, few people can doubt now, deeply divided country on the brink of radical change. that is what donald trump promised before his election, it's why his supporters voted for him, and they will be hoping that this time around he is far more prepared to push his agenda through. for his opponents here on the streets, of course, that is precisely what they fear. the decision to bring the inauguration indoors because of the arctic weather forecast is posing some challenges, and when you think back to the scenes of violence that greeted the defeat in 2020, so far these protests have been very, very peaceful. what a

seeing and hearing here in yuma, you've got to keep in mind that in this county, donald trump won by some 20 percentage points over harris. so there is excitement. a few people saying that they are apprehensive, but people have been speaking about immigration as an important factor for them. we'rejust about as an important factor for them. we're just about three miles away from the us — mexico border. underthe miles away from the us — mexico border. under the biden administration at times, particularly in 2003, for example, they did see an increase, times record levels, of illegal migrant crossings at the border. that has since fallen considerably since president biden put into place executive actions. but when i've been speaking to people saying, concerned about those mass deportation raids? they say yes, we are latinos, but we are here, of course, with papers, and that's not such a big concern. another issue for them really has been the economy. this is largely an agricultural community. a lot of people working on farms here. they are less likely than the average american voter to
