4:00 pm
here. let me the big screen here. let me just tell you a little bit of what has been said. they said that the hostages are going to meet theirfamily soon. that the hostages are going to meet their family soon. they say that they will give them and their families are busy. say that they will give them and theirfamilies are busy. he has asked people not to spread fake news about what is happening, unfoldingjust fake news about what is happening, unfolding just now. he said our hearts are with the rest of the hostages, of course, this is three israeli hostages being released today. three of 33 being released over the next six weeks. some people still don't know which states they will be able to come home. he also was talking about hamas and particularly about that delay that we saw this morning where the ceasefire were supposed to start at 8:30am. it was delayed, and didn't happen until 11:15am this morning. they were saying that hamas must respect the timelines in the next days of the ceasefire. today, he said, they didn't.
4:01 pm
circling around to talk once again about the hostages, he says the three are protected, they will meet their mother soon, in minutes. he was also addressing the 33. we don't know for sure the identities of the 33. we do of three of them. but there are still 30 due to be released in the next six weeks whose identities we don't know for sure. but the belief is that not all of those 30 are alive. the expression they have used before now is that most of them are believed to be alive. they were saying there that how many of the 33 are alive, many we will not give a number. that was the latest update from the idf, the israel defense forces, being listened to intently by people here in the square. as we continue to watch these live pictures, really, these pictures, really, these pictures notjust in in israel, but watched around the world as the process continues these
4:02 pm
hostages back to their families. presidentjoe biden was speaking on his last day as president of the united states of america and commander—in—chief, we had that statement by the israeli defense forces saying that that the three hostages have crossed the three hostages have crossed the border and are currently on their way, this came out a few minutes ago. to an initial reception point in southern israel where they will undergo an initial medical assessment. as we have been mentioning, two of the hostages were known to have been injured when they were seized at gunpoint in southern israel, on that dreadful day of october the 7th, we have no idea, although
4:03 pm
there will be information judging by how the other releases have been managed, information will be given at some point. including by the hostages themselves about their ordeal, they are said to be on their way. they may now be in that place, in this kibbutz in southern israel for an initial medical assessment. there have been reports of their being family members there, but we have to wait and get confirmation of that. to remind you again, three israeli hostages, romi gonen, emily damari, and doron steinbrecher, 31 years old. the first three to be released in this hard—fought deal to get the hostages home. bright lights there, as you say, the cameras are searching, trying to keep an eye on that moment to see when the helicopters lift off. it is hard to see know exactly what is happening in the dark
4:04 pm
now. everyone is staring in the darkness. a confirmation that the darkness for these three women has had now ended. they are now safely in israel and they are now being taken care of by medical teams and will be taken for more specialised care to the hospital in tel aviv. asi as i was describing earlier, this is a place that people gravitate towards, notjust this is a place that people gravitate towards, not just at moments like this. you will often see people walking towards the square, they will be looking at the names and images. at hostage families come here as well, many of them want to talk about the ordeal that they have been through. they want to keep that names and faces, the stories, the identities of their loved ones in the public eye. for many of
4:05 pm
them, they firmly and strongly believe that that helps contribute to the international pressure for hostage releases. so we have been meeting and speaking to various people today to mothers, cousins, brothers, who come here for comfort and solace sometimes. but they also come here to tell their stories and to hope that their stories and to hope that their loved ones will be part of this release at some point. 33 hostages are being released in phase one of this agreement. specific groups of people, women, female soldiers this time around as well, male soldiers are not included in this particular group. they will be released at a later stage of the ceasefire if it holds. people who need medical attention and care, the elderly, which is described in
4:06 pm
this case as men over the age of 50. so there is a list that has been in circulation, it has not been confirmed but it is in circulation. so there are families who are in a position where they can have a pretty strong belief that in the next six weeks, if things go to plan, they will see their loved ones. but one of the most difficult blows, as we were hearing from the admiral of the israeli defense forces, is that israeli defense forces, is that israeli authorities do not know for sure which of those 33 are alive or dead. they say that they believe that many, most, are alive, but i think there is also an expectation that even in the next six weeks, even in the first phase of this deal, at some .i of these moments of release will involve the handover not of life hostages, but of the bodies of hostages. that is something that we will
4:07 pm
wait and watch as phase one of this deal moves through, as people hope it will move into phase ii and phase three with an eventual end to the war and an eventual end to the war and an eventual end to the war and an eventual reconstruction of gaza. we are still showing you these life pictures here of southern israel, you can see the various vehicles moving about there. we know that this is where the women have been taken to, that is the focus of the action at the moment before they are then moved to hospital, where they will be cared for and they will spend on individual amount of time in medical care. i remember speaking here in this glare at the time of the last hostage release, to one of the medical staff who was actually involved in helping hostages when they had been released. and he was really fascinating, just giving an insight into what people face when they come out, in
4:08 pm
some cases, he says if they have been held underground internals that has had an impact on things like their eyesight, for example. people's strength, people's physical strength, people's physical strength, people's physical strength, people's levels of nourishment, levels of energy, there are physical things to consider. but also on the mental health side of things, so much to consider as well. i remember it was particularly striking at the time, he said that when hostages are released, they come out to a world that suddenly knows their name, knows theirface, and people are desperate to see them. they couldn't possibly walk down the street without being recognised, without people coming up to them wanting to embrace them and talk to them. and at the end of a grueling and ordeal in captivity, that is often something that people do not want, they would find it very hard to handle. so there are lots of different things that are put into place both for the mental and physical health of those hostages. and as we
4:09 pm
continue to watch these life pictures, that will be something that we will start to see in the next couple of hours. particularly when they are taken to hospital at the beginning of that process are taken to hospital at the beginning of that process towards rehabilitation. it will towards rehabilitation. it will start to happen.— start to happen.— start to happen. yes, this intensive _ start to happen. yes, this intensive personal- start to happen. yes, this i intensive personal moments start to happen. yes, this intensive _ start to happen. yes, this intensive personal- start to happen. yes, this i intensive personal moments which they have to share with which they have to share with the world. while we have been the world. while we have been on air at the idf has now on air at the idf has now released footage of three released footage of three mothers sitting in the mothers sitting in the reception centre, we are seeing reception centre, we are seeing the pictures outside, but they the pictures outside, but they are there somewhere, the are there somewhere, the mothers, and the head of the mothers, and the head of the idf's mothers, and the head of the idf*s men's power director is idf's mothers, and the head of the idf*s men's power director is sitting with them and showing sitting with them and showing them images of their daughters them images of their daughters as they are being released. i as they are being released. i am sure it we will get these am sure it we will get these images and be able to share images and be able to share them with you on bbc news of it them with you on bbc news of it that three mothers sitting that three mothers sitting
4:10 pm
together and just watching the together and just watching the images that are being shared with the idf. this is confirming that the mothers are there, these images were
4:11 pm
confirming that the mothers are then families mages were confirming that the mothers are then families again. were confirming that the mothers are then families again. so re confirming that the mothers are then families again. so they their families again. so they want tojust keep, their families again. so they want to just keep, to their families again. so they want tojust keep, to minimise that kind of pressures on the hostages as they are returned to their old lives. judging by these images, and this released photograph of the mothers, the three mothers of three women may now have met their daughters. and then after about an hour and daughters. and then after about an hourand some daughters. and then after about an hour and some medical checks, they will then be reunited with the rest of their families. you can imagine what an emotional roller coaster for the three hostages emerging literally into the light, into their old lives again. so it may be... this is confirmation, the that it will be at least an hour. we havejust received the that it will be at least an hour. we have just received the statement from the idf spokesperson, he said that mike he said that they are in safe
4:12 pm
hands. that seems to be more details about exactly what we are expecting to see in the next hour or so as the first steps in the new chapter of three hostages lives, they are no longer hostages, they are ex—hostages, but there hostage ordeal will dominate their lives. for some time to come. we have got some fresh pictures that we can assure you now. these are pictures from inside gaza of that moment that these three women were handed over, new pictures, you can see that the huge crowds there around the huge crowds there around the red cross vehicles, you can see armed men, eat you can see that green headbands and their faces covered and the weapons in the air. and you can adjust to make out in that crowd the three women being handed over
4:13 pm
and being transferred into the vehicles. slightly clearer picture than we were saying earlier. it is basically the pictures that were being shown in the square here and you can see those vehicles passing through those crowds of people. you can see people going right up you can see people going right up to the windows of the vehicles with the mobile phones, filming. you can see the high visibility vests and the high visibility vests and the members of the red cross. that is how these things happen. that is the choreography of these moments. where hamas handed the hostages over to the red cross, and we saw those new pictures just there, and what we now know is that those three hostages are at now in the hands of the israeli military, they are very soon to be, if not already, reunited with their families, with their mothers, who have been waiting for this moment
4:14 pm
for a70 days. 15 months of devastating war in gaza. the devastating war in gaza. the devastating impact here in israel of the events of october the 7th. and we see today for three families at least, a brief moment ofjoy in the centre of that. just showing you these pictures again so you can get a closer look at that moment of handover in gaza. we are also, we have been trained you life pictures and we will continue to show you life pictures of the scene in southern israel, where they have been received and where they will soon be flown by helicopter to the hospital in the suburbs here in tel aviv. i know at some point we will also see, as we did the last time there was a cease fire, images of those very emotional reunions. cameras in general are not allowed in, but what tends to happen is the israeli
4:15 pm
government, the government press office, tends to film these moments and circulate them around. we saw last time round some really extremely emotional moments where parents and children... last time, children were released, parents and children being brought back together again. and children being brought back togetheragain. so and children being brought back together again. so i would expect, if not in the coming hours, then certainly in the next day or two, that images of those reunions will also start to feel our screens as well. extraordinary footage we have just shown. it was hard to make out where the hostages wear. hamas fighters with their weapons in the air, with their green bandannas, that is certain to provoke comment and criticism in israel. 15 months after a punishing war where israeli bombardment has gone on
4:16 pm
night and day, operations on the ground, from the air, and still hamas, this is clearly sending a signalfrom hamas that they are not defeated, even after all that they can mount a show of strength to israel, to its rivals. there is still very much a presence there. of course, israel has been categorical that hamas will not be allowed to rule the gaza strip. but there you see today, with their green bandannas, this moment where they really wanted... this is not something beyond the gaze of the cameras and a discrete handover. you see the red to best serve the international community, the red cross, trying as they might to maintain the dignity. they have been thrown into this process being the ones with the special responsibilities under the geneva convention to care for
4:17 pm
prisoners when they are held in captivity, as they are released, released from the hands of the hamas fighters. 0f hands of the hamas fighters. of course, we heard from the qatari government spokesperson earlier in the day saying that hamas is committed to this deal, that the mediators, the qataris, the egyptians, the americans, will be working from their coordination office which has been set up in cairo. they will also have a presence on the ground in the gaza strip to do everything possible to ensure both sides adhere to the terms of this three—part process which we are seeing unfold is now in its first hours. the first humanitarian phase as three hostages come home. you should see shortly, annie,... palestinians are there waiting to welcome their loved one times. israel said it
