90 palestinian prisoners are also being released under phase one of the ceasefire deal. as soon as the ceasefire was announced, aid began to move across the border, with up to 600 trucks a day expected to cross over. thousands of displaced people are on the move in gaza, trying to return home — some for the first time in more than a year. our other main story this hour — these are live pictures of the donald trump rally ahead of tomorrow's inauguration in washington. hello, i'm lauren taylor. three female israeli hostages released by hamas have arrived at a hospital on the outskirts of tel aviv where they have been reunited with their families. the israeli government has released this footage of doron steinbrecher, romi gonen and dual british—israeli emily damari being reunited with theirfamilies. they appear to be in reasonable health.

if the ceasefire holds — and that seems to be the case so far — around 30 other hostages will be released in the coming days. in return, israel is due to begin releasing palestinian prisoners — we have not seen any pictures of that yet. there are also agreements about the return of palestinians to their homes in gaza, an increase in aid deliveries, and a withdrawal of israeli forces from gaza. deputy director general of health, dr sefi mendelovich, has been giving an update about the released hostages health. not long ago emily damari, doron steinbrecher and romi gonen arrived at this hospital. all of us are rated overjoyed to see them come home to us. the preparation for receiving them at the hospital included them at the hospital included the formation of a physical and mental health environment that is extensive, compassionate and professional. the meticulous planning for caring for them at

with the utmost care by hospital staff. this is of course a complex situation both emotionally and medically for those returning to israel and for theirfamilies. these those returning to israel and for their families. these are a complex time for families of all the captives and for the israeli people as a whole. both for israel and abroad. alongside the excitement in the sense that the returning are in inseparable part of our larger families we implore you to respect their privacy and dignity. the israeli people, the ministry of health and the health care system personnel are elated to see the hostages come home and are doing everything we possibly can to give them comprehensive, personalized and compassionate care. with help from the bottom of our hearts to see all the captives come home. good evening. i am excited and

very— good evening. i am excited and very happy— good evening. i am excited and very happy to tell you that this— very happy to tell you that this evening the three captives that were released or arrived here — that were released or arrived here at— that were released or arrived here at the medical center. and happy to report that they are in stable condition. that allows us and them to focus on what is the most important thing for now, reuniting with their families. they are reunited with their families and we will continue to monitor their clinical condition. this will take a few more days until we complete all the examinations that are needed. and treat whatever we find within the work that we will perform. i stand here with a lot of people around me for that this is not the first time that we have received hostages here, i have to tell you, this is a very emotional moment for all of us here
9:05 pm
and for everybody around us. we feel privileged to be the ones that get this tremendous honor to treat those hostages and we will continue to stay here and be prepared until the last hostage returns to israel. thank you. the pictures we saw earlier came at the end of the day was striking developments. this is the moment the first hostages to be released were transferred from captivity to the red cross. this happened in gaza city. at this point we can only catch a fleeting glimpse of them but they appear to be able to walk unaided as they get into the red cross vehicle. appearing to be armed hamas fighters surrounding them. those pictures emerged sometime after the exchange of taken

place but details were made public. this is how israelis reacted when they heard the news in tel aviv. this is the moment that the mother of the three hostages learned they been handed over to the red cross. meanwhile across gaza many of the hundreds of thousands of people who were displaced by the fighting had begun returning to their homes. many of which have been destroyed. these pictures show people walking back into the ja ball your area, which was targeted many times in israeli air strike that israel says it was targeting militants. our international editor, jeremy bowen, takes us through all today's developments — as after 15 months of war — the ceasefire in gaza begins. in the centre of gaza city, a show of force by hamas, as they handed the hostages over to the international red cross. in the white vehicles, romi gonen, doron steinbrecher and emily damari, a british—israeli dual citizen, were starting
9:07 pm
their journey back to freedom. the men and guns were there to send a signal that whatever israeli says or wants, hamas is still in charge in gaza. that sight will infuriate israelis. israeli tv showed a glimpse of one of the hostages in a pink top, while the whole country was watching and waiting. cheering. this is the family of romi gonen. this day has been a long time coming. the families and their supporters have campaigned constantly for a deal to get the hostages back. at first light, thousands of palestinians in gaza began trying to walk home. this fragile ceasefire started almost three hours late. with zero trust on either side, israel continued its attacks here in khan younis, as it waited for the names of the women being released. gaza's civil defence,

run by hamas, said 19 more palestinians were killed by israel during the delay. hamas joined the celebrations, trying to claim some kind of victory. the israelis have destroyed the offensive power hamas used to attack them 15 months ago, but the american say hamas has nearly as many new recruits as israel has killed. after so much bloodshed, celebratory gunfire did not make jana flinch. translation: may god have mercy on the oppressed and those - who have passed and pity on us who survived. and, god willing, everyone will return home. this celebration in khan younis was filmed by a trusted palestinian cameraman working for the bbc. israel does not let international journalists into gaza to report freely. just over the border in israel is the site of the nova music festival, where hamas killed more than 380 people on the 7th
9:09 pm
of october and took a0 hostage. this weekend, with a ceasefire coming, many israelis made their own pilgrimages, moving quietly around the photos and memorials to those who were killed. a short distance away is another memorial — the festivalgoers' cars, hundreds of them destroyed in the attack. israelis here said they wanted a deal in which all the hostages were swapped for palestinian prisoners at the same time. that's because they believed the war is going to resume. they said it was unavoidable while hamas still has armed men in gaza. they want to kill us, they want to finish us. so, what is the good questions? look. look! this is the answer, this is what they want. can we live like this? no.
9:10 pm
a ceasefire, by definition, is a compromise between enemies, but since the october attacks, prime minister netanyahu has talked repeatedly about getting all the hostages back through total victory, the complete annihilation of hamas as a political and military force. but right now, that is not what the israeli people are being offered. tonight, thousands gathered in the square in tel aviv where the hostage campaign has based itself since the first weeks of the war. chereing. it's a night for hope and relief — in israel and gaza — and some trepidation about what might lie ahead. jeremy bowen, bbc news, tel aviv. i spoke to our correspondent, jonah fisher, who is at sheba hospital on the outskirts of tel aviv, where the released hostages are now and he told us more about the atmosphere there. quite a moment when the helicopter arrived here and then vehicles drove them into the building behind me.
9:11 pm
obviously, the media is being kept at arms length. in the last few minutes we have had footage released by the israeli authorities of what is been going on inside the hospital behind me. really, really emotional scenes of ronnie, doran and emily being reunited, not just with their families ——romi but of course their mothers went to meet them as they emerge out of gaza but their friends as well. hugging, lots of singing, crying. this has been a very emotional day here at the hospital. they will have been preparations for what they go through it next to try and recover from the emotional and the physical burden that they've had in the last 15 months or so. yes. there are clearly physical injuries, which are already being addressed.
9:12 pm
we saw emily damari, the british— israeli national with bandages on one hand. we know she was shot as she was taken by hamas on october seven, 2023 it appears that almost immediately she came out of gaza, that was addressed by medics down there and no doubt will be looked at again here. we also know that romi has most likely that injuries which need to be addressed. in terms of general health, all three of them were walking and they seemed clearly in buoyant mood so that in terms of what this means psychologically, there will be psychologists available here to work with them. they will have to begin to try and address and work through the trauma they will no doubt experience of the last 15 months being held captive in gaza. possibly in tunnels, being hidden away. we don't know yet how they've been treated by their hamas captors.
9:13 pm
but for the accounts of other hostages perhaps not very well. almost certainly have had a miserable time for that period in captivity. there will be physical and psychological things that will be addressed by the team here at the sheba medical facility for that one of the biggest hospitals in the middle east. they will have all the special is that they need on hand to start the process of coming to terms with what happened to them. these the first three hostages to be released, tell us about the process now and how long this will take. it's a complicated process and in many phases. effectively the way it works is a group of israeli hostages are released and then in return palestinian prisoners and detainees are released. they have 90 palestinian prisoners
9:14 pm
being released, each of the israeli hostages that were released there will be a series of releases over the following week. this is a six week temporary cease—fire. during that period they will be 33 hostages released by hamas if everything goes according to plan. they are children, women, the elderly, the second ——sick the injured foot that we're not expecting all of the 3312 survived this and to still be alive. israel is being prepared for the fact that live hostages being released is likely that in some of the releases that follow it is going to be the bodies of israeli hostages being returned as well as hostages who have survived. some of this is clearly difficult for the israelis because these are some palestinian prisoners released as people they would view as serious potential risk to israel. talk us through how people are receiving that side of things. the concept of the prisoner exchange.
9:15 pm
this is something which israel has gone through in the past put the release of a soldier who was captured and held in gaza and then the police led to a release of more than a thousand prisoners, many of whom went on to commit crimes. indeed sinwar became the leader of hamas in gaza. people here are acutely aware that in return for getting these hostages back they are releasing people who have done bad things to israelis, people on the long list, not people released today but set to be released. there are people that have murdered israelis, they had planted bombs in blown up multiple israelis. that is the other side of this, the price which is being paid for each one of these hostages. the potential risk for the future, if you like, that israel is creating by letting these people but

the record of violence free. as we've heard, among those released is british israeli dual national emily damari. the 28—year old's family have roots in beckenham in south east london. our special correspondent lucy manning has been speaking to some of her family. here in north london there has been somejoy amongst the family and supporters of emily damari that she has been released, tempered by the fact that there are still hostages being held for been gathering to celebrate her release and also to call for the release of other hostages. i'm joined by a cousin of emily damari, tony moss. tony, just give me your reaction to the release of emily this afternoon, this evening. we're just overjoyed. a loss for words. can't quite believe it. didn't think it was going to happen. we just can't quite believe it but also sad.
9:17 pm
this isjust the beginning, we need to get the other hostages out. we're happy today for emily and mandy and the family and the other hostages been released. this isjust the beginning. we've got to get all of them out. what does it mean to you after this long ordeal that emily is now home? oh, just a huge relief, huge relief. it's been anxiety for a71 days, a huge anxiety that we carry around with us. we can let that go in respect to emily but we got to get the other hostages out. i know i keep saying that but we do. what were your emotions when you heard the news and saw the pictures? i broke down when i saw the pictures. i saw the pictures only once emily wasn't the hands of her mother mandy. you saw how fragile it was when they were in gaza surrounded by hamas terrorists and mobs. that was extremely fragile,
9:18 pm
anything could've happened. she was in the hands of a mother back over the border where she should have been ventures huge relief. i broke down in tears. that photo of emily smiling with her mum, mandy. absolutely amazing. you saw she's got some fingers missionary. ——missing. she was shot on the day she was taken. they shot her dog dead and shot herfingers. she still smiling. she's an amazing spirit, emily. it may be hope for the other hostages and their families. what has been the discussion in the family chat group with mandy? there's only wanting under discussion, this morning first thing mandy sent a message for the family, she packed her bag and she's waiting to hear where and when. but she won't believe it until she's got her in her arms. she refused to believe until it happened. what was the message when emily was released? she's here, she's here. mandy's got a special thing with her daughter emily
9:19 pm
about a hug for a0 seconds for that because it takes a0 seconds for the dopamine to be released. she was just waiting for that hug for a71 days. that's a long time. we need to hug the other hostages, and get them out. for you and yourfamily tonight a bit of relief, a lot of relief. huge relief. huge relief for us. what have the last month, more than a year felt like? hugely stressful for the anxiety, stress and turmoil. ending for us now in respect to emily. but not for those other families. bring them home. what will your message be to mandy, to emily and matt family whatsapp group this evening? working to carry on fighting. all the people you see around you, there are so many people to thank for the tireless work that they do putting ribbons balloons, singing at spurs,
9:20 pm
talking to politicians, writing to politicians, there's so much work to be done. we will continue to do that until all those hostages are delivered home. those pictures that emily was and it seemed on surface pretty good spirits. it's just the start. who knows what mental condition she in. but she's alive, she is smiling. this is the beginning and thank god she is home. i have no idea what condition she's really end for that that's why she's been taken to hospital and i'm sure they will take good care of her and give hope to all those other families. some really positive emotions felt by emily damari's relations and supporters here who have been out with yellow balloons, yellow ribbons, been at spurs matches with that these are the first three hostages to be released and the hope here from all the supporters is that there will be more. lucy manning reporting.

9:26 pm
now overnight tonight, where we keep any breaks in the cloud, expect a frosty develops. there could be a few icy surfaces to take you into monday morning. there'll be some mist around as well, and maybe a few patches of light rain working into west scotland and northern ireland as well. 0ur weather over the next few days comes from this area of low pressure, it is very weak to the north of scotland, and it will push a couple of weak weather fronts across the uk at times. and so these fronts will bring zones of slightly thicker cloud, a few patches of light rain around then here and there for monday. a lot of cloud around. still quite misty. a few breaks in the cloud, perhaps north east scotland having the best of these. and for many it's another cold day. but for northern ireland, west scotland once again it 0n into tuesday's forecast and again, we've got a couple of zones of rain across the uk, so there will be some wet weather around. between these, though probably a better chance of seeing a few cloud breaks and a little glimmer of sunshine at times. but essentially our weather is quiet for the next few days. however, across the other side of the atlantic, the same isn't true, because here we get an exceptionally strong jet stream form with winds of 265
9:27 pm
miles an hour. i think this is the strongest jet i've ever seen, and it will blow aeroplanes across the atlantic incredibly quickly. expect some very short flight times then between the us and london. at an exceptionally powerful area of low pressure. this one here, at its peak in the early hours of friday to the west of the uk, out to sea, the winds will probably reach well in excess of 100 miles an hour. now this is an example of a weather bomb. that's where pressure falls 2a hectopascals in 2a hours. this storm system is much more powerful with pressure falls of 60 odd hectopascals in the same time. so we're looking at some very strong winds around for friday. the peak of the storm may welljust be past. however, it looks like we'll still have severe gales around friday, so we may need some warnings over the next few days.
