3:40 pm
battling on with dialysis twice a week. at the beginning of december, he suffered severe pain in his leg in the middle of the night. he was in agony, sol called nhs direct, 111. we were told that they would get a gp out to us, which they did about six o'clock in the morning. but she was also concerned that it might be dvt as well, and so she said, because of that concern, that i needed to ring for an ambulance. caroline was told it could be a four—hour wait. if only it was just four hours. at one point, i was told it would be at least another eight hours. i was aware, in my head, that that would not be before one in the morning. caroline didn't feel she could wait that long, so with the help of her son, she got peter to here, the university hospital of wales in cardiff, bu around 9pm. it had now been around 1a, almost 15 hours since she'd originally called 999. in that time, no ambulance had arrived. figures published this morning by the welsh ambulance service
3:41 pm
show that, in december, less than half of the most serious, life—threatening cases were seen within eight minutes. the last time the target was achieved averaging 65% of patients within the timeframe was back in 2020, 52 months ago. a&e waiting time figures for november were also released today. they show that the numbers waiting 12 hours or more was the second highest on record. wales' health secretary, jeremy miles, said that the nhs was facing challenging circumstances in latter—day's figures don't yet reflect the investment that the labour government was making to reduce the longest waits. peter was eventually diagnosed with sepsis, and he died in the early hours of saturday morning. the last kind of conversation i had with him was when he was just in agony. in a statement, the welsh ambulance service expressed their sincere condolences

to the family of peter towndrow, adding that poor ambulance response times are a symptom of a much broader systemwide pressures. a spokesperson for cardiff and vale university health board said that they were unable to comment on individual patient care, adding that our thoughts are with the family of mr towndrow at this difficult time. caroline knew peter's health had suffered, but those hours waiting played a part in how things came to end. if he'd just got in there earlier, he could have been made comfortable. he shouldn't have to... he shouldn't have to die in that state. that's not fair. tomos morgan, bbc news. us president donald trump is sending 15—hundred troops to the mexican border to boost security, as he moves to crack

down on illegal immigration. the news came after mr trump gave his first television interview since re—entering the white house. our north america correspondent merlyn thomas has the details. mr president. thank you. welcome back. thank you. donald trump began his interview with fox news speaking about his favourite topic — immigration. this was a gross miscarriage of common sense to allow people to come in. this is notjust south america. this isn't you know, we talk venezuela. that's a big abuser. but these are countries from iran, congo, the countries that you don't even think of. the congo has emptied their prisons out into the united states. for him, it was an opportunity to repeat many of the unverified claims he's made before. it follows an announcement that the pentagon is deploying more than 1,500 troops to the us—mexico border to beef up resources, as well as providing air support to help deport undocumented migrants from states like california and texas. while he's going full speed ahead with the executive orders cracking down on illegal immigration, the president has also been on the defensive standing by his decision

to pardon nearly 1,600 of the january 6th rioters. why did they get a pardon? a number of reasons. number one, they were in there for there for three and a half years, a long time, and in many solitary confinement, treated like nobody*s ever been treated so badly. they were treated like the worst criminals in history. and you know what they were there for? they were protesting the vote because they knew the election was rigged. president trump's first week has been incredibly busy, and he's not done yet. in a few days, he'll visit california, a state deeply affected by wildfires that are still raging. some of the wealthiest, most powerful people lost their homes, and it looked like our country was helpless. this fire was just raging. and then it would catch to another era.

another area, another area. there was nothing. it took a week and a half and i've never seen anything like it. we looked so weak. trump supporters have been pleased with their president's actions so far, and they're not done hearing from him yet. as fox tv presenter sean hannity revealed, there's a part two of this interview still to come later on thursday. a reporter told us what's happening at the border and the mexican government's response. the border is closed and a state of emergency and nobody is crossing about thousands of migrants are stranded after trump closed down the cbp one entry programme. this is where hundreds of thousands of migrants could schedule an appointment to make their asylum case. now they are stranded with uncertainty. this is ad 1500 troops are making their way of the border to put up their way of the border to put up physical barriers as well as mass deportation flight is looming. a lot of panic and
3:46 pm
uncertainty at the border as many people are uncertain where to go next. the mexican government hasn't taken these talks to leg things well. the president of mexico said on wednesday that the foreign affairs minister and the newly appointed us secretary of state have had their first telephone conversation, which largely focused on immigration and security matters. it was supposedly cordial and part of an ongoing conversation, however the mexican president has said that they will collaborate with the us, but they were not subordinate to it. this is a key point she has emphasised many times. it is also really important to note that mexico has not agreed to jump*s remaining mexico policy, where asylum seekers must wait in mexico while their asylum is processed. just like many other of trump's policies, mexico

needs to be in agreement and at the moment that is still in question. this year's 0scar nominations have been revealed. amongst the nominees are ariana grande and cynthia ervio for their roles in the smash hit wicked. however, the musical adaptation missed out on a nomination for best adapted screenplay. emilia perez was another film that dominated the nominations, securing 13 nominations — including best picture and cinematography. that's the most nominations for a foreign film
