schools and offices have been closed and there's been severe disruption to transport — with one in five flights from airports cancelled. scotrail has said there will be no trains at all in scotland until at least midday tomorrow. the storm saw two rare red weather warnings — meaning a danger to life — for northern ireland and scotland. the final extreme warning was lifted within the last hour, but an amber warning for high winds still covers scotland, northern england and wales — and there's a yellow warning for large areas across the uk. in a moment we'll hear from our correspondents in the four nations, and chris fawkes will tell us just why the storm has been so powerful. but first to chris page in county mayo in the republic of ireland. well, the worst is over, but we are still feeling the impact here in the town of west port. the power has

strong test wind was in the republic of ireland. the strongest wind gust recorded there. in kil0wen the gust here was 90mph, the strongest for over a quarter of a century. what has caused this is a phenomenon called a sting jet. here is storm eowyn, this conveyor belt of moisture rising up, produced this area of cloud and rain. now some of the rain in this cloud tip here started to fall into some exceptionamly dry air, five kilometres up and that caused the rain to evaporate. that cools the atmosphere, makes the air dense and that air rushes down. this is known as the sting jet and brought the 140mph gusts to west of ireland. after the 140 was recorded, the

sensor that recorded that went off line. we don't know what happened to it. we have seen the system working across northern ireland and scotland, bringing ferocious winds. sting jets were discovered after the storm in 1987. storm eowyn was powered by a very strong jet stream. the jet stream is becoming stronger because of climate change, so every one degree of warming of global average temperatures, the jet stream has increased by about 2%. it doesn't sound like much, but it's increasing. and the jet stream is the thing that is driving these weather systems. so, a strongerjet stream will mean more intense storms. storm eowyn has been an exceptionally dangerous storm and in the last hour we continue to see
