camps and has become a symbol of nazi germany's genocide of 6 millionjews. 1millionjews and more than 100,000 non—jews died at the site between 1940—1945. marian turski, who's 98, is a very symbolic choice of speaker for this event. he survived the lodz ghetto as a teenager and was deported to auschwitz, where his brother and father were murdered. translation: it is absolutely i understandable, if not downright obvious that people, that the media turn to us, to those who survived,
5:31 pm
so that we shared with them our memories. however, there's always been a very small minority of us, us who went through all those selections positively. that number itself was very little. and those who lived to see freedom, there were hardly, hardly none.
5:32 pm
so few, and now there is only a handful. such a small bevy. that is why i believe that our thoughts should now go towards this huge majority, those millions of victims who will never tell us what they experienced, what they felt just because they were consumed by that mass destruction, the shoah.
5:33 pm
marian also read from a letter a poet wrote to her friend before coming to auschwitz where she was killed. the words are so evocative. it read, "i'm going to a very distinct place, a station which is unknown for it is not on any map. there is the sky hanging over the station like a huge black lid." we also heard from tova friedman. she was only five when she and her mother were sent to auschwitz—birkenau, in her words a "very terrified" girl in a dark cattle car holding on to her mother's hand. she spoke at the ceremony still and warned of dark forces and rampant anti—semitism spreading
5:34 pm
across the world. she was very vivid with her words. i thought that we all have to die, that it was normal if you were a jewish child, you have to die. i wasn't even sure what jewish was because i never saw any celebrations, but death, child, jewish seemed a normal thought. i knew nothing about partisans saving jews from ghettos and camps. i knew nothing about the 1944 warsaw uprising, nor of the allies and the d—day, nor of the invasion of normandy. at that time, we were victims
5:35 pm
in a moral vacuum, but today, however, we have an obligation. not only to remember, which is very, very important, but also to warn and to teach that hatred only begets more hatred, killing more killing. instead, our revenge has been to build a strong jewish country and raise our families in peace. many of you here, i saw, have your wonderful families with you just as i do. 80 years after liberation, the world is again in crisis.
5:36 pm
0urjewish—christian values have been overshadowed worldwide by prejudice, fear, suspicion and extremism. and the rampant anti—semitism that is spreading among the nations is shocking. that was tova friedman. i have interviewed her and her courage, hurt resilience and experience are remarkable. he could see their it absolutely shines through and it was absolutely shines through and it was a privilege to interview her. one of the things it was so important was to hear her testimony today. that's what they want to the ceremony to be about today, to be about the survivors and also about the victims. joining me now is my colleague tim franks,

gunfire can still be heard in parts of the city of goma in the east of the democratic republic of congo, which m23 rebels are in the process of capturing. that comes alongside reports that the border with neighbouring rwanda has been closed. it follows claims made at a un security council meeting by the us, france and the uk that forces from rwanda had been supporting the m23 rebel group as it advanced into the centre of goma, with the rebels now claiming they control the city. 0ur africa correspondent barbara plett usher has been following the movements of the m23 rebel forces over the past 24 hours. the m23 has been advancing on goma amid intense fighting in the past couple of days, actually, and in the past 24 hours, the rebel group says that it has taken control of the city. it says that it is currently

at the city's stadium, registering weapons from surrendering congolese soldiers, who it had issued an ultimatum for them to disarm by a certain time. and it says at this point it's doing that and has posted photographs to back up what it's saying. we also have a report or a notice separately from the uruguay contingent of the un peacekeeping force saying that, indeed, some congolese soldiers have surrendered. but at the same time, the congolese government has issued a statement denying that the m23 controls the city, saying that the congolese government is still in control of the main strategic points, including the airport, and that the m23 is on the outskirts. so we don't have full confirmation yet of who exactly is in control. but the m23 is very much in the area. and as we have been reporting, the big concern, the most immediate concern, of course, is the fate of civilians, because there are about a million people living in the city. but then nearly that same number of people who've been displaced by the war in eastern congo,

who were living in very big camps around goma and have been on the move since the m23 started to advance. and so we have, as you said, not heard any reports of a major bloodshed so far, and that is something that is of great concern to all the authorities watching. seven members of one of scotland's biggest child sex abuse rings have been given orders for life long restriction. three victims under the age of 13 were subjected to horrific sexual abuse and violence in a glasgow drug den over a seven—year period. police said the children had suffered "unimaginable abuse", with the offences including rape, attempted murder and assault.

this, of course, was one of scotland's biggest ever child sex abuse rings. the seven convicted abusers aged between 40—51. ian 0wens, elaine lanerie, lesley williams, paul brannan, scott forbes, barry watson and john clarke. now they were convicted in november 2023. the reason for the delay in sentencing is because the judge had to get risk assessments carried out to determine just how big a risk to the public they will be in the future. now all were given orders for lifelong restriction. this is an unusual sentence. let me explain it to you. they will be given minimum terms that they have to serve in prison. that ranges between 8—20 years for each of them individually, depending on their involvement in the crimes. then they can be considered for parole. they will, of course, not necessarily be released, but if they ever are released from prison, they will be under supervision for the rest of their lives. so this is a lifelong sentence that each member of this gang has been given. the abuse took place in the north of glasgow between 2012—2019. two girls and a boy were subject to multiple serious sexual

assaults and violence. some of them made to consume drugs and alcohol in a flat that they called the beasty house because it was crawling with insects. now, four of the group were convicted of attempting to murder one of the girls by trapping her in places including a fridge and a microwave. now, as i said, they have all been given these orders for lifelong restrictions. thejudge paid tribute to the exceptional courage and perseverance of the older children. in this case, he said it was one of the worst examples of human behaviour that he'd ever heard of. "depravity beyond my experience," he said. children's charities and people who work in child protection have said this is amongst the worst cases, if not the worst case they have ever seen. a multi—agency review is taking place, but at least the children can be rest assured that the people that abused them will be under supervision for the rest of their lives. a 14—year—old boy has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of birmingham schoolboy leo ross, who was stabbed in a country park in the city last week. the defendant, who cannot be named due to his age,

so although it's not as disruptive as some recent storms we've seen, we've still got yellow warnings for wind and rain in force across parts of southern england and wales, too. and there's also still plenty of flood warnings, especially towards the south—west. so lots of showers continue through this evening and tonight, particularly across england and wales. some showery rain moving into southern scotland as well. northern scotland seeing a few showers. central scotland perhaps some clearer skies. could be a touch of frost here, but for most of us, frost—free as we start the day tomorrow with the clouds. also some showery rain and some brisk winds, too. low pressure still with us associated with storm erminia, but it's gradually drifting towards the east, so it won't be quite as active compared to monday. again tomorrow, a lot of cloud, a lot of showery rain. you can see that across parts of england, wales, northern scotland could be some showers into the west of northern ireland. some sunny spells, perhaps southern scotland, northern england as well. the strongest of the winds will be down towards the south—west. gusts again near 50 or even 60 mph for here down towards the channel islands as well. lighter winds generally away from the south—west.

top temperatures tomorrow, 7—10 degrees, won't feel particularly warm where you've got a lot of cloud. brisk winds for some of us and outbreaks of showery rain. eventually, the cloud and the rain clear towards the east as we head through into the early hours of wednesday. could be some mist and fog patches as winds fall a little lighter behind that system, and it will be a colder night. so we start wednesday perhaps a touch of grass frost around, especially in the north. now, wednesday, cast your eyes towards the south and there's another developing area of low pressure. could be a named storm, possibly named by the the french met service, because it's bringing most of the wet and windy weather to france, portugal and spain as well.
