along the way, i'll be meeting remarkable people who keep its rich traditions alive... he laughs ..and i'll be discovering how thousands of years of culture have forged this country, and continue to do so. as an art historian, i believe that, to truly understand the secrets of a country's soul... ..you need to immerse yourself in its art. i've come to the city of shenyang, in north—east china, to visit the liaoning provincial museum. it's famous for its collection

of some of china's finest ancient paintings. i've been granted permission to see its greatest treasure — a spellbinding painting from the tang dynasty. it's a stunning work of art that reveals the exquisite fashion of its age. the tang era lasted for almost 300 years, as china's economy boomed and the arts flourished. it was one of the greatest empires in chinese history. the museum's deputy director, dong baohou, is an expert on ancient paintings in china. hello, mr dong. good to see you. ni hao, ni hao. and he's about to show me a silk handscroll

that's at least 1,000 years old, and depicts five noble women and a maid. this rare masterpiece is so fragile, we've only got 15 minutes to film it... ..and only part of it can be unrolled. it's a once—in—a—lifetime encounter.

that we all have — luckily, the museum has a high—quality replica,

in the history of chinese figure—painting... but their thoughts remain a mystery. of the women's facial expressions...

although these women are long gone,

in a studio in a suburb of beijing, costume designer and fashion historian chen shiyu has spent two decades researching and reconstructing

these are just gently swaying and trembling, almost, in the breeze. so, what are some of the techniques and fabrics that you've used?

competing for supremacy that have survived for more than 2,300 years. atjingzhou museum, i've been given special access to one of the tombs most extraordinary discoveries. most extraordinary discoveries. so, this is quite an exclusive. so, this is quite an exclusive. the treasure i'm about the treasure i'm about to see is so delicate... to see is so delicate... ..that, even though it was unearthed decades ago, it's never, ever been it's never, ever been exhibited in public. exhibited in public. and it's kept in the stores... ..where it's protected from

humidity and light, and also dirt from the outside world. this is the earliest known complete formal silk garment in existence in china. and it's so ephemeral and fragile... ..and yet, somehow, this has survived over those centuries pretty much intact. it was one of 13 layers of exquisite clothing wrapped around the body of the tombs occupant, who has become known

as the lady of mashan.

of textile techniques.

a loose—fitting design made from a luxurious material... this silk gown has taken me back to the beginnings of china's love affair with fine clothing. i'm on my way to luoyang,

appropriately for the occasion. which promotes traditional costumes worn by han chinese — the country's largest ethnic group.
