that answer. like that was the exception that proves the role. i was struck by the perfunctory quality to all it. the prepared statement and the first statement look like he would rather have than almost anywhere else than doing the press conference. >> a lot of republicans will listen. he said he heard the american voters have heard the two thirds you did not vote. he certainly does not say i take some share of the flame. he certainly did not say i will change course in a dramatic way. he opened the door to a conversation that will happen later in the week. it was not that i get it and we need to do something different. >> i do not think there is a of single elite democrats who would listen to that or read news conference and say he advanced his cause.

there is nothing in there that is going down in history as a dramatic moment with two years left. >> in some levels the proof is in the pudding. we also read twitter. i would say the media consensus bipartisan was pretty skeptical the president got anything particular done in terms of advancing the agenda or goals to get himself in a better place. >> i have never ended a segment this way, only time will tell. >> a cliché for the win. the big wins in congress, john boehner sipping a tall glass of i told you so. here is what he told the press this afternoon in louisville, kentucky, about his plans for the immediate future in dealing with president obama. lexmark want to pass legislation . some of it you may not like, but we are going to function. the gridlock and dysfunction can be ended.

it can be ended by having a summit that actually works. >> mark is the majority leader ready to be the majority leader. >> you seek compromise not with the new majority leader you want but with the new majority leader you're going to get. i actually think, although mitch mcconnell is an inside player i actually think of marathon press conference -- he will never be a great communicator. he is doing one thing that i think gasquet people who are bullish on the prospect of compromise of hope, which is he keeps referring to the fact that he has been the dealmaker. he said when there have been breakers, i have been the one to strike them. usually with joe biden. people have the notion that he and joe biden are friends. they have done deals. i think the fact that he eats talking about being a dealmaker is a good sign he is ready to do some stuff in the short term and

immediate term. >> ted cruz has been out loudly saying we should not pass legislation and work president obama need to invest in president obama. macconnell came out and said we will not shut down the government, which was like a poke in the eye to ted cruz. he said we will not default on the debt. we will see what he can get done. especially in the house and the people that like ted cruz in the file. looks to me like he wants to put his feet to the fire. not necessarily compromise but pass legislation and say let's put ills on the president's desk . >> on the cover of time magazine i predict he will not discuss his favorite character anytime soon. i also predict he will not be the job he is always wanted. he is going to be the same mitch mcconnell he has always been which may well serve the country's purposes right now

because he knows the art of the deal. >> he is going to look towards 2016. even the republicans in congress know they have to have the white house. he will have that in mind going forward. let's he does not like messy. he likes regular order. this could be good for those that like to see compromise. last night hundreds of mourners. the koch brothers and just as many losers. john and i each picked one winner and loser who we do not think are getting enough attention so far from last nights results. who is your under discussed winner of the evening? >> the medical for goal -- metaphorical winner is snoop dog . great advocates of marijuana in general. marijuana legalization on the ballot in alaska. passed in oregon. the exit poll last night asking

people if they would like to see marijuana legalized in their state or not. i think not only do we have two more states doing the right and proper thing to legalize marijuana but we can see this within 10 or 12 years it will be legal within every state of the union. >> you could have picked the entire borough of brooklyn. my winner is john boehner. he is a partner and ally. he would like to be part of getting stuff done for the good of the country and because he wants to have the reputation. now a lot of the pressure is off of him. no longer in opposition to-against -- to-one. he has an ally against mitch mcconnell, and i think that is good for him. let's talk about the loser of the night. >> this is very specific and practical. scott brown. a night when in every contested

senate race they won whether they were challenges come incumbents. scott brown the only one to lose. >> if he had one, he would've been the kingmaker for the primary. >> now he cannot go back. cannot really run again in new hampshire. the only option for him is nova scotia. >> my loser is harry reid. not only not going to be majority leader, his party was wiped out in his home state including the lieutenant governor's race, which means the current governor is now freed up to run again if he does run for reelection. he also loses leverage over the white house because they will still talk to him but now the big deals will be done with the president macconnell. >> you think there will be a minority contest? >> i don't. you look at the morning paper's him he is a war with the white house. disastrous for everybody involved.

>> people in his office openly quoted him in a story. >> he will have to adjust to a new reality. i am not sure he is the world's best adjuster to new reality. >> today is the day of the start of the 2016 presidential campaign. >> it is the standard. >> already some winners and losers in the presidential contest upcoming, two. going to do winners and losers again. tell me who the winner is as a result of last night. >> chris christie. he did not when everyone. did not when connecticut or colorado. by winning in illinois and then holding florida, wisconsin and others, he gets judged not just with the politicians but the donors. they have gave big to the rnc raising tons of money. now same way that on christie

and a great return on investment. i think a lot of them will be money people. >> i have been as critical as christie for anyone. it is kind of amazing that he managed to put in a lot of time and miles. my winner is a guy who actually won the race, john kasich. we both agree he does not get nearly enough attention. one his race in ohio. a 31 point margin. >> the swing nearest. >> certainly one of the most important battleground states. there is no way in which if you put aside them mustard stains and add put aside those things john kasich has to be considered a serious presidential candidates on the merits. it's my loser or, hillary clinton. -->> my loser last night,

hillary clinton. they are so cautious. they overthink and over analyze everything. this gives them new complexity to deal with. i think whatever plan they had about how to proceed after the midterms in terms of potential announcement it is all thrown up in the air because no one expected the result they got. it means distancing themselves from president obama and dealing with the democratic agenda having to feel out and she is a candidate of compromise. a lot of complexity. while this has strength, they do not deal well. this operation does not deal well with complexity and things that threaten her. >> i agree with that. the loser of the other party is ted cruz. he is now in a marginalized position. not going to be mitch mcconnell's friend. if he does try to pass

legislation, that will not help. the big message of last night i think was that the tea party has not been pushed the severely undermined. a lot of republicans elected officials strategist coming out in using words like the wackos have been been back. >> i am sure they are not talking about ted cruz. a tea party was never going to win the nomination but less likely they will get the nomination tonight after last night. >> one of the few people we could find to be on today's program who is not resting from an all nighter. mike hence. he joins us next. ♪

the party that once a big thinking about running for president. mike pence, thank you for coming on the show. how do you interpret the sweep and scale of the republican victory last night? >> i think it was a great victory for the american pew poll. the american people i think spent two very distinct messages. they wanted to see a change of direct it at -- direction in washington dc away from more spending and mandates and taxes. the other piece of this i think is they also said we want to see more of what we're seeing in republican leadership at the state level. when you elect republican governors in place like massachusetts and illinois and arkansas and we are -- reelect in wisconsin and florida and elsewhere that is a real

affirmation of the kind of commonsense conservative leadership that they have been providing at the state level. we have enjoyed for much of the past 10 years. i think that is the two messages . number one, change direction in washington, but number two is the expanding field of republican governors all over the country, i think the american people are saying we want to see more of that leadership at the state level. >> those have been bookmarked the almanac of american politics know you used to be a congressman before you were governor. what do you think the prospects are that the personal relationship between the president and john boehner can get better sufficiently? that they trust each other enough to make those compromises and changes? >> you remember mark, i was bringing -- i was in the congress for 12 years and was in

republican leadership the year that we won majority back in 2010. i heard and what the president said today, it is a little frustrating to me. it sounds a little bit like what the president said after 2010. he said to the people who voted yesterday i hear you that then we are hearing word about executive action. i think it has never been a personal problem between the leadership and the republican party and this president. i think it has been the willingness of the president to provide leadership in both for the areas where there can be genuine common ground. i think there is areas where they can get good things done if the economy moving. we could get tax reform in the area is this taxes. we could do business taxes defense spending. a broad range of areas i think could get this economy moving and contribute to a stronger america but will take the president exercising leadership

to say i am willing to work the queue to find genuine common ground. my hope is when they get together we will see this leadership after this deafening message from the american people. different than we thought after the midterm in 2010. lex i made a joking allusion when i introduced you but i want to ask you about that. i know you think the next republican nominee needs to be a conservative. you also think it probably needs to be a governor. i am not going to ask you to roll your self out for the moment. that is chris christie from new jersey. is he as conservative as you? >> let me say back to your earlier point, people sometimes tell me the next nominee should be a governor. i certainly say i am sympathetic to that view. chris christie, scott walker

nick e hailey -- we have a great bench of proven leaders at the state level who i think have a lot to offer. i want to say straight up chris christie worked his heart out him and traveled across the country, raised the resources that managed to see us standing here today. 31 republican governors. he made a huge difference. >> chris christie as conservative as you are, yes or no? >> chris christie is a conservative. he is my friend and has been a strong leader in new jersey. bottom line, he provided great leadership and support for republican governors and the candidates and the success speaks for itself. >> moments ago you follow me on twitter. do you know what that means and did you press the follow button your self and how do you use
